Hi, compostchick!! I DID enjoy the tour of your planted shoes, boots, cake pans, coffee pots, etc!!! Loved each and every little treasure! Now, you've gotta tell me - since so many of the things you use don't come with drainage holes - how do you keep the plants going?? Esp interested in the bed pan coz I have an old enameled one and a stainless one. Would love to plant them next spring, but don't know how to keep from drowning the plants without drilling a BUNCH of holes....

BTW - you DO have homemade stuff....those plants didn't just wake up one morning and decide to mosey down to your yard and into place!! Besides, almost winter, so you'll have plenty of time to get your creative juices flowing - your place will be chock full in no time!

Love your imagination in using so many unusual things as planters, and your succulents are glorious as well as your flowers. What a gardner!!! I especially like the angel on the bench, the frogs, and BTW - I've seen those cow skulls partially mosaiced - not all over - just a portion, and I surely would like to have one.

Enjoyed the tour of your garden. You have a lot of sedums and I simply cannot get them to grow here. I especially liked the double pink poppy...sigh, I can't seem to find seeds for those. The white nastursium with the orange splashes is very striking! I haven't seen that one before.

Wow, gorgeous use of baskets and other vessels for planters. Never thought of using a basket to plant right into. I've used them to hold plants in pots, and hope you don't mind, but I'm running out to my porch right now and grabbing this one nice big basket I curb shopped and doing some planting in it. I absolutely love those Hen & Chicks plants, I didn't have any luck with them, probably not enough sun. Love the cowboy boots, ice skate is adorable and Nancy's idea's of a little tree in it is a fantastic idea, another idea to use this holiday season. I think that would be a wonderful gift for a friend or co-worker. On the "Junk Market Style" web site they had a pair of skates standing on a birch log (log was cut into to hold the blades) with faux greenery & berries in it (cute as heck). Thanks for sharing the pics. Just lovely!!

curbdriver...when i plant the shoes i out big rocks in the toe part use MG potting mix no need for drainage holes, leather shoe/boots will keep longer too, as for the bed pans my is an enameled one got it from an old lady at a ys she wanted 5 bucks tried to talk her down but it was brand new she said and i had to have it lol so i paid 5 bucks for it, no holes in it i set it at a slant so the extra water can run out, the cake pans and coffee pots are easy to add holes to..plus my pan sits in the shade with morning sun...

It gets very hot here in the summer..i keep all my sedums in the shade with morning sun give that a try...i do have seeds of the pink poppy if you want some...

craftylady...the basket are alot of fun too most will last 2 to 3 years depending on the weather, i just found it easyer to plant right in to them, i place them in the flower beds where they get mostly shade and water well , on the more holer baskets i line the botton with a plasic shopping bad just to help hold some water... i keep all my hen& chicks in the shade for the most part with morning sun..

Chick: THANKS for sharing. I'm appropriating your ideas and making use of unused baskets in my yet to be gardens. Was about to toss a pair of too used walking shoes. No more! They're being recycled into planters. Very clever woman!

Ooo! Ooo! idea! the bundt cake pan would make a cool living wreath! It would be pretty for christmas with some little balls stuck in!

Somehow I missed the budnt pan on my first 5 go throughs! Do you think it would be deep enough for any herbs? It would finally put mine to some use!

nancy...all i can say is give it a try with the herbs you never know, the cake pan is nice and deep...coffee pots might work too and tea pots lol..I dont grow herbs so i know nothing about them...

Ooohh, the coffee pot is a great idea. Have to keep an open eye for an old, on top of the stove one. So cool if I could find an enamal one.

i was thinking that old cooking pots would work too you know the kind with the little white spots, i have a few large ones that i planted with P. plants in and they over winter just fine (we get alot of snow) try that and try annul herbs in the cake pans...i bet tyme would be great in a bread pan....oh did ya want some of those pink poppy seeds?? i do have some i can send ya just email me your mailing addy, thats not a good snap of that poppy its pink with white looks like a rose....

Oh, compostchick, I love the shoes, boots, etc. and have done a few of my own. My planted my first set with impatiens and I brought them in for the winter. I recently picked up some clearance sedums and have done some more shoes with them. Recently, we were on vacation and went to the Arboretum in Lexinton, KY. Under a shrub, I found children's shoes planted with sedums. They looked like they had been there a long time and not taken in over the winter. I think Lexington is a USDA hardiness zone warmer (6) than me and I am wondering if I dare leave my planted shoes out over the winter. I've not paid very much for my sedums but I don't want to replant them again next spring. Sooooo...

Please tell me what you do with your shoes for the winter?? We don't get much snow cover here and get a lot of freezing and thawing. Thanx, Barbara.
