remember the tall vases?

Here's what I did with one of them. I got the gazing ball for $1 at a GS. Glued them together glued a heavy plate to the bottom and put it in the yard!! Hope you like it. What fun I'm having!!!

Well, while I was away I think I missed your tall vases, but what a great stand one made for your gazing ball. It's colorful and I love the bend! Great job!

"Feathers are the small branches with wide crotch angles on the nursery stock at planting. You need a nursery tree with 10-12 feathers at planting. At least if you want the early production needed for early payback. Hangers and risers are branches hanging down or growing up from a scafold. At least that's my understanding." Just as our fruitnut said. 'nut, a tree that is ten feet across, or even eight feet across is not that narrow. At least not to me. And yes, when you remove a scaffold you cut it back to a one or two inch stub so that it will send out a new shoot that will become a scaffold. Scaffolds come off the CL at a hoped for right angle. Leaving that stub is the hardest thing for a pruner to do. They all want to cut it off entirely. Even after doing it for a day or two they will revert. You want all of these scaffolds as they are not long and the ones in the top are short, maybe not more than a foot long. So not much shade. I do almost no pruning until the tree starts to bear. But some tying down would be good. glib, I grow Gingergold, Pinklady, Rome. This method is not used on the Rome. Actually all three of those are tip bearers and I prefer plain CL on them. I did grow Fuji using this method and have since 1982 or 85? Just pulling out the last of the Fuji. I have always called this method the French Axe. It works very well on Gala or Golden or Jonagold or anything that isn't an extreme tip bearer. IMHO I don't have curculio or maggot. Or chickens for that matter. Reading these posts I know that my growing conditions are much easier than those of you who grow back east. I do have neighbors, however.

Butterflyalley, Oh, I don't know if you can be more impatient than I am though. ;-) I see all these beautful butterflies that other people get and I want so much to be able to get them here at my place, but I guess I'll have to wait and see. I never real good at waiting. I'll tell you, I didn't have to wait at all for the Monarchs. I started my garden in late 2005, I guess too late for the Monarchs to lay eggs on the milkweed plants that I had bought (there were only two anyway). Last year I planted 26 Butterfly Weed and still had the two Swamp Milkweed from the year before. I ended up raising 70 Monarch cats to adulthood and released them and just loved it! I never dreamed that I would have that many so soon. I'm planting even more this year than I did last year and have learned so much here on the forum and know more now what to plant to get what butterflies. I'm trying to plant at least two host plants for the butterflies that I'd like to attract here, but then it's up to them to find me. I was hoping that the biggest my garden the better the chances of them finding my place. I'll have such great fun watching them this year! I shouldn't set my expectations too high though since it is just the first year for these perennials I just started indoors a week or so ago. I doubt if they'll be big enough to host anything this year. I did plant snapdragon seeds indoors to plant out in another few weeks, so I can always hope that some Buckeyes will come here and lay eggs on them. I hope you can attract a lot this year. I got pretty many butterflies last year, my first year. I don't count 2005 because I was just starting to plant a few things in early September. Ha, yeah, that would be funny watching you get those willows from the boat. I'd almost be afraid to do that because knowing me I'd fall in the water. That is so very nice of you to offer to mail some to me. Let me see how I make out for sure and then I'll let you know if I need any. I'd hate for you to send some and then say later, "Guess what..." Wow, you must be really happy with those trees that you have. Best of luck getting cats on them! Cathy

Trish, THAT'S IT!!!!!!!!My husband and I have been drawing some carts, and the idea of wheels does appeal to both of us, and is the look I want. I just filled out my application today, haven't turned it in yet, but at the moment I'm not sure if they'll let me set up where I'd like to. I have attatched a letter to the application explaining why I want to be in a certain spot. This town is a really quaint little place. The town is along a harbor, with a long warf where all the fishing and scallop boats come in. The town has a boardwalk along the water, and the place I want to be is at the entrance to the boardwalk, which is in-between 2 buildings (but plenty of space) where there would be shelter from the wind, and partial shade, and it's in the middle of town. I'm not sure if they'll let me set up there, and also not sure if I can leave the cart. That would obviously be the easiest, but then I'd worry about vandals. (It doesn't happen often, but does happen) So, if I need to break it down, and take it home, I have to have this easy to do by myself, but the idea of transporting the buckets in the box is a good one. The picture you posted would be just the type of cart that would look great in the town. Thanks so much for the post. Now to just figure out what to make this out of, and where to find the canvas awning like the one shown, and wheels like those. I have some huntiing to do. Cheryl

Abe Darby has my favorite rose fragrance I've found yet, it's fruity & bright & just delicious. & honestly I didn't love the bloom on him at first either, pinks aren't my favorite, and there are so many other good ones to consider, but the fragrance won me over, and now I've grown to love the bloom as well. He's been in a pot the whole time I've had him & I just planted him in the ground, so I'm excited to see his blooms get even better! I'm glad you are enjoying yours!! It is lovely! In regards to the color being lighter, many things could cause it, weather conditions, amount of water or nutrients it has received. I wish I could give you an answer as to your specific situation, but I'm not as knowledgeable as some here, hopefully someone could give you some help with that! -Jessica

I love it! I remember them. That vase looks much better in the garden. What a great color! You had a good eye to spot their potential when they were on sale. It's perfect there and really looks good with the gazing ball.

I missed the vases too..... I really like this idea....is the vase crooked or bent or an optical illusion...looks really groovy curvy!!!

Thanks everyone. Yes the vase is crooked!! I have a blue one just like it!! Not sure what I'm going to do with it. Thinking bird feeder but haven't quite figured out how to make it set level on the vase. Any suggestions?

It looks like a big silver blossom! Very simple but cool combination. Now I can't wait to see what you do with the blue one. No suggestions on leveling the blue one though. :^(

regarding the blue vase/birdfeeder. What are you using for the feeder part that you are trying to make sit level on the vase?

This is just a thought- but, with all my critters, one of the things I always have to consider when putting things outside is how to keep it from getting knocked over.
What if you drove a pc of rebar or a wooden stake and slipped the vase upsidedown over it.
That might also help when you go to glue things to the top of it as you would have a small flat surface to work with.

Whatever you do be sure to post pics, that blue one is going to look outstanding in the garden!

Wow! I love this little *pop* of whimsy in your garden. The blue one would make a great stand for a bird spa. Look for a big, cloudy white bowl to use as the bath part.

What is your gazing ball made of. I found one at GW for $1.99. It is not as large of some of them...but it is a metal one...guess aluminum cause magnet will not stick to it. But metal cause it was scratched on the nickle sized flat spot on bottom and a bit rusted. Otherwise only one other small scruff on it. I love your set up there.

akup: Thanks for the suggestion. I'm sure having trouble finding bowls for the bb.
garden2garden: I haven't found anything for the top yet.I like the idea of the rebar. I ususally glue a microwave plate to the bottom to keep it from tipping but since it isn't straight have to figure out something.
Glad you all like it in the garden neighbor said it's ungly with all the different plants to many colors!
