What 2001-2002 21' Deeres came with Kawasakis?

I am trying to figure out what 21" John Deere mowers came with Kawasaki engines for model years 2001 and 2002. Was this was after the 14Sb ended production, meaning we're talking about the JX75 and JX85? My observation is the the JS63 and other "J" models (if any) only came with Briggs motors. Am I correct? Also, I am assuming this was the FC150V 5hp motor, since I believe the FJ180V wasn't out yet. Is that correct? So if one were looking at 2001-2002 Deere with a Kawasaki, what models could it possibly be? Thanks.

you are correct sir! only jx 75 and the worlds best lawn mower the jx85 came with kawi fc150 . the inferiour 180 came later .

I agree with you Bradley0241 as reel mowers are probably healthy and do make a yard look nice as compared to most rotary designs. Not the case with all though, and it depends on the blade, the deck design and whether one bags or not. However Bradley that machine you referenced is a commercial model and very expensive compared to the models here being compared. Not apples to apples. A better comparison would be to look at a Mclane 17-4.75 GT series powered rotary mower. However keep in mind that Reel mowers slice the tips of the grass blades off much like a barber does to ones hair but it also means that to obtain the best results out of one, you must cut your grass more frequently and if you have better things to do then this will not be for you. Anyway I too looked and considered the JD JS45 and the Craftsman Prosumer Yellow mowers. After careful consideration with reviews and with my type of lawn, I am just going to keep what I have. Actually I am going to fix up my old JD 12SB and just put a new engine on it. Those suckers run forever and require little maintenance with a Kawasaki engine. The new JD's are just not what they used to be. Craftsman in my mind represents a better value and their equipment seems to hold up better on the residential level than John Deere. Thanks though alerting me to the rebranding of the Cub Cadet. This is nothing new either as this sort of thing has been going on for decades and even John Deere has been complicit in this practice.

You will lose the benefit of having the engine operate at a consistent temperature. Engine temperature without a thermostat will vary depending on ambient air temperature and the loading conditions of the engine. Engine warm up after a cold start will be delayed somewhat. I would expect any "problems" from not having a thermostat would occur during cold weather operation more than during summer time operation. Thermostatic control of coolant flow has several myths that arise in popular culture. One myth being that a "cooler rated" thermostat will result in the engine automatically assuming the new lower OPENING TEMPERATURE as its OPERATING TEMPERATURE. The rating of the T-stat only governs the temp where the T-stat begins to open allowing coolant circulation through the radiator. And under ideal conditions, that rating may in fact be the temperature the engine will operate at. But higher ambient air temps, dirty radiator cooling fins obstructing air flow, anything blocking air flow through the radiator, a collapsed coolant hose, etc can and will result in the engine temperature rising higher than the opening temp rating of the thermostat. Operating without a thermostat during cold weather will cause a number of problems, the most insidious being degradation of the engine lube oil due to moisture in blow-by gases condensing into the oil and never being driven out again by the beneficial "normal operating temperature" being attained due to "over cooling" the engine.

I take it the warranty out by years? IMO that's why they put time limits cause they know most people won't put to many hours or do any maintenance on or in two years. When it won't start that's when you need to troubleshoot it. IMO first I would do would pull the plugs see if you getting fire at the plugs (pretty blue spark, no orangish and of course no spark) It you got spark spray carb. cleaner down the spark plug holes and see if it will start up on the carb. cleaner. If it fires of the carb. cleaner and dies you still have carb. issue or compression lost. I afraid you going to have to take the heads off and look in the comb chamber at the cylinder walls, valves and head gaskets. seems like your problem occurs after the engine heats up and of course that would be the ideal time to take compression when it quits also. my guess would be cracked head, or something causing it to loose compression, that;s why you need to take the compression when it dead, if you got 130 PSI or more then IMO the bottom end, valves are good but that IMO don't over rule the head gasket or cracked head. I would also take the cooling fin covers off and see if I see any sign of leakages before I go tearing it apart. there alot of engines that will fit Based on the shaft size and length Course it easier to get the same type engine (HP number not that important but hookups are. if they are the same then HP don't matter as long as it close to what you've got. Most problems with going with different brand are the muffler and starter setup and throttle cables arrangement and brackets and of course if it will fit under your hood cowl. For the price of honda you can get you another used mower. and fixing the old one if you can do it yourself would be the best choice money wise IMO.

