victorian ideas needed-moose and bear too

I'm doing my new bathroom in victorian style, colors maroon and lace. I need ideas please!

Our living room will be moose, deer and bear in there, need ideas for that too.

halley - You might try using the search box and enter a more specific word to get GJ ideas. Like "moose" and see what comes up. Are you looking for ideas for GJ accessories? Like maybe log cabin birdhouses? Also trash to treasure might have some ideas. Have fun remodeling! Jeanne S.

I did a quick search on the GJ site, but didn't have a lot of luck. I'm thinking you might have better luck just doing a google search for Victorian decorating. Personally, I love the style! Even though wallpaper isn't on the top of the designers lists these days, I love that too and still have it in my house. It's something that is very Victorian! If I find any other sites, I'll send them along. You might also try looking under the yard conservatories on this site--they have some ideas there too!

Actually...the more I look at it...the walk wants to be as wide as the brick drainage runnels. I think Ink might be right about the gravel bit...but you DON'T want a gravel walk. They are a PITA unless one has a gardening staff. I did a little research, many houses of this era had brick walks in a herringbone pattern. Not certain if you want to/can invest in that. Wish I were better at mock ups. I'd do a picture for you. Are you wedded to the existing driveway? Perhaps what you REALLY need to do is step back and rethink the whole front yard. You've done such a lovely job with the house...it would be worth the time and trouble to get it right. It's getting late to be planting shrubs and such in zone 8...I'm getting anxious about people planting them here in zone 7b...fall is really the better time to plant here in the south. (I'm up in North Cackalacky.) If you could sketch a rough overview of your plat...where the house sits etc...we MIGHT be able to help you come up with something. Or at least figure out dimensions and such. In the meantime...I'd finish pulling back the sod to the driveway area. I'd plant annuals in the earth you've exposed and mulch it. Then it will look intentional, and you'll be happier. ARE deer an issue? It will make a difference as to what annuals you plant. I work in a garden center. I'm no designer...but I DO know how to help people make things "pretty" until they get their bones in place. If you came in "my" gc the first thing I'd suggest is hiring a landscape designer or architect...and then I'd help you figure out a way to live with it until you could get your plan in place. melanie

Bears happen. Here in Montana black bears do wander into our town (well, small city) and cause a lot of problems in orchards and dumpsters. Fish and Game or Wildlife and Parks will humanely deal with them pretty quickly. Usually they dart them and relocate them, sometimes trap. They almost never find it necessary to kill them. I've taken to carrying pepper spray when I'm in the mountains now (as much for wolves and cougar as for bear) and you might consider it. This is a pint aerosol that goes off with a very loud bang and sends a cloud of capsaicin. It has been known to turn charging grizzlies, which is a good trick. One experience with it will convince Black Bear to seek friendlier neighborhoods. Expect to pay forty or fifty bucks for a can. Local bear expert Jamie Jonkel says it will, in fact, deter 9 of 10 grizzlies .... There's no warranty for the tenth bear. You'd have to lay in wait for your bruin, so it may not be practical. I can imagine trying to convince my wife that I needed to sit up and stare at my trees until daybreak! Good luck. We all sympathise. :-)M

Is the tree you are considering pot-grown or B&B or what? A 10' tall Southern Magnolia should have a pretty big rootball. How large is the rootball on the one you are considering? Do you have the ability to handle a rootball that large? As j0nd03 said, now is not the best time to plant a tree, but the odds of it surviving depends on many things including its current condition and how it's treated during and after planting. Planting it now is not the killer, but what it's gone through so far and what you have to do to it (especially root system preparation) when planting it can be. If your tree is pot-grown, be aware that it may require extensive root pruning to straighten out the pot-bound root system (a death sentence this time of year). If it were me, I'd wait until fall to plant it. That should be the optimal time in your area, and it will make the work much easier (because it will be cooler). I'd also probably consider starting with a little smaller tree, which could establish more quickly and grow faster, if I was going to be doing the planting by myself. There was a speciality magazine that was full of moose & bear type stuff. It's more Lodge or resort type look than Victorian but some stuff was awfully cute & they had wall borders. Maybe google "moose wall borders" Wish I could remember the name of the catalog. They had rugs, flannel sheets, throws etc Stuff for the bathroom. It's neat catalog! Try "wilderness accessories" maybe that would bring it up! I'm little confused, I thought Victorian was lacey & old fashioned dolls, lace hankies & delicate teacups, don't think of moose & bears in that mix?????Jan PS Bull in a china shop???LOL

