Fairy Garden

Hi! I'm new to the forum this week and I was in Cottage Gardens asking about a fairy garden I want to create for my two four-year old nieces. They love Tinkerbell and dressing up like fairies and are just becoming interested in the garden. While they had some very good ideas about plants and accessories, they suggested I ask this forum for any additional ideas. I do have an arbor and a bird bath and a small seating area.

The garden is on the east side of the house, divided by a grass path down the middle. On the shady side, I have some peonies, pansies, columbine and forget-me-knots. On the sunny side I have some butterfly bushes, coneflower and a miniature rose by the bird bath. I was also hoping to put in two small dwarf apple trees to go with the miniature blueberry bushes and strawberries. It's not really a big garden, but except for the grass path and a dividing path between the proposed apple trees, I hope to stuff in as many fun plants as I can. Thank you for any help you can provide.

Wow! What a wonderful start! I think most children like showy bleeding hearts. Some people on this site make very nice fairy houses, seems like bird houses would also be appropriate. Maybe your nieces could help you to decorate some for their fairy garden.

Glad to have you with us! If you go to the bottom of the page to the search bar and type in Fairy Gardens, you'll find lots of posts on making them and see all sorts of pictures from other GJers who have them in their own gardens. Some of them are just amazing! Let us see your projects too...we love pictures!!

I have an old regrigerator that came with the house and have it running in my garage. I use it for "overflow" such as an extra gallon of milk and for beverages. I am not a big beer drinker but a very cold one is nice coming in from mowing in really hot weather. I realize using something like this is not practical, but could be used in working out kinks. I have no idea whether a contolled very low light condition in summer, coupled with low temperature could be done. There are small water chillers and cold recirculating water could keep a cubic foot of air at 40 degrees without being too costly. In keeping marine aquariums metal halide lamps are often used for coral. They give off so much heat that chillers are needed to keep from cooking everything is a tank. These are quite small. I realize this is virgin ground. But who would have thought that putting a poinsietta in a closet would be a good idea. I was thinking about moisture and crown rot and would guess dirtless soil with moisture gels would need to be used also.

Also if you just do a general internet search...you will come up with lists of huge gardens full of smaller fairy gardens that have special open 'house' each year...kids dress up like fairies and have tea parties in some. I have a few boxes of stuff ready to put out and each time I start to..something happens and we shift the garden areas around...to accomodate dogs....to put in an above ground pool. That kind of things. I am ready to put mine in drawers that are in an ole dresser I have on patio....lol. See you can put them in drawers also...then they can be moved when the girls are not at your place. Just set the drawers out thru hidden areas in the garden and let them discover them.

Welcome, lavender! You need to plant some "hollyhocks"...they're really biennial, I think...don't bloom first yr., but 2nd & they re-seed & come up for me each yr. That way the girls can make "hollyhock dolls"...short & sweet fun project!

I'm not a lot of help since I have yet to make my first fairy house despite having all kinds of cool things to do it with. Thank you all for the great ideas! This is a very friendly forum :) Hollyhocks sound like a great idea and I will try to find some of the fairy garden "open houses" which sound like a lot of fun. You've all given me a lot to think about and I'll let you know as soon as I figure out how to post pictures. Some other people have been asking about fairy gardens on the cottage garden forum. I will tell them to look here for help!
