G'day to all! A Chamber of Commerce day here in central Georgia. Been out in the workshop building a table for a farmer friend of mine and starting to get in the short rows with it. The same table on the internet sells for $549 with shipping. Just a token of appreciation for all the help that my life long friends do for me and my family. I am chomping at the bit to get started planting. Corn will probably be the first thing I plant as it can handle a frost and keep on ticking. Yall mentioned earlier about planting cowpeas in the corn. I tried it, but didn't care for it as corn loves nitrogen and peas don't need much of it or you get a lot of vines and not many peas. Plus, my favorite cowpea is Red Rippers and they make a heck of a bush with runners. It gets too 'snakey' to harvest either of them! I live near Eastman, Georgia (Home of Stuckey's candies) and buy my seed at a local home garden center (Chas Mar) as they have a good selection and are reasonably priced compared to ordering from the internet. Soon I will be taking my wife down there to choose the peas and beans she wants me to plant this season. My wife was born and raised in Jacksonville, Florida, but loves the country. It does my heart good to see her so pleased at looking at the different kinds and making choices. Getting all sloppy now... lol Mr. Brown, I have a friend that lives in Avon Park, Florida (below Orlando) that loves gardening too and wonder if your 'winter home' is near there? George, we should keep quiet about the country life... hee hee We might not be in the country long if the word gets out... Shot

dlm2000: WOW, you get the "green thumb" of the week! Thanks for posting the picture. We've located a wire crib like the one in the pic but still has the roof on it. In our plans is the crib being set over a tree (dead and pruned to about 10' tall) and putting the electrical outlets and lights on/in the tree. Believe it or not, my sweetie-pie husband is going to pour a concrete footing ledge for the crib to set on. Of course this is done AFTER crops are in, hogs are shipped, etc, etc, etc. Thanks again for the update. PS: I just love this site!

Thank you so much for the replies, everyone! To answer some questions: To test to see if the plant needs watering, i usually stick my index finger down into the soil and if it feels dry, i give it about 1/2 of a liter of water. I usually put the cold and hot water on equal amounts so the water is lukewarm . The terracotta pots the corn plants are in is 11 inches. There is a big issue with light in my house. I live in the middle unit in a condo so I have NO East or West facing windows, they are all North or South. The only North facing window that gets adequate light is on the 2nd floor where it is warmer, but there's no real place for the plant. I may move it up there though after what naturelover said. I never even thought about the cold that could draft in from that window. Yes those are patio doors they lead out to my backyard and are really the only source of bright light I have for my plants. So here's what I'm thinking. I probably killed this plant in many ways, not just one. I probably poisoned it with Miracle Gro (foolishly thinking it wouldn't go into shock if it had food to eat, hey that's what I'd want is plenty of food if I were moving into a new home, but I guess plants may feel differently). I probably drowned it. And then I probably froze it. Haha. Miracle it's still alive at all. This is what I'm going to do: Prune the dead, brown leaves. Soak the pot and shower my plant as breenthumb suggested. Move the plant to a warmer, non-drafty room where it will get slightly less light, but hopefully will be happier. Don't water the plant for a couple of weeks. Pray. Should I leave the pale leaves on and hope they recover? In the future, is 1/2 a liter of water too little water or "little sips" as rhizo said? Mind that these plants are about 3ft high and in a 11 inch terracotta pot. I'm at work right now, but I'll post pictures of my plants and of their new locks when I get home. Let me know if there's anything else you guys think I should/could be doing to save my little ones :) & Again thanks so much :)

twomonths: Thanks for the web site at the mustard seed. You won't BELIEVE this but my mom gave me her old Midwest Living mags and I found an actual COLORED pic of our crib, complete with table, chairs and morning glory climbing the wire!! Yes, it has earned the valuable spot on my refrigerator--right next to the 12 grandkids!! Our crib doesn't have the iron posts, all wire. We plan on attaching it to our raised deck and putting in a floor that's attached to the tree. The "lower" level will be made into a sand box (with a closeable door to keep out farm cats, coons, skunks, etc out of the fun!) Now that I think about it, it will probably resemble a big bird-brain house! (and our farm is like a zoo at times :-) Yuh, our neighbors are already used to our "recycling to decorate" activities. I just wish they'd schedule their drop-in-visits to when we need that couple of extra hands! I'll keep ya all posted on the July progress (grandson leaves August 6th so that's the deadline).
