Florida Hill Nursery Blueberry Plants

Getting a bunch of fall flowers on both of my known Emeralds now. The unknown vareities from FHN and a Sharp Blue from FHN are getting fall flowers at exactly the same time. The leaf patterns are the same as both Emeralds and as mentioned above, fall flowers. What are the chances? Has anyone here grown Sharp Blue? If so does it send out different looking branches in the fall with flowers? I have a feeling that I have more Emeralds than I thought.

I have a few varieties that flower in the fall but none of my sweetcrisps do that.

Can't help on Sharpblue.

Right on Bam, at least it firms it up that my unknown from FHN are not sweetcrisp. Im willing to bet money that they are Emerald. The sharpblue they sent looks exactly like Emerald also. I was very carefull not to mix any up when I potted them so I know it wasnt my mistake. I dont think I will be ordering anymore plants from them. They cant even get a "make up for our mistake order" right. Unbelievable!!!

No problem Patty. I really felt that they need to know what was going on. I think that by bringing it to there attention it may avoid more problems in the future and everyone on here can have some fresh Sweetcrisp berries every spring from FHN;) I feel that they will resolve the problem. They seemed very concerned and eager to fix to straighten things out. I have 3 little Sweetcrisp berries on one of my plants right now from Just Fruits and Exotics. The calyx is exactly like Bams pics. Pretty much nonexistant. Just a fat round berry! I will post my pic in the morning as well.

The poppies did not make it. The phlox did not make it, except I, like you, have hopes yet for one of them to maybe just be dormant. 2 tree peonies....looking good potted up in 2 litre bottles. Not sure where I'm going with those, but know it will be a massive undertaking to plant them 'right', and I sure don't ever want to have to move them!. One of them did not look to be a graft, but is all one long root. Both have the tree peony foliage though. Lost one Heuchera...all the others are looking good in pots. The tricolor butterfly bush turned out to be pink. It has been planted with care quite a while and has been loaded with blooms. One Viburnum is thriving...and another is hanging on but will make it I think. The lilacs are still in their pots. I am especially thrilled about George Eastman. I can't find much on line about it, but saw somewhere that it is a weeping lilac. How cool is that? The NO ID lilac appears to have the same foliage as the Josee I ended up not being able to pass up locally at $6...so I may have 2 of them! One of the lilacs I can't read the name on the pot...might have to hunt up your checklist to verify what it might be. Hydrangea...looking good in its pot. Black Knight butterfly bush blooming it its pot. I'm still wondering just where I'm going with all this stuff. I have a lot of property, but when one has so many shrubs, it sure is a puzzle. I've make the mistake of putting a butterfly bush in a bed, and now I need to move a lot of things out since the butterfly bush exploded this season. I also had a Limelight Hydrangea explode in the same bed. It seems I never plant anything in the right place the first time. Oh...and the blueberry is living in a pot for now too. I think that's about it...That's enough, wouldn't you say. Though I lost a few things, all the other fabulous goodies more than made up for what it cost, even with shipping. Josee lilac sells on line for $20, and George Eastman for $30....so you did real good! I too did not get to all the plants promptly...there was just soooo many, especially considering what all I got at the Louisville swap just about 3 weeks earlier. Thanks again Raee! Shacute and Sam: Glad that Sam mentioned compost .. that provides soluble phosphorus for more branching on new roses. I made the same mistake of putting too much nitrogen when I first bought own-root roses .. and got only one bloom the 1st year !! Sulfate of potash is best ordered on Amazon, the ones at the store (Espoma Potash) is muriate of potash, or potassium-chloride, salt-index of 112.6 ... that's the salty stuff we use to de-ice sidewalk in zone 5a. Quick way to get the potassium & phosphorus you need is to grab a bag of Tomato-Tone NPK 4--6-6, or any organic fertilizer with big number 6 or above for the last digit (potassium). Tomato Tone is sold out fast at Walmart, it's 5 lbs. for $10. Since potassium mobility is a 3, somewhat slow, it's best to put that in the planting hole. If your hole is 18 feet by 12 feet, it's safe to use 2 cups of tomato tone, plus 1 cup gypsum (calcium sulfate) in the planting hole. Roots need both calcium and potassium, plus a bit of phosphorus to get big & solid. The EarthGro humus & compost sold cheap at Walmart for $1.29 per 40 lb. bag .. that's good for the planting hole .. will provide phosphorus for years.

I have 50 sweetcrisps....if they fall flowered you would think at least 1 of the 50 would do so.

My Emeralds fall flower and so do my Windsors and Southmoon...think that is all. Florida Hill sends out wrong bananas, figs as well as flowers. I said it before and will again....in my opinion it is not an accident.

Bought 3 HUGE 4 foot tall 'Star' BB yesterday. A small local garden center was having a half off sale so they were just $7 each. The bases were bigger than a golf ball.

It is either intentional or they are terribly disorganized.They may love to grow plants as much as anyone,but going into business and selling them is a big difference. Brady

Here's a shot of my Sharpblue today. All of my plants got haircuts recently due to an insect infestation. Only the Sharpblue is fruiting with this much abandon right now, although a few other types are trying to set flower buds.

Here's some berries I picked this morning (before they could cook...). They're pretty large and rather flat.

Thanks for the pic Steve. Good to know that sharp blue fruits in the fall. Do you have Emerald by any chance? If this is Sharpblue that I have it looks exactly like Emerald from the branches to the leafs and fall flowers. Of all the different varieties I have they all seem pretty distinguishable from one another except for my Sharp Blue and some of the rabbiteyes. I hope it is Sharpblue because I've read the fruit quality is good.

Unfortunately my blueberry collection contains three "unknowns" which I inherited from my neighbors who found them too demanding, along with the Sharpblue and some Sunshine Blues. So I might have Emerald, but I would never know!

Steve,

Emerald tends to have big very tight and I mean VERY tight fruit clusters to the point the berries are sometimes tough to pick. Sound like your unknowns?

No, that's not like any of mine. One turns flame red in the winter (the only one to change color), the other two are similar to Sharpblue in output, but not synched in terms of fruiting time (which is a good thing). Until home DNA tests for blueberries become available, I guess the mystery will continue!

My climate is so mild here that some one of the plants is nearly always in bloom, but berries are quite small or never develop when it gets too chilly for pollinators to come around.

Steve,

We can't rule out any cultivar as in your zone the plants are going to act differently due to lack of chill hours. You need the chill for proper fruit set but hey you can grow them there and they fruit, that is all that matters.
