magical garden visitor

As you know, I'm renovating my kitchen. Everything's been pulled out and we're now eating TV dinners or using a camping stove to cook on.

Today I decided to make something for dinner while it was still light using the camping stove that we could re-heat later on in the microwave. We usually eat at 7:30 - partly because we go to bed so darned late.

So me and DH are on the verandah and I'm gabbing away (nothing new or magical about that, right? HA!) and watching the pot (made tuna casserole) and I sit down while I wait for the food to cook.

I had been weeding around the new ponds which are becoming very neglected now that I'm working in the house. But it was so beautiful out today, Spring Fever had struck me and the weather, and I couldn't stay inside. I think we all know that one!

As I'm sitting there, I turn to look at the ponds, actually feeling rather disappointed that I hadn't done as much as I had hoped I would have. And then my eyes catch sight of....

I don't know!

Is it a fairy?

or a young Gnome since what or WHO was laughing at me from the area that will be my new Gnome Garden?

I'll let you decide....

(PS I was going to put this on the 'conversations' side, but since so many here create fairy gardens, myself included, I thought it appropriate to show this 'fairy' that I didn't even have to make! Oh, and I tried to get closer to 'him/her' but when I did he/she disappeared from view!)

OooooooH those michievious Fey! I'm wondering if that's a Brownie. Do you have any shoes in the house that need mending? He might have just been waiting to sneak into the house when you finally went to bed!

A-ha! I knew it was more likely a tree frog than a toad. It had more delicate features. And I also was thinking about whether or not I'd heard any singing. Thanks. Last year, there was the most beautiful green tree frog in the tall boxwood hedge in the secret sunken garden. It had no markings like the gray.

Right now the porterweeds are being used the most. I have three types of large porterweeds--red, lavender and dark purple. The hummers love all of them. Also the red firespikes are favorites now. The Hamelia Pantens (firebush) are in full bloom and they get a lot of use as do a number of salvias---probably the favorite now is Phyllis Fancy. Finally, the white cestrums are excellent for both hummers and butterflies. They keep going through blooming cycles. If you want any cuttings just let me know.

The robin is being persistent in trying to build a nest by the front door lights. I've taken down nest material three times today. You would think the robin would get the message. I haven't seen the geese around since I took the picture. We do have a stream that runs in the back end of the property and the ditch at the front of the property has a bit of water streaming through. Many of the farmers in the area have ponds but not us.

They are okay in deep deep shade with very good ventilation. They can handle a lot of cold in the winter too (our kind of cold lol) and like it. Summers are harder but they do okay. Wild rabbits live outside in the summer and they arent all dead! They thrive here in Florida. They shed some of their coats and grow them back in fall. Make sure they get lots of fresh cool water. I also keep 2 liter soda bottles, filled with H2o in the freezer and put one in their hutches if its gonna be especially hot. They will lay near them if they are too hot. Some people give bunnies a frozen treat once in a while. You can look up recipes online. Beware of giving them too much of the fruits that are high in sugar.

Love that pic .... fun thread, Cait! Keep your camera ready, he/she will be back to visit you, I'm sure :-)

Spring beginning there, and turning autumn here. Gotta bring a whole lot of container plants into the basement next month for winter storage.

I plan to do some crafts in the basement over the winter, all while you're outside playing in the dirt! ~tenderlee

Princess Mimi, I would have never thought of a FEY!! How cool is that!

Actually, the sun was shining today and the electrician was doing his thing in the kitchen, so I had some time to play outside today! Well, not play... just weed. The garden's a mess and everyyone is freeking out that there might be another fire like we had last year... but I doubt it. We've had very good rain this winter, rained all day yesterday and is supposed to rain all weekend.

BUT... was sitting on the stoop and looked to see if I could still see 'Fey'... and now it looks like an old man! Sorry, no pic. DH said it looked like an old Aboriginal, and sure enough it did! Wild!
