Ryobi 790R 'EZ' Gas Trimmer Won't Start

I have recently been having issues with my weedeater mentioned in the subject line. A few weeks ago, I was having trouble with fuel leaking from the gas tank. I tracked that down to an incorrect sized fuel line that was allowing fuel to leak out around it. That was fixed, and there was no more leak.

Two days ago, I went to start it, and it wouldn't turn over. It had just run fine a few weeks ago, so I know the fuel wasn't bad. I pulled the spark plug, and there was crud all over it. I cleaned it up, then left it out with the plug cable attached to see if it was sparking; it wasn't. I bought a new plug thinking that was the fix. Well, the new plug wouldn't even spark, so apparently the problem starts somewhere before the spark plug.

Another thing to note, for a while now, when I pull the cord to start it, it would hang up from time to time. I always figured the pulley that the cord is wrapped around was grabbing or hanging up, but when I had the spark plug pulled out of the motor and pulled the cord, it was smooth as can be. This makes me think something is coming into contact with the spark plug, but there is no physical damage to the plug.

Can someone help?? Is it a plug wire? Any suggestions at all would help. I really don't want to buy a new weedeater!

Okay, no plug will spark unless grounded to the engine. The starter 'hang-up' is just compression - yank it on through. I have a Ryobi too, and mine also is hard to start. The reason is fuel starvation for whatever cause. Try this - take the little shroud off the carb area which exposes the air intake - put a few drops of fuel mix in the intake, replace the shroud, engage the choke and it should start. This will get you going, but sooner or later you either have to get a new trimmer or fix that one by overhauling the fuel system. Personally, when they start this I throw them out and get another one (usually 10 years or more). They're not worth taking to a shop and the crummy little carburetors will drive you crazy. I'm convinced these things are made by devils from hell and are designed to fail. I suppose I'll have to go get an Echo and be done with it. I have an old Mantis tiller with an Echo engine and the thing has been reliable and easy-starting for many years.

mwright: I would say that by the indication of your plug description that blow-by gases and over rich fuel conditions have caused some of your concerns. Pick up some fuel cleaner (concentrated) any brand is fine . Add 2 ounces to your fuel (fresh) and with your new spark plug you should be up and running . Fine tuning of the H&L speed jets is normal with these units seasonally along with ensuring air / fuel filters where applicable are clean . If after cleaning & tuning your not satisfied then as Sax has advised toss it , since compression may as plug has indicated may be down and these units do not lend to rebuilding . I love playing with these Old Units but Echo's are the way to go they are not nearly as temperamental as Weed Eater , Troy-Bilt and Ryobi . If you wish you could also consider Stihl but pricing is Hellish and some Models are just not much better than what you have lol .

Ebay has some good people selling those different type (splined, Pac-Man, D shape) diaphragm carb mixture screw head adjusting tools at lower prices. In a pinch, I have used an automotive type 22 gauge wire connector, forced it down around the screw head and turned them that way. Occasionally they just are in too tight for that to work, but ring terminal connectors (plastic) and female spade connectors work well!

I own a Troy Bilt TB475 which is a 26cc 4 cycle version trimmer for last 4 years. It start very easy, 2 pull max. It work well. For a while, I use it only ones every 2 months. I had it die on me once and I have to change the carb.(I got one from an old motor) It start working again. I am almost sure it is because I don't use it enough and I do not drain gas out after use and let it sit for months. It works a whole lot better than a Craftsman cheap trimmer I had before. It really smells a lot better than 2 stroke and quieter. I am planning to buy a new, more fancy ones( No better than it's a toy to me!!! 4 years is a very old toy). I have an Echo hedge trimmer HC150. It does not start as easy and smells bad. I know I know, everyone like Echo!!! It does smell!!! Takes 7 to 8 pulls to start. I open the motor, it is a half crank. I know people don't like it. I don't know why, all the very expensive model plane glow engine use half crank. They are very high performence, run up to 16000RPM. They can be over 10cc. I actually bought a used engine on Ebay and play with it(Toy!!) The housing is made of stronger alloy than all the other brands ( Echo, Shindaiwa, Stihl). Usually those crankcase are made of very soft material, you can break it off like plastic. Not the Troy Bilt. It is a 2 ring design, inside does look cheap, the connecting rod is made of stamped steal and the crank sheft is made of few thin piece revided together. But who is to say mill out is better. One of the most reliable gun UZI is made of stamped steal!!! Don't tell them they are no good. the new TB525 has more from what I heard.

Not sure whether the new Ryobi split-shaft trimmer will work with old attachments but some of the Toro and Trob-bilt machines are just Ryobis with different color plastics. If the old Ryobi is out of production it's a good bet the others are too, but if you look hard enough you can probably find one; maybe ebay. As far as split shaft combo units go, in my oppinion, it's better to get a machine that does one job very well than one that does 3 or 4 things just ok. As far as 2 vs. 4 stroke there are several options. Traditional 4 strokes (seperate gas and oil) are heavy and tend to leak oil especially when stored hanging up. I am not a big fan of these units but they are quieter. Second option is hybrid 4 stroke(engine with valves but you still have to mix oil and gas). Kind of new technology but the newer stuff is pretty reliable and quieter than traditional 2 strokes. Finally good old 2 strokes, call me old fashioned but these are still my favorites as far as performance and reliability if you are willing to shell out a few bucks more for a high quality unit. It's amazing the quality difference between the cheappies (ie. ryobi, weedeater etc.) and a good quality unit (echo, stihl) and the price difference is not too big. A good modern 2 stroke with quality oil should not smoke nearly as much as your old ryobi and probably perform much better. Let me know if you have any more questions. Will

I am suprised it lasted that long without rebuilding the carb. The rubber parts weed cutter is talking about are the pump diaphram, and the meteting diaphram. Wabro or Zama carb. kits are usually less than $10 bucks with the $3 can of carb. cleaner (which you should have already if you own a LT or Lawn mower) takes you total investment to about 15 bucks plus tax plus the labor and learning experience of trying to figure out how carb. work (that alone is worth $15 bucks if you can fix it). shops charge from 35 to 60 bucks for a carb rebuild. That's why most elect to trash them so I can fix them and get another 10 years of use out of them. Gas blowers are the only thing I can't get any more life out of. they are actually worn out between the piston and cylinder walls. Takes alot of power which wears parts to move air!!!!!!!!!!....atleast that's my theory???? i posted a great zama carb. breakdown, anyway if you try to rebuild it you will have to get the numbers stamps on the side of the carb. Wabro will be WTXXX, Zama will be CUXXX. the XXXs are the model numbers that will follow the letters on the carb. Well, obviously I'm not an electrician, lol (plug not sparking). I did try draining all the fuel, rinsing it out with some Seafoam, and adding some to the fresh fuel with no avail. I guess I will tinker with it some more, but it sounds like I'm in the market for a new weedeater.

No spark means bad coil if you get voltage out of coil then it's a faulty plug. No voltage out of plug wire means bad coil which is a easy fix.
