My Blue Garden(ing) Angel

So DW said make an angel. And I said okay.

Even the most astute observer will not know all the parts.

So without further fanfare.

The halo is a bicycle gear (what else)

The head is a WW1 deactivated hand grenade (didn't see that coming did ya?)

The wings were cut from a computer case. (I hate to fabricate parts but. . . )

The main shaft is an automobile tie rod part.

Then the sub-base is one of those glass, star-shaped candle holders.

The base, base is just a treated old piece of pine.

no scale... in adrian MI ... the annual i call the bachelor buttons... or corn flowers .. and they are just over an inch wide .. wiki says: Centaurea cyanus the perennial .. lol.. i call a perennial bachelor button ... but it is at least 2 inches wide ... i am sure the latin will come to me in a day or two ... if you buy the blue seed... which i did a decade ago [when i moved to this house] ... it reseeds tamely.. and the finches are entertaining.. watching them trying to land on them ... but over time.. the seed will denigrate.. so that though most are still blue.. you will have some white and purple ones ... an annual i have not been without.. for 35 years .. in the garden ... ken ps: i googled: perennial bachelor button.. i see it was consistent with their suggestion.. but i must have had it under some old name .. Ken, I assume you mean size of your palm. Else, what are giving yours - Vitameatavegamin (I Love Lucy reference). Craigbear - Zilis lists leaves approx 5"x4" for Blue Cadet with clump 15" high x 38" wide; and for Blue Angel- leaves approx 16"x12" and clump 32" high x 70" wide. For me, Blue Cadet is fast growing - in 2 years you should have a nice clump. More blue-green than blue. Pic below is from '08 -- was probably sprouting 4 divisions/eyes in spring '06. My Blue Angel is planted in mostly shade under an oak canopy and is slow to get big (like many of the big blues it seems). Pic below is from June 09 - clump I started with was good size and planted in 06. Distance between back set of trees is probably 8-9'. I did what Ken suggests - found a spot where I wouldn't need to move it. Paul

you asked me.. pappy gave you the answer ... the potato like crown needs to be at soil level ... the little pips within one inch of the top of the soil ... if planted too deep ... as little as 2 inches ... the plant will waste too much energy trying to get above the soil.. many will fail if too deep... crown .. pip.. eye.. petiole... cordate ... lanceolate.. all terms of art ... may as well start learning them .. you have bought your first hosta.. addiction is not far behind ... so you may as well start learning the terms.. lol ... find the hosta library ... there used to be drawings and stuff to start you on your way toward knowledge ... BTW .. while you are there research HVX virus.. especially the pix of such .... there are some mass marketers that sell virused plants.. especially if the packaging refers to bulbs.. i would perhaps not trust them ... if your plants show any sign of such .... destroy them.. NO MATTER HOW COOL THEM LOOK .... if you do catch the hosta fever.. we can recommend many great mail order sellers ... good luck .. come back often ... ken PS: blue angel can get up to 4 feet high.. and 6 feet across ... but it will take 5 to 7 years .... plant it where you can leave it for that long ...

Hi Melissa, Blue Mammoth tends to be frosty blue, but not so much on Blue Angel. Blue Angel has a very distinct elongated/spear shape to it, with a pointed tip, so is easy to identify if you can post a picture. Chris

Laura, it's a real struggle finding scrap these days when all the shops are recycling.
So I'm scavenging my collection of "good" stuff for parts (like the old hand grenade I purchased years ago for a buck).IÂve gotten some stuff from neighbors and from freecycle,

Robert again you did it again, What can I say BUT ITS DA BOMB Robert you are so very talented and everything you create always makes me think God has given you amazing talents, but the best part is that you have taken your talent created and then by posting it we can enjoy and admire, and sit here in admirations while we view an original work right in our own homne.

I think what I love about this blue angel is the contradiction of what found materials you used to make her..the serenity of the star glass sub-base vs the brutality of a hand grenade for her head. The metal bicycle halo & auto tie rod body vs the fabricated wings from a computer casing. Wow! This pc needs to be in an art gallery! TFS your talent, Robert. Jeanne S.
