Finished birdhouses

Hi, I made this birdhouse for my sister in Michigan. There's plenty of room on it for her to add more treasures. The last picture is a little log that was already a (fake) birdhouse. I ordered a box of 'rough' license plates. This was the roughest of the bunch, a Georgia Peach plate. It was just right for this house. The chimney is a candle holder. The yellow flower is a mandevilla. Linda

Love your houses! The license plates are such a added touch to make them personal and I bet your sister loves hers. Love the candle holder chimney!

What tools do you use to cut the plates? DH and I have our original plates from our home states just sitting around waiting for some way to display them. The houses are a neat idea. I didn't want to just put them on our walls...so they sit on a shelf in the garage :-(

I would appreciate any tips or ideas of what to do with ours.

Thank you for the kind comments from everyone. I love the totems and the plate flowers. I am getting some plates and other items to make some plate flowers. I love all the examples that I have seen on this site. They are all so awesome! Everyone has such neat ideas of how match up colors. You guys are good teachers that's how I learned by looking at your work. Thank you for helping a newbie feel right at home.

Wow this thread was from 05! I wonder how many have changes their prices drastically. I increased my prices last year a bit over my first year and then a bit more this year. If you have something no one wants it doesn't matter how low the price is. If you have something a lot want you can get a lot for it. I try to keep my prices to the dollar rather than mess with a lot of quarters and we don't sell by weight at my market. I will vary the size of a bunch or bag or whatever sometimes as need may be rather than change the price but I did already raise the price for 2011 on flower bouquets and plants. Rhubarb- 7 fat or 9 thin $3 scallions- 5/spring onions4/ baby garlic5/ bunch of scapes5 $1 herb bunch $1 (these don't sell but are free for me to grow for the most part- basil sells and I will probably do bigger bunches for more money later) flower bouquet $3 radish - about 7 I believe $1 bag of spinach or baby lettuce $3 unwashed baby bok choy $2? turnip bunch usually 4-5 for $1 but sometimes $2 carrots 7 for $2 generally broccoli quart $3 cabbage $3 usually but varies on size large cauliflower maybe $5 large leek/onion/garlic bulb $1 each (great money makers) beets/kohlrabi/small ruties $2 for about 3 beans $2 quart in season but they don't sell at all ever potatoes $2 quart can't raise price on these since they don't sell well edamame $2 pint sells surprisingly well peppers sold best at $3 quart for sweet and pint for hot cherry tom pint $2.50 doesn't sell well heirloom tomatoes sell for about 3/$2 in season or $2 a pint early season, or 75c. I can't sell the pounder size. zucs and cucs are hardly worth it for me squash .75/pound weighed and marked ahead same with melons So the container pricing worked much better for tomatoes, peppers, zucs, cucs, eggplant but it takes more time and room on the table than putting them in a big cute basket.

Thank you, so much! We live in a small town (2700) and there's nowhere but a Walmart within 30 miles to buy supplies. But we have FOUR! great thrift shops nearby in this rural area and GSs where I scavenge for pieces for my loved birdhouses which I just started making this past year. Except for photograpahy, I've never done anything artistic before, so your upbeat response is happily received! And the education and support I'm getting from all of you will surely help me branch out from here. No, I WISH I could make porcelain doors and windows, but I actually took a hammer and screw driver and carefully broke the door and window off an GS incense burner. I've found that using pottery (rather than porcelain) is always easier for this rather brutal technique. (grin) You could probably do this with a dremel too. I used a window shutter from the same piece for the window box, as my BFF wanted a burgundy door, and I didn't have one of those. The wood is manzanita, which is similar to madronna. In certain seasons I find black pieces. (I'm hoping they don't peal) The roof is local shale I pick up on the roadside here in Northern Calif. I love that Cindiloo sees palm fronds too! Daisyme- I will probably doe each one differently as I can not do anything twice..it's just mot in me. The same was about my doodling and drafting a design,then transfering it to the substrate, I change it as I go anyway, don't know why I go to the trouble to draw it on initially. I keep a carosel of colored pencils and drawing pad on my coffee table and another next to my bed to capture my ideas as they come to me. Sometimes, they stay in the pad for a long time and then I do someething with them. Slow will tell you that my studio is papered with drawings of projects that I have yet to start, much less complete. lol

Those are wonderful! So original and I may be tempted to put those inside instead of outside. I have to ask this... the NO CAT birdhouse, was that a CAUTION sign that you cut up and flipped the ON at the end of CAUTION to look like NO? How clever!

Hi, Thanks for all the compliments. The license plates can be cut with tin snips, or a jigsaw with a metal blade. They can also be bent by clamping them between two pieces of wood or metal that have strong edges. Line up the edge where you need it "cut". Score across it with an old knife or screwdriver and bend it back and forth. It should break right on the line. Hope that makes sense. You caught me, plumbelly. That sure is a caution sign, lol. My rules for the birdhouses is that the stuff will last outside and be interesting and that the roof is big enough to protect them. They're all primed and painted with exterior paint products and have little 'feet', in this case, stainless steel drawer pulls, so they won't sit in water.
Decorating Cents had a good idea for license plates. They attached them to a board, framed it and it was a magnetic bulletin board. This will work with the steel ones. Many newer ones are aluminum. If you search for 'license plate art' on Google images, you'll find lots of good ideas for them. I found a great source for license plates with very reasonable prices.
