Have you used recycled glass mulch.
Comments (14)Eric, Yes, I am very familiar with bottle trees. And, yes, I have one in my south side whimsy passage garden, bottles stuck on branch stubs on a large cedar tree. Maro, you should know that this isolated garden in my yard was landscaped to be entirely whimsical. Sorry, I prefer not to post pictures of my creations. But, my little 'play' area sold our house the day it was listed. I prefer to call it high class whimsy done with beautiful wood shapes and topiaries. The realtor told me that the couple looking at the property spent about 30 minutes studying all my whimsy and decided that they had to have it all. And so they shall. To be authentic, only blue bottles should be used for bottle trees. The voodoo/Gullah believe that the color blue keeps away the 'haints'. Bottle trees are displayed in the front yard and house doors, shutters are also painted blue. It must work because I have not seen any spirits floating about. Due to the constant heavy pine needle drop we have here I have never used glass mulch. I remember some interesting ideas Mich posted. Open areas with little leaf litter invite playing with glass. After all, you do not need to mulch everything in your yard with it....See Moretile top patio table

Comments (3)I was going to try the wire basket idea - I have a couple from an old refrigerator that stopped working that I can use. I will have to look at the dollar store for wire waste baskets, never saw those. I have found some wire hanging basket frames, but the tiny ones start at $3 here, and the larger ones run even more. Seems like the plants will outgrow them pretty quickly, so I definitely don't want to spend much money on them. Also, I need to try to stay somewhat uniform and not huge and unsightly; I live in a subdivision with HOA rules. As long as the garden doesn't become an eyesore, I don't think my neighbors will complain, especially since I share a lot, and they know that I donate all extras to our local food panty. People feel pretty bad making a fuss when you are sharing fresh produce with people who are having trouble feeding their families in this economy and rarely have fresh produce. They kinda feel like they're taking fresh food out of the mouths of children. My one neighbor directly behind has no interest in my produce, hasn't accepted a single tomato and thinks people using the food pantry should get jobs, and she is a complainer - she turned someone in for having a patio table & chairs & grill in their driveway out front, rather than in the back (this was before the yard was sodded and it was a mud pit, early in the development with few houses finished). I have a brand new neighbor on the garden side, and I don't know them well, so I don't know how they will react. I'm hoping that being friendly, and sharing will make them think positively about it. The garden and composters were already in place when they bought the lot, so it won't be a surprise. The builder never complained to me about it, so I doubt potential buyers ever sited my garden as a reason they were not buying. The clear bottles I think will be fairly unnoticed from a distance - won't show much above the sides of the bed, short and clear. If I start with an assortment of various sized wire contraptions, that may attract some extra unwanted attention. Is blood meal a pest deterrent? I just thought it was a fertilizer. Thanks for the input. Sherri...See MoreUsing recycled wooden doors for fence decor
Comments (13)Thank you Jinx. The neighbors behind us are not tidy people. One neighbor has large amounts of rakes, lawn mowing equipment and a junk collection of scrap metal, windows and metal drums. Next to him the guy bought the house 4 years back supposedly to flip it. It has become an eyesore for those of us who have to look at it from our bedroom windows. The yard had an in ground pool at one time and now it’s crushed concrete with weeds and junk in it. There are some nice yards but unfortunately they aren’t behind mine. So you see, being in a culdesac we back up to several yards. Using the doors as decorations takes the focus off the ugliness behind us. There are bushes taller than our doors on one side so I don’t offend anyone. I do appreciate the pictures of other door uses. I may add some plants to the existing doors....See MoreRelated Professionals
