Craftsman Lawnmower With Tecumseh Engine Surging

I have a not very old 6.75HP Craftsman lawnmower with a Tecumseh engine and its surging. I replaced the carburetor and i adjusted the governor. But it still has the same problem.

Here's the thing with new carburetors. One has to take steps to know that the fuel going into the carb is fresh and clean. That means cleaning the fuel tank best you can and replace the fuel line- or make darn sure it is clean. If you did this as you replaced the carb I commend you. If not, at least pull the bowl to have a look. While you are there, verify the float level is correct.That is if it is a bowl type carb. It won't be the first new carb that wasn't correct. If it still wants to surge when you hold the throttle steady- the carb is telling you it needs more fuel and that is why it tries to accelerate. If the rpm setting is too high for the particular carb- that will set it off too. Air leaks at either end of the intake can create a surge. The fuel cap must also be venting enough to maintain the flow. I'll drop a link for a Tecumseh service manual- that may help.

My mowers do the same thing periodically despite my making sure the gas is fresh and clean. I simply add some of the liquid gas treatment and it clears up. I use the cheap stuff you can buy at Walmart

More then likely the carbeurator those bowl designs are tricky your float may be stuck take it off and see if the pins bent also if your pumping it with a bike pump you may have a bulb issue those tecumseh bowl carbs are notorious replacing one will cost you 10 bucks with no headache

The bottom end (square plastic bowl) is removed by popping the clip off the bowl with a screwdriver. A new bowl kit (Tecumseh part# 730235B) replaces the entire bottom end. The crankcase breather is at the very top of the cylinder, under the flywheel. About the ONLY way oil can come out the air cleaner is if the engine was tipped on its side. There's a rubber tube that runs from the breather to the A/C housing. Oil can run down that breather tube and into the A/C housing if the mower is tipped on it's side. If you took the cylinder head off, you probably should REPLACE it...Tec part# 36061. I'd drain the crankcase oil and re-fill with 27 ozs. of 30HD oil. To install the bowl kit, clamp off fuel line, remove line from bowl nipple, install new kit, re-install fuel line, un-clamp line. This should restore the carb to "LIKE NEW". Tecumseh are good at that. I have one on a Murry, I spent days searching the web for solutions. I finally found that its the carburetor. You have 2 options. Remove the carb as I did and get some fine wire and clean out the tiny holes most likely one is clogged. One of mine was. After resembling it worked as new. Many people report that they cant fix them and have bought a new carb. There relatively cheap at approx $30 online.