With some great help from marineguy's buyer's guide on Deere GTs, I purchased a used 2001 GT225 early this summer. It was in excellent condition, very low hours by comparison to other GTs I looked with hour meters and I got it for $1700. I was primarily looking at GT225s and 235s, but I also kept my eye open for the GT242,262,275 series as well. I didn't come across that many, but those that I did were either beat or the good condition ones were overpriced in my opinion. I could get a newer GT225/235 for the same price or somewhat more. In fact, at $1700, I ended up with my GT225 at lower price than some GT275s I saw. So I would agree with marineguy, I would look for a GT225 or 235. Personally, I steered clear of the GT245s with the 20HP Kawasaki. They had some type of over rich problem which I confirmed with a call to JD corporate (very helpful actually with regard to my purchase). If the 20HP Kawas didn't have that issue, I would probably have bought a mint 2004 GT245 with 80 hours. Seem to run well when I test drove it, but every time I started it, it would put out a nice big shot of black smoke and inside of the right front wheel was as black as the tire. I think I would have paid about $2700-2800. I'm in the northeast and we definitely seem to pay more, but I think $2700-2800 for a mint 80 hour GT245 would have been a nice deal. Although I'm very satisfied with the GT225 with the single cyl 15HP Kohler, the newer GT235s with the 18HP Kawa would have been my first choice if I could have got one at better price than what I came across. In fact, the day I bought my GT225, I looked at a 2004 GT235 in excellent condition. Asking price on GT235 was $3000 and the lowest he would go was $2700. Both sellers knew I was looking at the other tractor and I had already negotiated a price on the GT225 at $1700. So, I went with $3000 in my pocket and I could have gone home with the GT225 and $1300 left or the GT235 and $300. The GT235 was a great condition unit and the twin cylinder Kawasaki was sweet, but driving home with the extra $1000 and a great condition GT225 was too much to pass up. You mentioned tilling, if you were just looking at mowing, light towing, etc, I'd suggest considering a used LX series. I didn't go look at any, but I ran across ads for many what looked to be very nice condition LXs in the $1500 range. Good luck whichever way you go.

i dont know when they changed the model # ,s. there is no diff between the jx75 and the 14sb-at least till this last year. the jx75 was re-desighned and for the worse! the deck is condsiderably cheaper looking and now sports the woefull fc180 (which has had more than its share of teething issues).the slow selling jx85 was dropped and i have a newer model with bbc and an old 14sc whic is the same except no bbc. this 14sc is the best lawnmower i have ever used and i have used plenty in my long career

Unfortunately, I will not be getting this mower. I was hoping to get a great deal on one that just needed a carb cleaning, but the guy was kind of sleazy and I decided to heed my instinct and run away. But I'll know if one ever comes up again.

matt if you ever get a chance to buy one of these johndeere 14-jx series mowers -buy one! this is the best overall preforming lawn mower of all time! i thought my hydro honda from early 90,s was king and poo-pooed consumers reports for rating the 14sb top and honda second. well time passed and one day i saw a mint 14sb for sale at 125$ at a pawn shop. i bought it and was soon amazed at its preformance -it has NO flaws and does everying well. since i am a pro lawn care worker and have been since i was 19 -i am not eaisly impreessed but its hard to find fault in this masterpeice of lawn mower desighn. the fact that these sold like hotcakes at 750$ 10 yrs ago says something. there are many used ones on the market now so keep your eyes open

Does the grass stick to the left rear wheel on your mower? I have a '97 14SB and that is it's only flaw. Grass coats this wheel and leaves a neat straight line along the grass. Seems to do it no matter what the conditions. Doesn't bother me too much, I just overlap a little on the way back and cutover it. Other than that, a perfect lawnmower: starts on the first pull and the cut is absolutely flawless: a flat perfect cut and after a day or two you would never know you ran a mower over it.

I have a John Deere JX-75 with the Kawasaki engine,and as of today it has never mowed a blade of, was ordered from the Deere dealer in Greensboro, NC and was still in the box when i went to get it, the dealer reccommed adding the external oil filter kit to it which made it more like the JX-85 mower which at that time had already been discontunited, he told me when I left the dealership that i would one day get a lot of my money back for this model JX-75 mower because when it came out the next year it would not be the same mower as the one i had just purchased and someone who mowed grass professionally would one day really like to have the mower that I had just purchased, because it would by far be a better mower than the new replacing JX-75, so it was been put up in a building for several years now waiting on that day to come, it come's out several time a year and gets a splash of gas and ran for a few minutes until the gas is all gone the a little cleaming and a little wax and then back in the building it goes.

Who knows maybe one day I will find it a good home, lol
