My shelf project... and a little extra!

Here is the picture of the shelf I built from scrap lumber. I saw a similar one on a patio privacy fence when I was on a garden tour & thought it was a great idea. I already had the privaacy fence beside my patio, so it wasn't a big deal to put this up. Now for the little extra. I posted a before & after picture of a room divider that I use on my patio to cover up the business end of my home.When I got the divider it was covered with burlap. Very plain. Didn't do much for me except cover up my electric meter. Then I stenciled some ferns on it & I think it looks much better. The second photo doesn't really do it justice. The sun was shining on it too brightly so the stencils don't show up as vividly as they realy look. Now for the really cool part... I was looking for a room divider of some sort & low & behold, there it was... in front of my neighbors house on the garbage pile. I love when that happens!!The only thing it cost me was the price of the stencil!

Okay, that was the before. I'm still trying to get the hang of posting pictures on here. Sorry! Now after the stenciling project.

You did a very pretty job on the screen. Love the corbels holding up that massive shelf. It reminds me of a fireplace mantel. And your fall flowers look gorgeous!

I love this thread, too!! Wow! I've had building materials stacked around my house, including all my windows for years. A while back I realized that the only way to get rid of these things as to work to have them installed. Since 2008, everything I do, every penny I make goes into getting something installed. The windows were first and the space it made was AMAZING! Plus, then, without heat, it was still a million degrees warmer in here than it was with just Tyvek paper covering the windows!! My current whammy was taking a cabinet apart and retrofitting the drawers into another, reach-in base cabinet. I got rid of the 1st cabinet (making space) and was able to sort that bank of 3 cabs (reach-in, drawers now, and reach-in) so I could actually put my towels and linens in them, in the MBR and bath. Those are now out of boxes stacked against the wall. I have to cut down some 36" drawers (reuse center) and put the casters on the bottom for underbed storage. This will get make space for the few quilting projects I just cannot part with, but am not working on. That is my weekend goal. Someone, on another board, called these projects "broken teeth". You take care of this "tooth" and 5 other things get done, plus everything looks so good. AND it was so darned easy, you wonder why you didn't do it sooner. :)

For me, the answer is mostly "no". When we looked for houses, I knew that w/ our budget, we would never be able to get the kind of house/kitchen that had what we wanted. So whenever we'd look at a house, it was more of "how easy was it to fix/replace what was currently there". Examples: - the house had old carpet; my kids have asthma: we knew we'd have to take out the carpet (and put in hardwood floor). So I'm glad that the previous owners (PO) did NOT spend good money replacing them. - BUT they did update the windows - LOVE the fact that they did that. - I am SO SO happy that the PO did NOT update the kitchen, because w/ me being TKO, the PO would not have done it right (my way). But the kitchen has good bones (custom high quality cabinets - which I did not notice until AFTER we'd purchase the house and move in). - 2 of the house has old wallpaper. I don't like it, and I'm glad the PO didn't paint OVER the wallpaper. So now it's just a matter of us removing the wallpaper and painting the rooms the color that WE CHOOSE.

We ran into something like this and the feedback was that the uppers and base cabinets do not have to line up. There are a lot of pics on this. So you can do wide drawers in base but smaller uppers so the doors are are not too wide. Lalitha

Okay, good! Hall of Fame I can definitely take! LOL And oh, Katy, I'm two years behind on my son's scrapbook, I've got some embroidery projects that have been on the shelf for a decade, a drip system in my veggie garden that needs to be replaced and 2/3 of a yard that still needs landscaped. I'm also in a choral group--but I practice my songs out in my workshop when I'm doing mosaic. So that's an ingenious way of completing two hobbies at once. LOL Like you said, Slow, I can't imagine life without hobbies. Lots of TV, you're right. I am out of the loop on the programs all my friends and coworkers watch, but I'm okay with that! This is much more fun.

What a wonderful area. You found it in the trash pile... lucky you. And I love the shelf as well. I could sit there all afternoon!! Very inviting.

Wow!! Looks really great! There are so many things I'd like to bring home with me--let's see....your wonderful shelf, the wood and wire piece hanging on the fence, the old water pump, the side table, the candle holder on the side table.....where did you say you lived??? Just kidding.....I love all of your great stuff!!

Thanks everyone for the nice comments. The little table was again from my favorite junk shop. She is very creative & I get a lot of ideas from her. The top is an old chippy door. The 2 chairs I got for $5 for the pair from a yard sale. A couple of cans of spray paint later, they look like new!

That is wonderful Tami!! I'm about to take on a similar project. Hubby is getting our back deck built on a new house and I'm wanting to do a little fence work for our dear pups. I'm thinking a little paver patio like you have, a space for two to sit and quietly reflect on the day. Nice landscaping around in pots and the fence giving additional privacy. Thanks for the wonderful picture and ideas!! I definitely need to find a good junk store around here! :-)

tami - I thought I posted on this earlier but I don't see it...you have a beautiful, cozy patio area! Love your shelf, your divider stenciled & everything! I used a similar stencil on some butterfly houses my DH made. Enjoy your peaceful spot...with water features, too! And the mums are gorgeous! Jeanne S.

hi ,great look on the screen and shelf , good ideas . I noted in background of your first pic a garden statue of what appeared to be a German Shepherd . May I ask if it is concrete and where you purchased it from ?
I collect them & have several in my garden but not that one .
