Frankly, no grass requires as much potassium as it does nitrogen. The requirements of a plant don't change based on geography either. Your grass doesn't know if it is Florida or California. Your native soil might be naturally lower in potassium, but the needs of the grass don't change.

If your soil is low in potassium, by all means add some, but I'd steer away from liquids in fast draining soil. If you use something like Alfalfa as a fertilizer, it is around 3-1-2 and won't wash away.

I alternate between alfalfa, soybean meal and for the first time, I just put down Scott's organic choice.

I have also used bradfield's luscious lawn & garden 3-1-5. Its alfalfa based.

How strict of an organicist (is that a word?) are you? For straight potassium sources, sulfate of Potash isn't too bad for your beneficials. Wood ashes is about as organic as you can get. I just bought some Muriate of Potash (0-0-60), but it is a little worse for beneficials.

Greensand contains about 7% potassium and is a good soil amendment in general. It can be pricey though.

Nice to know you got more money than you know what to do with, that is the most expensive and least effective choice you could possible make. At $19 for a 13-ounces (1-0-4) bottle is enough to cover about 50/ft2 assuming you want to apply at the same rate as nitrogen at a rate of 1-pound per 1000/ft2

So that means you need about 20 bottles of the seaweed product for every 1000/ft2 of yard, which comes to about $400 per 1000/ft2. Looks like you are paying roughly 400 to 1200 times too much IMO.

Tell you what send me a check for $5000 and I will tell you have to get the cost down to about 25-cents per 1000/ft2 :>)

I'm using the Soluble Seaweed in a foliar sprayer at the suggested rate: Spray solution of 2 teaspoon to 1 gallon of water (to cover 1,000 square feet) per month (minimum 5 applications per season.)

This goes along way for a 4000sgft lawn. the tub is 11oz and I paid under 15 dollars.

No I am not crazy, do the math. At two teaspoons per gallon is just enough to feed a house plant let alone 1000/ft2 of lawn.

A typical lawn needs 1/4 to 1/2 pound of potassium per year in one single application. Your little 11-ounce bottle contains .0275 ounces of potassium, that is about 3.9 to 7.9 ounces short to cover 1000/ft2. So now how many bottles @ $15 does it take to apply ½ pound of potassium to 1000/ft2? LetÂs see 8/.0275 = ?

Oops I am crazy, I way under did the math, it would take 290 bottles @ $15 of the stuff to cover 1000/ft2 of lawn. Email me and I will send you the address to send the check too. :>)

Oops, my bad math, I had it right the first time @ 18 to 20 bottles per 1000/ft2. .04 x 11-ounces = .44-ounces of potassium per bottle. So 8-ounces of patassium / .44 per bottle = 18 bottles. Sorry about that!

Let me clarify this, so we can get on the same page.

I am not, nor ever was using the seaweed to supply all the nutrients/fertilize my lawn. That would be CRAZY!!! The seaweed has an insignificant NPK value, thats obvious. As stated above, I am using it as an organic way to supplement my regular feeding program. Seaweed is meant to be applied frequently, in small amounts, and has been for centuries.

Now, I am using seaweed (monthly) because it acts as a natural chelator. This means that the seaweed breaks down the nutrients that are already in your soil into a form that the grass can use. It contains a large complex of chelated minor elements, to help lessen or nullify minor deficiencies in plants. It also contains important bio-stimulants. It provides more than 70 minerals, growth hormones, cytokinin, auxins, vitamins, and enzymes. It aids in seed germination, assists in nutrient uptake, helps plants resists insects, disease, frost and heat stress etc.

I'll get that check right out to you.

to be fair, it did sound like you were trying to use seaweed liquid for extra potassium. That's why Texas Weed pointed out that it's very expensive product to get enough potassium.

Greensand has good amount of K but very slow acting. I'm not quite sure how it works when it just sits there at the top. Do you have earthworms that come up and pulls OM down?

Alfalfa is fine. Works faster than greensand, i suppose.

Skoot Cat my whole point is the seaweed is not even close to being a potassium supplement at the rates you are using it. Sorry if I offended you, was not my intention, rather to get your attention and think about the numbers, all of them including cost.

So letÂs say you wanted it as a supplement. What percentage are you looking for? 5%, 10%, what?

That little 11-ounce bottle only contains less than ½ am ounce of potassium. Now you said that your area requires as much Potassium as it does Nitrogen in a calendar year, right? Well SA needs about 3 to 4 pounds of Nitrogen per calendar year in 3 to 4 applications. Well do the math and see how much of that seaweed stuff you have to use to get to 5 or 10% of 3 or 4 pounds per year. (6.4 ounces is 10% of 4-pounds or 15 bottles per 1000/ft2) Even if you could afford it, since it is water soluble, it is gone just after a couple of good rains, right down the drain so to speak. Hope that makes since, dollar since that is.

If your soil is so sandy that it cannot hold Potassium, then find a source of Texas, Arkansas, or New Jersey Green Sand. It is a mineral like a ground rock. It is not water soluble and stable in the soil. If applied at the recommended rate of 40-pounds per 1000/ft2 will last 5 to 10 years with a single application. Then you can quit using all those expensive organic over priced MG voodoo products and just use straight Soy Bean Meal from the feed store. Alfalfa is OK, but requires 2 to 3 times more product than SBM.

Lou, greensand on top is fine. As it rains, it will disolve a little and perculate down where and when needed.

I've used maybe 200lbs of greensand per 1000sqft on my lawn past couple years to try and offset alkaline soil (caliche soil) and my lawn is about as green as it can get. Impressive. I'll try and take pictures and post them to show ya'll what I'm dealing with. I wouldn't recommend this method on acidic soil though. maybe 10lbs per 1000sqft per year at the most.
