birdcage feeder idea -see pix

I saw this advertised online, and thought what a great way to display dry seed for the birds. I put it on my 'to do and to find' list, then viola! I found one at a yard sale for a quarter. I have the perfect place in the yard, with tall trees as the back drop.

Here is my question. The wiring is spaced 1 1/2" inches apart. With the exception of the annoying blue jay, will the finches or any other small bird fit thru that measurement in order to get to the seed, or am I wasting my time?

I know it can be used over a plant in a planter. I have heard that numerous times, but I want to do something different. Any other ideas?

I bought a similar feeder for my Mom for Mother's Day. She, and her birds love it! The only birds that can't use it, so far, are the blue jays. She especially likes that the squirrels are unable to get at the seed. The smaller birds fit inside the cage easily and some of the larger ones can fit their heads inside to reach the seed. Her's is definitly not a waste of time!

I too bought that feeder and I HATE it...it does keep larger birds out and squirrels..but it lets the seed in the tube get wet every single time it rains. I hate mine..took it down in fact, and mounted it decoratively in the house in a corner with feather birds on the perch. If you want to get it, consider a baffle over the top to help keep the seed dry a bit. It fills from the top and leaks like crazy and it is a bear to clean out because it gets packed in right at the very top already.

Wow, what lucky finds! Those birdcage stands cost a small fortune at antique stores! That's a really neat idea. I have one with just a flower basket hanging in it, but I like your idea better. That's a good way to get some height in the garden without having to cement anything into the ground. The glories look very happy!

Fish emulsion -- where to get it?

An easy way to fertilize your bananas with fish emulsion is to use a miracle grow bottle feeder system. All you have to is empty the contents that came in the feeder bottle and replace it with 1/2 water 1/2 fish emulsion. The cap on the bottles can easily be remove used a DULL table knife. I have run the numbers and this will give a mix of about 5ml per 1 litre of water. Now you can fertilize large areas without using a watering can! Awesome eh!

Tamelask, the end can be screwed off and a long bottle brush for the main body, then I picked up some of those little tiny brushes for the flowers. Thanks for the kind words from both of you!! We did enjoy coming up with the engineering on this and making it. I don't have any written instructions, but basically, it's a couple of pieces of PVC, threaded end caps, a T in the middle. I ordered the little yellow flowers off line from Perky Pet. Then a half gallon Smirnoff bottle, you will also use the baffle in the opening and the lid. Drill out the lid and press it into the Tee, then clean the bottle well and there is your nectar reservoir. The drilling things out is the pain, PVC is very slick so make sure you have a vice handy to hold onto the pipe. I also used a PVC paint that dries into a very hard shell. Good luck and post up yours should you decide to make one!! You may even have some better ideas to incorporate in!!

I think I will try a finch sock, some sort of fabric to hold the seed so they can get to it. I see your point with the rain and how the seeds get wet. I hate that as I have other open feeders, so I don't leave seed out during raining season. It is a pain though!
