Throttle-Free Briggs problem

I picked up a cheap lawn mower at a garage sale. Its a Dynamark and has a 3.75hp B&S throttle-free design motor on it. My problem is that I can't quite figure out how to put this small metal rod on the carb to keep it running(it was off when I got it).

Without the rod the motor starts easily and runs but the RPM's go up and down with the governor swinging back and forth. I can keep it running at operating RPM's if I hold the governor myself. One end of this metal rod (see pics) seems like it may be broken by the looks of it, but I don't know. I can't seem to find anything on the orientation of the throttle-free design.

Does anyone know where to put the metal rod or have a diagram/pic of it? I have it where I think it SHOULD go(in my mind), but the thing doesn't start with it there.

It looks like something that somebody added. Remove it and adjust the speed with the spring tensions.

This engine will turn and sounds like it has a lot of compression and won't turn fast at first. When it does turn fast and attempts to start it back fires through the carborator. If I continue to try and start it the cotta key will break on the flywheel. The valves are set properly or so I think. I cannot find the engine information anywhere in any Briggs & Stratton book. On the engine cover there is a Family number listed 5BSXS.5012VP and the number 267016. I cant find any of these numbers in the book.

Well, it is entirely possible that it is too rich. If you were to slow the flow to the carb via the valve or clamp- does it smooth out? Know that the leading cause of the float valve not sealing is debris in the fuel or a deteriorating fuel line. With that being said, it is good repair procedure to clean the fuel system complete, install a new float valve, fuel filter, new lines if they are questionable plus install an inline fuel valve (and use it) for an insurance policy as these are touchy carbs. Verify that there is no fuel inside the float, the float pin isn't yucked up and allowing the float to bind, and that what fuel goes into the tank is fresh and clean.

This is always easier when you are there!Hopefully this is right... There is a shorter link that goes from the carb to a pivoting bell crank, down from there goes the longer link which goes down to the governor arm to which the spring is hooked from there to the back of the control the cable actuates.

In the picture, where the spring attaches to the tab on the right side, looking down, bend the tab outward, if necessary, to increase high speed operation. Remove the wire rod.

What baymee said. Former user ran the mower into a bush and bent the tab backward reducing spring tension. He didn't have a clue and tried to add the hard link you pictured. Toss that extra link and bend the tab back forward. If you don't have a tach to set it to 3200 rpm be careful not to over rev it.

I agree with the advise from Baymee and NW. Find the model, type and code - which is probably on the top engine cover - and use the link provide to look at the parts breakdown. http://www.commercialpower.com/display/router.asp?DocID=22742

If the engine continues to run up and down (surge), the carburetor may be running too lean. In this event, the carburetor would probably need to be disassembled for cleaning.

I seemed to have got it going good. A buddy has a spark based tach and we are going to adjust it next week.
