New Toro won't start

SR4 Personal Pace. No manual choke.

Started it and went 20' to see if the height was okay.

Tried it again 29 minutes later and it won't start.

Can't take it back until mid-week.

Cleaned the plug and tried it without the air cleaner.

Still no go.

Any ideas? Grass is kinda long.

Was it Brand new? Never run before? Just buy it and brought it home? In your haste to use it, did you just tear off all of the tags, pour gas in the tank, start it up, and went to mow? (And, didn't put oil in the engine?) HMMM?? Those mowers are usually shipped without oil in the engines, and if you didn't read the tags and instructions, it might be one of them! TSK, TSK, TSK!
The reason i say this is: I was given a brand new self-propelled Southland mower, by a friend who owns a store that sells everything. He said he sold it, and the buyer brought it back, saying the oil looked "Watery", and it had only run a short time, and then stopped. Of course, all of the tags were torn off by the buyer. And, in that bunch of tags were the instructions to put oil in the engine before starting it! And, my friend said under the law, he couldn't sell it again, not knowing what the trouble was. So, i got it! I took it home, put in the right amount of engine oil, started it up and it ran fine! I asked my store friend if he wanted it back, but he said no.
So, i sold it to a man, who used it for nigh on to 10 years or so, and he gave it back to me for free, since i had always serviced it at a fair price!

Was the fuel you put in the tank old?
Gas cans can condense moisture while sitting over the WInter.

Gas is relatively new. I think the exhaust valve is a good idea. That is what it acts like because the small backfires are coming from the exhaust versus the intake (can see a puff of smoke). Rdaystrom - can you tap on it through the plug hole?

What you are describing is the Governor Speed Control Linkage this controls or governs engine speed under load condition . I was going to mention that previously but though better off it since not replacing the spring or stretching it will severely reduce the performance and idle of your mower . It sounds like you have it in the proper orientation , however you may have stretch it if you were not careful , easy to do . Since it is doing what you need , just head to your local dealer or repair shop and pick up another spring along with anything else you may still require .The Heli coil insert if your mower is worth the additional time and expense in your mind , will ensure you don't do any long term damage from a lean burn condition . The carbs vibrate a lot and eventually will begin to suck air , begin to backfire ..etc !

Try priming it again and when you push the bulb in hold it in for a second or two each time. You may have to pull quite a few times after running it dry. If all else fails that is what a warranty is for.

Remove the cover to gain access to the engine and give the carb a snort of gas mix, NOT ether. If it fires and quits, the fuel system needs to be stripped and thoroughly cleaned. This is a common problem with snow throwers that see infrequent use.

New April 11.
Purchased locally, and they put the oil in it.
I check it each time I use it, 'cause there aint much in there.
I'll try new gas tomorrow - if I can figure out how to drain it without tipping it the "wrong" way.
Thanks for the ideas. Hope I don't ask you to keep them coming tomorrow.
