I wanted to butt in and say MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A HAPPY NEW YEAR TO EVERYONE. Each and everyone one of you have helped me keep the bulk of the plants out of the Plant Graveyard. Hugs to ya, and if your traveling be safe.

Be Good, no lumps of coal so you get plenty of plants!!!

I am going to start hiding mine from the husband, thanks to all of you, I have a collection. Yep and the husband keeps rolling his eyes. HO HO HO!!!

Pistilo, we all wish each other a very Merry Christmas, a happy holiday and a prosperous and safe New Year.

Might I just steal a little of your message here for something most dear to me passed along by my husband.

My husband notes as a retired Fire Captain we are continually being shaken with news about terrible consequences of fires in the home. We have just had recently one that took the life of a young mother and two children. The simple exclusion of having a smoke alarm in the vicinity of where the fire started may have been directly the cause of the tragedy.

I urge readers to check their smoke alarms, make sure they have fresh batteries if that is the type and please, keep lit candles off the Christmas Tree and if so used, please, do not leave young children in the area of the tree for any time alone when lights are on.

I'm currently reading "Game of Thrones", and really enjoying it. Terriks, I know exactly what you mean about the "porn" in the first episode--we got the 1st season on DVD (no HBO at our house...) and I was sort of appalled. However I liked the overall story so we stuck with it. Interestingly the later episodes did not have nearly as much--perhaps they felt like they needed to reel in a certain kind of viewer at the beginning. Eew! I also enjoy mysteries. Recently I enjoyed the "Lincoln Lawyer" series of books by Michael Connelly. There are five that follow that character. Some of my favorite "special" books I've read from over the past year: "City of Thieves" a great coming of age novel by David Benioff set during the siege of Leningrad. "The Whistling Season" by Ivan Doig. I LOVED this book, but I have to confess some of my book club buds were just okay with it, since it it not super plot-driven. If you like books about interesting people you just want to spend time with, and beautifully crafted language, this is great. Funny and sweet and wistful, narrated by a man looking back at a special year in his childhood in rural Montana. Especially good to read if you are a teacher. "Unbroken" by Laura Hillenbrandt. Pretty harrowing non-fiction, but really fascinating, too. "Any Bitter Thing" by Monica Wood. Our book club read this and every person loved it. I've also recommend it to several people, and they all loved it as well. It can be a little hard to find unless you order online, and none of us can figure why it didn't become a huge bestseller. It has some mystery elements to it, but it's more than that. Happy reading to you all, and thanks for the suggstions

I really liked the pantry next to the fridge, once I saw it on paper. It makes sense, to have all the prep ingredients together. Blondie said she really wanted a coffee/toast area for her DH and it also makes a great snack area. The freezer and microwave are close together, with a nice counter in between. I also believe this is her second oven, so it's going to be used more for holiday baking, maybe frozen pizzas, that type of thing. It really is a lovely kitchen. You do such a nice job with the floor plans. Thanks again for doing all that so quickly :)

When I was in my 20's, single and working in an office, a co-worker picked up the book (Oscar Lewis' La Vida)I was currently reading, looked at the price, and asked in a loud voice "You paid $-- for THAT?) She had announced earlier that she and her husband had just purchased an expensive new car with all the bells and whistles. Differenct strokes. . . When my boys were young I would read aloud to them during dinner. Great for the diet! I would stop in the middle of a exciting passage, and leave the book on the table while I cleaned up the kitchen. It was fun to see which boy got to the book first to take up to his room and finish that chapter. I've never worried that my boys, now 38 and 40, would not be readers. They're both still single and have very active lives, and I was pleased that on one weekend day each called me from the city they happened to be visiting, one to tell me he had met an author of a book we both loved, and the other to announce he had found an old book I had been looking for. Reading aloud has so many benefits. Years ago my late brother, who was 15 years older than I enjoyed reading each other passages from Robert Paul Smith's Where Did You Go? Out. What Did You Do? Nothing. For those that may not remember this lovely little book there are passages about how a child spends his idle time, including the wonders of the empty lot nextdoor. This book sparked conversations about how my brother and I each looked at our childhood experiences from different angles, and without a doubt, brought us much closer together. I certainly will treasure those times. I see I've strayed from the original topic of being insulted about reading, to more speaking in defense of reading. Sorry about that, but I guess defense of an action naturally comes after an insult.

I want to say Happy New Yer to you all too. It's been a long time since I came here - but I still have many of my houseplants, most of which I learned about here first:
Different sorts of Aspidistras;
4 tall different Sansevierias;
2 Prayer Plants;
Jewel Orchid;
2 Phaelenopses;
Plain and variegated Hoya bella;
Hearts Entangled;
Plain and variegated Jade Plant;
Variegated Fatsia japonica.
After I first came on Garden Web, I set my heart on finding those, and I succeeded, and they are the plants I still have indoors.
With global warming, I have been able to leave many more outside - things have changed since I first set foot here :)
Many plants have left in the arms of friends, or have faded away with the changing seasons. But I always remember the first day I came here, and the joy my plants brought me.

I'll chime in too. Happy New Year.... I have gotten so much knowledge from all of you out there in cyber space. I just love lurking around and posting from time to time and seeing old posters(like marguerite!)

We recently remodeled our kitchen. I became a bit addicted to the kitchen forum. But visiting the houseplant forum feels like visiting old friends. Peace be to all of us and our plants!
