toro 20066 oil drain question

very silly question from new toro 20066 owner. i accidentally put in too much oil. where exactly is the oil drain plug? it has a briggs and stratton engine, and the manual is of very little help in locating it.

Usually, you tip them on their side and drain the oil out the same tube you use to fill.

The manual tells you to tip the mower and dump it out the oil fill hole.

Thanks for the reply. Well, the grass is wet for sure since there is quite a bit of caked-on mulch under the deck. I clean it after every session. The problem is that the grass looks dry when I touch it. Lately the rains have been coming within 2-3 days so the grass grows lot faster and probably not enough time for it to dry completely. I couldn't find any lever that looks similar to the front ones. May be there isn't one. Someone who has a similar model can help here. Meanwhile I will look again. I tried side discharge last week. That was little better but still there were like big layers of grass clippings around my yard. Good thing, my mower didn't stop 10 times while mowing :) I surely need to use the bag next time or else my grass will mess up big time. I am now mowing once a week. The oil is black but still at the level indicated on the dipstick. Is that an indication of a problem? Thanks.

'Can the mower start without the blade mounted??' They're right, but don't forget it also has compression release. This would allow an easier pull, but it won't start because the blade weight is still required to swing it through until it closes. In the meanwhile, drain the fuel through the carb bowl by removing the brass bolt/orifice at the bottom - the bowl should stay on but can be pulled off at that time. Clean the jet and fuel holes in the bolt and replace. Use fresh fuel after you put the blade on and it should go.

FYI (means: For your information) there are marks on the bottom end/ side of the dip-stick that show you when you have enough oil in the engine. This provided you have the machine on a flat, level surface! So, here's how we all do it: After you have drained out the oil, replace the drain plug, or turn the shut-off valve to "closed" position. Then sit down beside the engine, on the dip-stick side, and pour in several ounces of oil. Try the dip-stick check, by inserting it all the way down the tube, then take it out and look at it. If it needs more oil, put some more in it, then check it again. (By more oil, i don't mean the whole quart at one time !!!) add it sparingly, until it reaches the full mark on the dip-stick. You may have to wait between dip-stick insertions, until the oil has a chance to run down and settle. Just be sure you wipe the stick off between insertions. A question: Does anybody younger than sixty know how to check the oil in any type of engine that has a sump, or oil pan? Do they know, or even see those little marks on the dip-stick? Or, what they mean? Several folks have told me how their engine became "oil-bound". "Well, i just filled it to the top of the dipstick tube, until it wouldn't take any more!" Another "Rant by Rusty"

Thanks Ewalk. Is what you're suggesting to address the auger not moving? Because there is more going on, now. The electric starter worked, but there's a new twist: when I put it in gear or try to engage the auger, it stalls. Do you think the friction disc, etc., could cause this? Geesh. I looked at the parts diagram and at the starter, trying to find dogs, and I'm wondering if part of it broke off and the dogs ran away. It's either that or the parts diagram is of a different starter than what I've got on there. Can you tell, looking at the photo, if something is missing? With the recent development with it stalling, I'm feeling in over my head now, regarding getting the thing to work, unless anyone wants to try giving me pep talk about it not being so hard. The trick is, there's about 100 yards of snow, four feet high, between the machine and the road, where a vehicle could access it. I've spent about five hours with my shovel, since yesterday, thinking relatively unkind thoughts about this machine, which I liked pretty well until this year. (And I did replace the oil this past summer, and I think the spark plug last year.) Is this just normal periodic maintenance, or is it reaching the end of its useful life? --Jonathan

Tip the machine on it's side and drain from the dipstick tube. Most mowers no longer have a drain plug.

actually the engine manual that came with my mower says there should be a side or bottom drain. i take it this all the way below the mower? if i'm going to have to get under the mower to get at either drain plug i guess i may as well tip it.

is it safer to tip it so that the gas fill side is at the bottom edge or the other way around?

Many of the newer Toro's with self propelled have a belt guide in the way to use bottom drain. Any with a BBC you cannot get to the bottom drain so tipping to drain out the fill hole is how its done these days.

When you go back and look at the mower, you'll find that the fuel fill will be on the carburetor side so it will be on the high side when you tip the mower to drain the oil. Obviously, the oil fill/drain will bo on the other side. Always tip the mower up with the carburetor side high when you need to access the under-deck area for any reason. Oil will flood into the engine intake tract if the mower is tipped too far with the carb down.

I went to the TORO site, looked at the owners manual and it has a PICTURE!

yes, i realize that. it's not a very helpful picture, however, especially for one as mechanically illiterate as me.

from other discussions here i'm guessing the drainplugs are under the mower. wouldn't it just be easy for the manual to say, turn the mower over or elevate it to get at the drain plug? and if you're going to have to turn it over to get at the drain plug might as well drain it from above.

In the "old" days, using the drain plug on the bottom was the usual method.
Anymore, many mower decks don't even have a hole under the drain plug.
Add the various belts, BBC's etc that would probably get "oiled up" and then fail, it's just easier to do it from the top. Besides, many people wouldn't bother changing their oil if it took that much effort.
