Austransplant showed a photograph of a Seckel on OHFx513 and asked for comments on pruning it. I gathered that Don felt that pruning should be deferred a year, but I'm not sure what he meant, and would like more discussion of it.

It was my thought, on seeing the photograph, that all of the large spreading branches could be headed back 1/3 or so this dormant season, in the hope of stimulating some of the lower branches. I also thought that those lower branches, which are just a few leaves right now, could be thinned to three or four well-placed ones. The goal is a vase, as Austransplant said.

But, I get muddled on this subject, and have to struggle through it sometimes. Is my idea on the right track but the wrong year, the right track the right year, or just the wrong idea?!

The limb-spreading suggestion I made on Austransplant's pear tree was not only to begin to establish the tree's framework, but to reduce apical dominance, or the tendency to grow upward. Branches pulled or pushed down closer to horizontal will usually slow their growth. It is common to find 3 or more central vertical branches on young pear and apple trees, but pruning each of them back will usually result in a flush of new grow at each of the pruning sites the following season, and is unlikely to stimulate lower branching. If you want to select one as your central leader, and grow the tree in that style, then you would completely remove all but one, leaving that one alone in the hope it would grow laterals as it continues its upward growth.

In the case of Austransplant's tree, I think he/she has perfectly good branches there that could form the basis for a nice, vase-shaped scaffold. I do not underestimate the difficulty of bending those branches down and holding them there in the right position, but it can be done with a little work and imagination. The ideal angle for the branches of a vase-formed tree is 60 degrees or more, but this does not have to be achieved all at once. For now, I would try for 40 or 45 degrees, depending on the flexibility of the branches, then follow with more bending next spring. Once the bends are set, they will not change. The vertical branches on Austransplant's tree originate at about the right height for a vase tree, and there would be no need to try to stimulate branching further down the trunk. Once the existing branches are spread and apical dominance defeated, the tree is unlikely to grow in more central vertical branches.

I think this procedure would result in more precocious fruiting, and a lower, spreading tree, which is certainly easier to maintain in all its requirements.

One statement gives me something to chew on in particular, ("Once the existing branches are spread and apical dominance defeated, the tree is unlikely to grow in more central vertical branches.") but I'll take that up in another post some other time.

It is not usually necessary to turn water sprouts into fruiting units as many apple varieties bear best flower buds on undisturbed second year wood (the moderately vigorous annual shoots). Unless you are talking about espaliers. There are also varieties that bear their best apples on the tips of last years wood. I never need to create bud wood by heading back water sprouts- never. Not with any species. It is probably something I could use with super vigorous and vertical growers like N. Spy but I don't have time to keep coming back and prefer just to festoon uprights in the winter. The following winter they've sent up more uprights from the bent wood which I remove all but least vigorous and next harvest season the lower part of bent shoots usually have fruit. After a couple years of doing this overexcited growth usually calms down. There are many ways to skin a cat. Some take more time.

Looking for help re damaged young fruit trees

Here are a few photos of some of the damaged trees. The first is a sweet cherry, which looks terrible on one side and not quite so bad on the other (see the 2 views below). We cleaned up all of the lifted bark and took off the girdled branch (farthest to the left in the first photo) and hope that the tree will heal. I'm planning to look for the tree wound dressing suggested by Konrad to treat the damaged areas. As you can see, the plum tree below is a mess. It was pretty much girdled, so we cut it off just below the top of the mouse guard. Would it be better to just leave it like that and rely on the new growth that will hopefully develop, or would it be preferable to graft onto it later in the spring? I saved some scion wood from it in case we should try grafting. We did the same thing with another plum and a cherry and we're also wondering about the apricot shown below. The peach tree below is one of the lesser damaged trees, but there are extensive patches of removed bark. The picture shows the tree after we trimmed the damaged areas. That is all we did on this one. Does anyone have an opinion on its chances of survival? Would it be safer to cut if off below all of the damage? This last picture is an apricot. On this one we thought that we would try just cutting off the central leader and leave the 3 scaffold branches, but I realize that this might be risky. The damage on the trunk below those branches does not go all the way around, but it is somewhat more than 50%. There is a patch of removed bark on either side of the trunk with thinner strips of intact bark between them just below the branches. Would it be wiser to cut it off below all of the damage? Clare: Open center, hands down. Your newly-planted trees are already the same height as my pear trees that have been in the ground for 15 years -- and it's not because of the rootstock, it's pruning and training. I would not have purchased and planted trees of this size, since I prefer to begin training well before they achieve that height. Horizontal branches are fine; vigorous central growth is not. Tying the branches down is one technique, branch spreaders is another. To control growth, try pruning in late summer. European pears are often slow to begin bloom and fruiting, but I have found that training to a vase shape and pruning in summer reduces the time required. Nurseries often like to sell very tall trees at premium prices since many people believe taller is better. The opposite is the case. Don Yellman, Great Falls, VA

Hi Jiver! I live north of Detroit and also have a HoneyCrisp. This is its fourth year of life. The first year that it fruited we had about five gorgeous and tasty apples (that is all it gave us). Last year it was full of apples, but it was also full of every pest and fungus known to Michigan apples (Cedar Apple Rust, flyspeck, Plum Leaf Curculio, apple maggot, web worms, leaf roller, and more)! I was a newbie and had no clue how to prepare for it or what to do about it. This year I have read up and am hoping for better success. I want to avoid chemicals so am climbing uphill. I would love to keep up with you as we both attempt to keep our apples healthy to harvest so maybe we can learn from each other. I cleaned up every leaf and dropped apple, threw away all the bad apples from the tree, and carefully inspected the tree (often) for signs of bad leaves or bugs (which I pinched off upon discovery). I semi-thinned (left two or three on each bunch) my apples out a few weeks ago but hadn't yet learned about bagging. I sprayed it with copper soap and a soap spray distributed by Gardens Alive to control fungus. This method requires reapplication every 7 days AND after every rain. This is high-maintenance but not a big deal when you only have one tree. I just bagged my tree this week and noticed as I was out there that several of the baby apples had bug bites already. I am afraid this means they've been parasitized, so I clipped them off and threw them away. I thinned to only one or two apples on a bunch and bagged all that looked healthy. I hated to clip off all those with bug bites, but I should still have over 100 large apples to harvest. I think next year I will be sure to bag it the week BEFORE Memorial Day since this week (the week following Memorial Day) there was a fairly high incidence of insect activity. Don and Mark,

From what I've read and experienced on my apple tree, heading off branches will tend to stiffen them and make them harder to bend later on. So it seems that, since a vase shaped tree would be fine for me, the best course for me is to bend the branches down as much as possible and not worry about doing any pruning. In fact, they are still reasonably flexible, and I think could be attached to weights or stakes now unless there is some good reason to wait until spring to do so.
