What can I do with old tires on rims?

I was given a couple of old tires on rims to do with whatever I can come up with....problem is I can't come up with any ideas. I figured if anyone could help me out, it would be the people here at GJ. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

All I've seen is veggies or flowers growing in just the rubber part. Might hold dirt in place on an incline, suppose you could put large pot of wave petunias on them as a stand or something else that goes over sides of pots. Might look nice & add height & more of a statement to a not so stately plant!!Jan

smicker ... I've had 2 tire planters for many, many yrs...one thing is they don't BLOW AWAY & another is that they NEVER WEAR OUT! They're kind of hard to make (turning the rubber)...so you'll need help...grab those kids! Maybe this site will give you some ideas! Jeanne S.
p.s. I have one planted with hen & chicks & the other with mint (to keep it from spreading too much)...has worked great!

I have seated tires that way many times. It works great and isn't dangerous beyond the obvious fire hazard. The most important part is to get the air/fuel mixture right. Most of the youtube guys spray 10 times too much fuel. It only takes a squirt. If it just burns then blow some air around in the tire and try again with a smaller squirt. You must be ready with the air hose to inflate the tire quickly because the hot air cools rapidly after it pops the tire on and then the tire will sometimes unseat again as the cooling air shrinks. I myself would not do large tires like a tractor or a truck. I just do riding mower and atv tires etc. The reason I consider it to be safe on these tires is that there isn't much air in the tire to cause a big explosion. It's just a nice pop. Now if someone added pure oxygen to the mix ....look out and run for cover. That would most likely explode.

I would say that was pretty big jump in size, assuming the middle figure (6.5 to 8.5) is the width. You might have some issues with the rounding of the tire tread due to the narrow wheel, instead of it being relatively flat. That said, I did the same thing you are asking about by going from a stock size of 18x8.50x8 to only 1-in. wider at 18x9.50x8. The difference in width is quite noticeable, and with a 38-in. wide deck it has reduced my deck overhang from the edge of the tires and that in turn limits my ability to trim closer to flower beds and raised concrete edging. The tire seeems to be fairly flat on the wheel but I think a wider tire you're suggesting might have problems. This year for the first time I put a ripped hunk of cotton blue jean material into a compost pile. Mostly as a curiousity, to see how long it takes to rot. Sometimes you just can't even use stuff as rags, it is so worn out. Don't know how nutritious it is, but that was one of the first really startling things I learned on gardenweb, that you can compost cotton clothing! Just something most people wouldn't think of on their own. Read a great paraphrased line in a book today, "Some are born weird, some achieve it, others have weirdness thrust upon them." Describes us here pretty well, doesn't it? (Quote from Dick Francis.) Speaking of weird: Blutranes, I wish you wouldn't, every year or so, tell me that I am compromising the health of my family by not buying organic soil amendments and hence having faulty nutrition. Then when I ask about it, you say, oh, you are organic, I don't want to argue with you. If you are going to make such BIZARRE claims about the health of my family related to eating our organic produce, then I expect some facts in return. I am a smart person, and I used to teach chemistry, physics, math, and computer science. I have both a B.S. and an M.S. from a college of engineering, so you are free to use big words in your explanation. I assure you that I will understand any actual facts and data. Marcia

Tinker - I really respect your willingness to keep as much of the home as you could. It is absolutely beautiful and exactly the style I would choose as well. We're just finishing picking fixtures for our new addition and fell in love with that style of schoolhouse fixture you put in the kitchen. I love your kitchen! That would be a dream space for me. And the laundry - oh, the laundry! In theory, I agree with totsuka. I think that the bar has been raised in this country, and many people are putting upgrades in their kitchens and baths that aren't necessary. It would be silly to put granite countertops in our modest bungalow, but I think some home buyers expect it. HGTV or whatever has made us think that somehow cooking on certain surfaces is mandatory. I was struck when I lived in England how dingy that carpet often was and how home dwellers didn't seem to notice. I appreciate that sense that if it works it's okay even if it isn't current. Maybe I misread the aesthetic there, but I had the sense they had lower expectations, at least in my circles. Not everything had to be perfect, and people were used to living in older spaces. But having said that, what you did is extraordinary. And if you have the money, I think home improvement is one of the most satisfactory ways to spend your money, especially if you are committed to restoring rather than renovating.

There is a marvelous book by a guy from Utah called Tire Crafting. It has many things to make from tires on rims. His website is tirecrafting.com. It is a fascinating book.

I like Rush Felder's "rubber tree." You can see his yard at http://www.felderrushing.net/frontyard.htm. But I love these tire planters at the site below.

WOW .... luna .... those are really pretty! Great way to recycle .... so attractive and durable. Love that. I'd probably pay the $49 too, if I didn't have 2 grandsons to spend the money on instead lol. Need to show the pic to hubby and see if he might try his version ....

Micki, I had an old tire rim planted with hens and chicks, and the bleepin' squirrels dug them up. I had them down at the back part of the yard and didn't keep a close eye on them. Anyways, it looked really good when it was thriving, might plant again someday and bring it up closer to the house.

There was a time when many of the houses in this area had tire planters out in their yards. Don't see them much anymore.

I like the idea of using them to contain the aggressive plants like mint, maybe bamboo could work like that too, but one would still probably have to dig down and put a barrier in to contain the roots. I've had that stuff almost take over my garden!

*raises hand* ooo ooo oo pick me,pick me. LOL Went to the dump and found this thing didn't know what it was but I took it home and made bird feeder hangers from it. The base is a tire rim then there is a pole going up the middle and 2 more poles crossed at the top.then hooks at each end of the crossed poles. All is welded together. I hook my feeders to each hook. It was yucky lookin when I got it but because of the sun being so hot here I painted it white. I can tell ya the birds love it.

I have seen several painted like ladybugs, and keep saying that I want to do that! I can't find a post that still works to show you some of those I have seen. Too long ago I guess.

Tenderlee ... that site also makes "pony" swings out of old tires. They are so much neater than the tire hanging by a rope! It's another thought for what to make with old tires. They look like so much fun, if I had a big enough tree I'd be tempted to buy one!

Aren't those birds the prettiest? If someone was handy at painting, I wouldn't think they'd be that hard to make ... well maybe strength wise. lol I heard it isn't so easy turning the tires inside out.

Some great ideas here. Have seen the birds before and want a couple so bad. Trying to justify. I like the planter suggestions. Painted they would look good in a garden. I was wondering about painting the rims one color and the tires another and using them to set pots on. Could use a block to create different heights in the garden.
