Toro or Craftsman? Briggs & Stratton or Koehler?

We were at Home Depot Saturday and were surprised to see they are now carrying Toro lawn mowers (tractors?).

We will be buying a new one soon and had heard Toro is one of the best. However, after reading messages posted here, it seems the ones being sold at HD are not built by Toro, but by MTD. The sales people sure don't tell you this. We asked two different sales guys who said, "yes, it's built by Toro." (we were interested in the one for $1299). Does MTD not make good mowers?

Sears also has a Craftsman that we like for the same price. We are thinking about going with the Craftsman. Is there really a big difference in a B&S engine and a Koehler engine?

We have two level acres to cut and could use a bigger tractor, but $1300 is our budget limit. We have had a smaller Craftsman, 19HP/42" cut, for the last 10 years with no problems except the carburetor had to be rebuilt once. I have never used a bagger, just need something reliable to cut my grass.

My questions are:

1. Which engine to get? B&S or Koehler?

2. Any other brands around my price range that I should look at besides the Craftsman?

3. Automatic or manual? My wife wants an automatic. We have never had an automatic. I don't have any hills to climb, just don't know how reliable the automatic ones are and if the repair bill would be more on them.

1. Which engine to get? B&S or Koehler?
Answer: The Kohler Courage is offered in the single and twin cylinder. I have not heard of problems with this engine. The older Kohler Command had a few cases of blown head gaskets. For your price range, the single cylinder Kohler with a 42 inch mower would be a good choice if it is offered.

The Briggs single has had a few cases of blown head gaskets. Sometimes a bent push rod appears. The ELS models have full oil pressuse lubrication with filter as does the Kohler single. The Vtwin Briggs has been more reliable than the single. My Briggs choice would be the Vtwin with the 42 inch deck.

2. Any other brands around my price range that I should look at besides the Craftsman?
Answer: I never liked the lower priced MTD mowers including the Toro model made by MTD. White, Bolins and Troybilt are both MTD brands. These are lighter duty tractors than the other brands in the $1300 price range. I think you are better off with the craftsman in your price range

3. Automatic or manual? My wife wants an automatic. We have never had an automatic. I don't have any hills to climb, just don't know how reliable the automatic ones are and if the repair bill would be more on them.
Answer: Any automatic carries more risk than the manual type. Repair bills would be substantial. Automatics have been reliable however, and with the flat yard, this would probably be fine.

Larryf has a good handle on things. A couple of other points: The Toro XL series is a nice tractor, but I'm sure the desired HXL model with the hydro is 2 big ones plus. Look at the bottom of the Toro web site to see the real Toro riders. The Toro tractors at the HD are definately MTD built. If one isn't familiar with MTD products, you can tell by the style model # and MTD part #s all over the thing - even says MTD on the belt. I don't have a big issue w/ MTD products. They have several 42" deck models. As far as repairs go, the twin belt system on the Pony has a higher # of belt replacements in my world anyways. Cub Cadet (also MTD) is a more solid tractor. Lubable deck spindles a plus. Cutting 2 acres, get the best tractor you can afford. One other point on transaxels. If you get a model that you have to hold your foot on a pedal to propel the unit, your foot may get tired. Very cool for trimming where you have to vary your speed alot. Automatics are usually thought of as hydros, tho the MTD with the multiple speeds "shift on the go" are overall dependable, but certainly operate different that a true hydro. The Sears rider served you well and are certainly worth a look at. Husqevarna is built by the same company that builds the Sears. Best take a test ride and see what's best for you and your lawn.

When operating the mower over a dry, dusty surface, you will raise considerable dust. The fact that this even needs to be stated is sad. Anyway, with most current mowers that don't have a manual throttle, you're pretty much SOL. You can raise the cutting height but the best thing to do is wait until after a rain when the ground is a little moist. With the bag, the dust will be more directed at you, so we don't usually bag in dusty conditions. When bagging leaves, you typically will get leaf dust which will give most people allergy symptoms. A trick I use is to go over the leaf-covered lawn in mulching mode (possibly with the riding mower if you have one), which breaks down the leaves but makes a mess (if the leaves are thick). Then I go back over it with the bag on the regular 21" mower. The volume of leaves is greatly reduced not only because they are chopped up but also because half of the leaf material has been fine-cut and will stay in the lawn. so in this way you have maybe only 25% of the original leaf material to bag, which in many cases can be done on one bagful. At the same time you are putting nutrients back into the lawn.

Where is the blade edge in relation to the deck housing bottom? 1 inch isn't horrid, but I suppose if all the grass does is lay on top and dry out it isn't desirable. HAve you ever looked below a Toro recycler that has the little triangular plastic kickers in place? If there is room between the housing and blade- maybe a set of those screwed into the top of your deck may neaten things up a bit? A stealth recycler....

Realize that the new model TORO is likely is not the same quality as your 16 year old one! Case in point, my 14 year old Toro has some issue I can't figure out. She starts but blows some blue smelly smoke at first. She seems a bit underpowered and once run for a while it won't restart till it cools off. I tried a new coil...no luck. She has been retired to mulching leaves. Still 14 years!!! The new Toro has a Chinese engine...not sure how long it will last but its been fine for a couple of years now. Don't get me wrong, it seems way more study than Pop's $399 Honda jobber that cant mulch for crap...but its not quite the unit I bought 14 years ago. Funny, its cheaper now than back then!

I own a Craftsman LT3000 with a six-speed manual transmission. I've used this machine on one acre since the end of last summer without trouble. Here's the review I wrote last year... http://forums2.gardenweb.com/forums/load/tractor/msg081107371197.html The one cylinder Briggs Intek Plus engine starts and runs easily. There's plenty of torque even at low RPM. It has no trouble pulling a cart full of soil or stones. The manual transmission is strong, you'll spin the wheels before slipping a belt. As mentioned before, you choose the gear you need with your foot on the brake or stopped. Shifting while moving will shorten the life of the manual transmission. Here's a quick "how to" for the gears... - Lower gears are for pulling a heavy load or mowing very heavy grass. - The middle gears are best for most mowing or pulling moderate loads. - High gears are for when you are merely driving it or pulling an empty cart. - it's best to ease off the brake/clutch at low engine RPM. This keeps you from taking off too quickly. There's no need to rev the engine if you're just driving. It goes fast enough in sixth gear at low throttle to get you where you want to go. You can even pull a decent load at low throttle. However, mowing demands high engine RPMs. Otherwise, you will bog or stall the engine. Your cut will stink, to boot. The good and the bad... GOOD: Strong engine. Strong transmission Strong frame Good on gas Tight steering Metal hood Nice cut quality Oil, air, and fuel filters easy to service Optional bagger works well BAD: LOUD engine at high RPM Dim headlights at low engine RPM Brake is a long reach for short people Seat switch cutout too sensitive for short people Optional canopy is junk I highly recommend the 12.5 cubic foot polycarbonite dump cart. It's strong and won't dent or rust. I've put 800 pounds of field stone in mine without damage. The metal cart is less expensive, yet has sharp corners that can pull clothing or cut skin. It has also a lot more metal to dent or rust. I use a leaf blower to clean my lawn tractor. Peace. Marco