You can google "victorian bedrooms" or "vintage bedrooms". Some things may also be found under 'shabby chic'

I think of flowers, hankies and lace and crochet when I think victorian. Of course older wood furniture. Maybe tea or coffee dyed materials. You should be able to find even tea dyed plaids or flannels to make it more masculine.

Yes lodge searches will reveal moose, stick furniture and such for the other room.

I looked up Victoria Magazine and they have little to offer via the Web. I have a few back issues and they had some neat Victorian decor ideas. Still in print so maybe can get one at a news stand.
A family friend lives on a street in town with all Victorian houses and she has her front rooms decorated in Victorian, silk wreaths with tea cups and saucers glued on, roses, pearls and ribbon. Velvet throw pillows, heavy gold tassles on the drapery, heavy gilded framed artwork etc...
For a bathroom I think to lighten it up with a pink and gold would be cheerful with lace, pearls and roses. You could use wide upholstry trim for the "crown" molding on the walls.

Your moose, bear living room reminded me I wanted to make a coffee table I saw. Get an old childs sled, sand it down stain it, seal and attach coffee table legs for a lodge type coffee table.
I love plaids and paisley together. Country Curtains have nice curtains on their website and will send you sample swatches.
An idea for throw pillows is go to a SalVal or other second hand clothes store and find old sweaters, cut under the arms to make a tube sew one end, stuff a pre made pillow form in and hand stitch the top to make your own designer pillows. I found the 16x16 and the 18x18 pillow forms are a nice size. Hint: get a small sized sweater, they stretch.

I am looking this week and next for those gaudy Xmas sweaters with the beads and bling to make xmas pillows from those.

I think I know a style that can merge the two looks. It is the European "English Fox Hunt" look. But your Victorian look would not be the "American Victorian style". Your bathroom would have a dark wood sink cabinet. Ralph Lauren does a line of wallcoverings/fabrics that you might look at. But you really do not want to do the "American Cabin Look" and the "Lacy Victorian look" on the same floor of your house. Your house needs to flow with a connected, all-together, theme look. I agree with Karen that the folks over at Home Decor Forum could explain it better.

GW wouldn't let me do another reply last night,
forgot to mention the inexpesive way for lace/beaded fabric.
Second hand,news paper ads or SalVal stores for old wedding gowns is a good choice.
They sell them for around 20.00 here and lots of fabric in a wedding gown.

I too, thought of fabric for the walls upposed to paint or wallpaper. I have a few fabric covered walls in the house now but I wasn't sure about using fabric for the walls in a bathroom and the humidity. That is, assuming it has a shower or bath.

Go to "Black Forest Decor" for lot of moose & bear wallpaper borders. Don't think that is company but they have the neat borders. Kirk did you get that!!! You will like the bears!!! Jan

1 more good site "Woodland Things" click on bear decor! I still don't see this mixing with Victorian, this is what i call rustic, log cabin type stuff but they have great bear & moose stuff!!Jan

I agree with susiewantsroses that a Victorian style dining room and a North Lodge style living room would be a HGTV don't. lol! I agree the English country look would probably be a more cohesive style. You could still incorporate some Victorian style (dark woods, oriental rugs, even flowery wallpaper) and North Lodge (moose and bear pictures/statues) with the English country look but the furnishings would be a bit more traditional than the North Lodge look and not as ornate as the Victorian. English country can be both formal and informal. Do a search on English country to get some ideas.
