Honda vs Snapper,Cub Cadet,Toro
Comments (23)Honda may have good engines, but the plastic decks on their more expensive consumer line would be a deal breaker for me. I would much rather buy an aluminum deck Toro or Lawnboy or a steel deck Snapper. I use to work for Honda as an internal auditor and audited Honda Power Equipments plant in Swepsonville, North Carolina. The plant management told me Honda made the switch from aluminum to plastic to cut costs. I got a Honda Harmony mower for my brother at a company discount. Even though he only uses this mower sparingly as a trim mower and is careful with his equipment, the deck cracked. To top it off Honda delivered this mower without an air filter element and my brother did not catch their mistake until he was doing preventative maintenance, approximately one year after taking delivery. A neighbor bought a plastic deck Honda Harmony a few years ago and did not like its maneuverability and lack of mulching power and gave it to his mother. He bought a much cheaper Troy Built and likes it much better. The Lawnboy Insight Platinum, the Toro Super Recycler, or the Snapper HI-VAC would be better choices than the plastic deck Honda mowers and the Toro and Lawnboy are significantly less expensive. I would choose the Toro if you primarily mulch and the Lawnboy or Snapper if you primarily bag....See MoreMy Cub Cadet is a Lemon!
Comments (76)As fate would have it, I discovered this forum while looking for a part for my 2006 Cub Cadet LT1045 lawn tractor. I didn't read all of the responses and can only speak from personal experience, but my 1045 is far from a lemon. In 8 years, I've used it weekly to cut my half acre yard during grass growing season in the southeast. For those outside of this area, that would be about 8 months out of the year. I also used it to maintain another half acre lot for 2 seasons, cut my dad's half acre yard 2 seasons and my daughter's quarter acre lot for one season. I've done all of the servicing on it myself and haven't been very consistent with that, changing the oil and filter only 2 times since I bought it. The spark plugs have been replaced once and that was last year and the air filter was replaced for the first time when the plugs were replaced. I've replaced the blades pretty much every year and the deck belt about every two years. I believe I'm on my third battery. With that said, the only non maintenance repairs I have made is replacing one of the shaft/bearing assemblies on the cutting deck, replaced the mulch plug, and as of now I'm about to replace the stator. This tractor resides under my back deck, uncovered at all times when I'm not using it. Because of that, I need a new seat. It's the best investment in lawn care equipment I ever made....See MoreJohn Deere Or Cub Cadet
Comments (8)I went last Saturday to pick it up. It's the Cub Cadet LTX1050KW. I was going to get the Kohler, but the guy talked me out of it and said to get the Kawasaki... it was the same price. I had a 10% off coupon... total was $1,900 out the door. I sat on the 48" John Deere they had beside the Cub and didn't like it at all. Very uncomfortable and the John Deere overall was much smaller. It felt like it was the same size as my 10 year old Craftsman. Another thing was John Deere's headlights... they really need to rethink those. The cub sat up at least 3-4 inches higher... its like sitting in an SUV compared to a car. If I had another thousand or two to spend on a tractor, I probably would have went to a John Deere dealer and picked up one of those nice 4K models that I've seen pictures of. The cubs can't even compare to those. As of John Deere at the big box store... I think they should rethink the design of those or pull them all together. I can't think of anyone who seen these two mowers side by side would get the Deere instead of the Cub... especially since they are the same price....See MoreJohn Deere Myth
Comments (33)There seems to be a homeowner spending threshold of $1499 on lawn tractors and to be honest the average home owner would likely be served fine by anything in the $999 - $1499 range if they take care of their equipment.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /> JD made the decision to sell at this price point to increase sales. If truly a lesser quality machine, one would expect more repairs. Why the dealer would not welcome this extra repair revenue escapes me. My guess is that, under warranty, JD does not reimburse them at the same rate they charge regular folk for non-warranty repairs. In either event, they are shooting themselves in the foot by not playing fair with all customers. In fact, if you believe the ‘lesser quality’ $1499 model indeed tarnishes the JD reputation, you’d think the dealers would be going out of their way to treat you right to make up for JD’s ‘foolish mistake’ to sell that model to begin with. Further, the 'cursory' 20 minute inspection vs an hour at the dealer sounds fishy to me to begin with but putting you at the back of the line just further hurts the JD name by creating droves of disgruntled customers who no doubt will be coming on with their ‘lesser quality units’ that were only ‘cursory’ inspected now having to wait weeks for a repair! I really personally think the $1499 model is probably fine for your average homeowner. I t may not last 25 years but so what…your not paying $3000 for it. I think it offends the buyers of the expensive machines more than anyone else. I recently bought a Cub for $1699 after looking at a JD, an Ariens and a Husky. My preference is always to support my local dealer when possible and many times the pricing is the same anyway. The JD dealer pointed out he did not sell the $1499 HD model…’plastic tranny and crappy seat’ he said. I respected him for telling me that. Sadly he really did not want to spend more than 2 to 3 minutes with me to explain why I needed to spend $300 more for his base model…sort of had the attitude…’Bye…gotta go sell some big farm equipment’. I quickly moved on. The Husky dealer was not thrilled that Lowes sold his brand either BUT…he bad mouthed the Husky in general anyway and tried to move me to some $3500 thing I could not afford. Again, I respected that but I moved on. I ended up buying my cub at a dealer. I probably would have been just as well served by the JD or the Husky…...See Moreweed_cutter
