Replaced Troy-Bilt drive belt, now won't start.

In doing the belt I turned it on its' side. According to one responder that probably drained gas into the carburetor and or plug.

So dumb question how do I get to or for that matter find the carburetor bowl??

I wouldn't worry about the bowl. You'll probably have to change the air filter. Remove the filter and try to start it.

Also, remove the spark plug, check to see if it's dry and pull the start cord to see if any liquid is in the cylinder. Reinstall the plug or a new one.

don't feel lonesome afriend of mine got gave to him a 21" selfpropelled,electric start he said that after w while of mowing it would die gas would come out of the carb. found part # ordered one from ebay put it on today start die start die,took it off clened up the old one mowed about 30feet started spitting spurtting then dead it will not hit a lick primer bulb is working insted of shooting a mist into the carb it spewes out of a brass pipe in the carb. could almost run back out spraye carb cleaner in it won't hit a lick.going to try one more carb. if it don't work to the dumpster it goes i even did a compression check 100psi that's good enough to run on.seems to me like troy bilt had a bunch of 2nds not up to standard quality passed them of to lowes and other places got a lowes hot line going to call tommorrow see what they say.not mine they may not talk to mei don't know when engine cos. quit rating engines in hp this is 7.00hp bought a new bolens it's ccs.

You left gas in the carb for long time, even you vitually inspect the internal of the carb, it might not be good enough. Get SeaFoam and run a tankful and see what happen since you can somehow start it. If you are going to leave gas in the trimmer for storage, use Stabil from now on. The way I store stuff is to empty the tank, run it dry, close the choke, prime the bulb, hold full throttle and start it and let it run to stop, and keep pulling while holding full throttle. This should pull all the gas out of the carb. THis work only on handheld trimmer etc.

You certainly should have a steady (small) stream of fuel with the bowl off. If you pull the float and float valve does the stream improve? If not noticably, check for an obstruction- take the tank off, that lovely kinked fuel line they come with, check the fuel shut off valve if it has one etc. If it does improve simply by removing the float valve there is corrosion or dirt that must be cleaned out. When it all goes back together ,the float should also work freely. If that doesn't work, maybe buy thinner gasoline. . .. ;)

Well, i bought my belts at a local store that has or will order new matching belts for tillers, or anything else. They sell lots of parts, and will order anything i need! Check in your area--there must be someplace where you can buy parts, belts, etc. But not Home Depot, Lowes, or any place like that! And, automotive belts will not last as long as the kind used in mowers and tillers. As for replacing the double belts, its a bit tricky, but not that tricky! Here's how to do it: Move the clutch handle to loosen tension on the belts. Then, first thing, take forward belt off lower front pulley, and rear belt off rear upper and lower pulleys, and slip it out. Then remove front belt. To install the new belts: Hang front belt over the front upper pulley, but not the lower one. Slip the rear belt in under the front and into the rear lower pulley, then install it in the top rear pulley. Then slip the front belt over the lower front pulley, and its done. you may have to adjust the sliding block, but that isn't too hard to do. It might not let the handle stay in position if its out of adjustment. HTH: Rusty Jones

From what i have read already, i think your best bet is to seek local professional help! Its clear to me that you must be excellent at computer work, but--well--better leave the gasoline, internal combustion machinery to the experts! I say this so you won't lose time in asking a lot of questions here. We are glad to help others, but they must have at least some idea of how internal combustion engines work!

Took out the filter and spark plug let them dry out, but still didn't start. .

A couple of times the cord was jerked very hard out of my hand, with no spark.

What else could be wrong?

If the cord was jerked out of your hand, the flywheel key could be sheared. Also, you can't dry out an air filter or plug. Replace them.

From what you say, As in the cord being jerked out of you'r hand. Sounds like its out of time. By that I mean the flywheel key being partially sheared. Variuos things can cause it. As in killing the motor on A obstruction, A backfire, Or misfire. Which often happens when things break and you shut down the motor at A high speed, Or maybe it was just ready to go. The key is made soft on purpose to protect the motor in case of A malfunction that could damage it.

Thanks for all the advice.

The tiller was working fine before the belt broke. Started easily. Now new belt and it doesn't.

A sheared pin sounds serious. Possible it could of sheared at the moment the belt broke? I suppose that might of happened. But as I recall after the belt broke I believe we started it a time or two to try different things to see what was wrong.

How annoying. I'm even thinking about buying one of those hand tillers or just string trimming the tall weeds in the corners of the vegetable garden. Or even hoeing. Might end up being less work and less frustration!

Check for spark at the plug, install a new plug if the old one is black or wet. Remove the air filter. Spray starting fluid into the carb and try again.

Sound as if changing belt some way belt to tight good way that could happen old belt adjustment make new to tight other if single belt machine belt in one wrong pulley grooves. This make neutral belt to tight. leave air filter out while trying to crank if oil got in filter it want dry out you have to replace filter. New belt shorter than old belt that throw all adjustments out like reverse and forward. I agree others that crankshaft kickback caused by key sheared if is you need torque flywheel nut when replace key 70 foot pounds.
