Bowling Ball Disaster...Help

OK...well, I admit it was my first attempt at bowling balls. Made two. Sanded down the clean bowling ball and used thinset to put pieces on. Grouted with ssanded grout, cleaned and then waited 21 days before exposing bb to weather. Well, should leave sleeping dogs sleep...cuz..today I was grouting something else in black and decided one of the bb's would look better in black grout than the white I used. WRONG. Suddenly the pieces were falling off the bb. The thinset did not adhere right. I think I have read that you need to use thinset for bb's. What did I do wrong? Tried to put it all back together because the pieces came off in hanks...got one put on and another section came apart. ARGGGGH. Just need to know what to do next time to avoid losing all that work. (maybe the answer is to not try to add new colored grout...lol). Thanks for your suggestions.
