no rear wheel drive- honda hrr216 tda

The drive clutch lever has no spring tension, it will stay in any position, the transmission cannot be engaged to drive the rear wheels.

Is my transmission broken, if so can it be repaired or must it be replaced?

It appears the transmission has a lever that hooks to a cable.

I would venture to guess the cable broke or became disconnected.

I wish that were the case. The cable is fine, looking at the drawing of the tranny, item#8, the clutch lever, it moves freely but the clutches either don't engage or they are glazed and just slip. either way its time for a new tranny ;-(

I am having a similar problem. Rear wheels lock up when I try to pull backwards. Goes fine going forward. I cleaned and checked the pinion gears, half-moon pin, and spring. Needed cleaning, but all were intact. Removed cover from bottom to expose transmission. Freed the area of all of the built up grass. Cable moves freely now, and the arm on top of the trans. is o.k. I double checked for positioning of the pinion gear, and that checked o.k. Still having a problem with the rear wheels locking up when backing up with the bail released. Any help or comments from anyone will be appreciated.

Rod, sounds like your dealer was working a little scam on you. His price reduction to $599 is what I paid for mine at Home Depot, its their every day price. Thats one of the problems with locally owned small dealers. They drop their price to what the big guys charge every day and make you think they are doing you a favor, or its a limited time special deal...so buy now. David, your yard is about the size of mine. The HRX may be overkill, but its just made a little better and hopefully will last a little longer. As I said, with Honda your not going to go wrong regardless if you buy the bottom or top of the line, IMO. Thats a choice you need to make based on what you want vs. what you have to spend. I'm thinking my HRX mower will last longer than I will remain in my current house and who knows what kind of yard the next house will have. Could be small, could be much bigger. To answer your question on switching between mulching and bagging on the HRX line, it can't be more simple. Your right, to switch between mulching and bagging on the HRR line you have to remove the bag and insert the "mulching plug". The HRX line has the versamow system. There is a lever that has 10 setting from 100% bag, to 100% mulch with 8 levels in between where you can partially bag. I found this most useful in my lawn by getting rid of some leaf accumulation I had. Chop them up into smaller pieces for a little mulch and bag the excess in one pass. I don't do this but if you had a compost pile and wanted to mulch as well it would be great. I'm not sure if I have the patience for composting.

Easy job. Tilt mower up on it's right side wheels so air intake is on the high side. Do what NH Sam said but first take a piece of wood like a short section of 2x4 and block the blade with it. Loosen the two smaller bolts, not the center one, and take the blades off. Sharpen the blades and replace unless they are too worn or damaged. Make sure when you replace the blades that the one without the lift foils goes on top. Make sure the sharp edge is pointed in the right direction and the blade is not upside-down. Tighten bolts after blocking the blade in the other direction. Remove wood block, set mower down on it's wheels and start mower to check for vibration. Check the cut on the grass and you're done. Also, directions should be in your manual.

I've had this lawnmower now for about 2 years ie, 2 grass cutting seasons. The first week I had it, the drive belt kept coming off. I kept putting it back on and it eventually stayed on with no problems. Never did figure out why it kept coming off. At the start of the second season, the roto-stop lever stopped functioning. I could not keep the blades turning upon release of the lever. So I had to bungie cord the lever in the forward position to keep em' turning. It is more difficult to start now because the blades are engaged all the time. I just ordered the roto stop control assembly for $30.00. I have also experienced the lack of seals at the bagging connection area. I haven't experience a great muching mower yet and this one still does not qualify. There are still grass trails occuring. The fancy 2 bladed system does not impress me, just harder to sharpen. The motor is great. I haven't had any problems at all. I give the motor 5 out of 5 and the rest 2.5 out of 5. This is an expensive average mower. I expected better for the money. I believe my next mower will be a lawnboy. I thought Honda was a better mower, it isn't. I had the used lawnboy I bought before the Honda for 15 years and it ran flawlessly until it gave up and totally died one day. GS

Since the only option seems to be a replacement, you really can't hurt anything by "trying" to fix it.

Maybe a nut holding the lever on loosened up?? Can you feel if the shaft actually rotates?

I didn't remove the drive assembly. Because of how and where it is located the only way I can see if the shaft turns with the lever arm is to remove it from the mower. I'll give that a shot tomorrow.

I read all of your posts and thank you for you input. However if your cable is activating the lever on top of your gear box, there is two thing it could be. For me it was both. I removed the rear axel assm. then removed the pan off the bottom of the tranny to find a pile of brass shavings at the bottom. the worm gear was fine but the crown gear, mesh side, was mashed. one trick if you want to save money you can remove the crown and turn it 180 Deg. giving you a fresh side of the gear to use. By the way
, the cause of the problem was that there was about 1 ounce of gear oil put in by the factory. ``how nice``. Anyway I put it back together just to find out that it still slips. Took it apart again and added a washer in with the clutch plated adding pressure when drive is engaged. filled it with gear oil, reassembled the transmission and it works like the the day i bought it.
Or you can just buy a new one. 400.00 dealer or about 150.00 on the net. I took it as a challange.

I ended up replacing the drive assembly. My local dealer charged me $110.00 for it. It was a little of a challenge removing it, I don't think Honda expects it to be replaced ;-)

I discovered on my model you adjust the clutch tension by moving the cable assembly up at the top where it is fastened by the lever. There should always be spring tension when the clutch is engaged. there wasn't on mine and that caused the clutch to glaze and cease functioning.

I ran over a pipe and it shot out and ripped the left rear tire. It also broke the left adjuster arm. I got the parts already and removed everything except the broken adjuster arm. Can anyone tell me how to remove it? Thanks
