Fairy Garden and frog planter

I promised my GD a fairy garden. I got up Saturday morning and loaded all the parts for making one. After many GS and thrift store visits I had just the right pieces. I used an old #3 wash tub that has seen it's better days, but packed with character with all of it's dents and bangs. I lugged potting soil and plants and all my supplies and headed for her house for a planting day. Prior to going I got my river and walking path assembled. Being she is 6 yrears old I was afraid that during the watering process she might have the glass pieces and the rocks flying everywhere! So I took an old stiff plastic placemat, like you buy at $ Tree. cut in the appropriate shape and glued, (with GEII silicone) all the stones in place! Worked wonderfully.

SHE LOVED IT!!!!!!

A few posts back I posted pics of 2 frog planters I re-painted. My GD requested hers be re-painted too. Only she wanted hers to look like a princess!!! Boy I had to put my thinking cap on.....cause I sure didn't want to disappoint her! This is what I came up with.

She was one HAPPY little girl!

I painted the little bird house. The fairy house in the background sat at the thrift store for several months with a 2.50 price tag on it, finally one day they had an everything .50 sale day and I raced to get the fairy house!

Oh wow....can I be your GD for a weekend and you make me one?!?!?!?!?! This is great! I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the frog planter. The pink with that green is just terrific. The washtub makes a fabulous setting for the fairy garden...and you're right all the pieces are perfect for this, such good finds.

WOW...what an awesome Grandma you are! LOVE the fairy garden and the Princess Frog is just too cute! I am sure your granddaughter feels like she's a princess with such a great fairy garden of her own!

I have something like that. The first year I planted irish moss in it - and shaped the soil and plants so the back was completed (i.e. mounded/rounded it so the frog looked more natural) and put it in my 'wet corner' garden where one might expect to see a frog. It was hard to keep the soil moist enough so in subsequent years I've left it unplanted and positioned it where the back is hidden and you just see this rather grotesque frog staring up a path from under overhanging plants. A bit of garden whimsy that kids love...:- )

Thanks all! It was a BEAUTIFUL weekend here in Ohio - just perfect for the garden fair! I did fabulous! The garden signs didn't sell as well as I had hoped, but did sell several. I brought home about 30 planters out of 101 and have them listed on Craigslist and Facebook trying to sell them this week. Having the fair on Father's Day sure hampered the Sunday traffic - it was a slow day. Saturday was swarming tho. It usually is the weekend before Father's Day, so it was different this year. I think that is why I have so many containers left. I will probably also do a farmer's mkt. to move the leftovers - I do that every year. Looking forward to a long weekend/mini vacation and hope to get in some R&R!

Hi all! Happy first day of Spring - especially for we northerners!!! Record snowfalls, record days below zero, that's what we had here in CT. I'm anxious about my saucer garden, but still optimistic. I took the last pix yesterday - the last day of winter. I can't yet get any closer than that pix shows but from what I can see, it's only the Blue Star Creeper that looks iffy to me. The three pix below are from Jan 21, Feb 14, and Mar 19, 2014. I still have a frozen stream along the path. In anticipation of success for this saucer experiment, let me add a few notes and tips that I forgot to include above. On my second try I used a lot of local dirt over the base of potting soil. Seems happier - potting soil not earthy enough? This sled is made of aluminum. I don't know about plastic - might its chemicals leach into the dirt over time? Maybe a year or two would be okay? I don't know - anybody else? Since last summer I water (drizzle) with rain water only, and only when needed, concentrating on the drier perimeter, letting it soak to the center. All that said, I'll probably finish this thread with one more pix in early summer - with critters. As for the rest of my time in here - I'm still learning from everyone else - with very little expertise. Onward and upward for us all - flowers included! -- K

Being against the house is part of why we've decided to do this. We need to see what damage is already done to the wall. The back (red) layer against the wall is going to go away, giving us about six inches between the two. We're going to put a coat of waterproofing on the wall, too. That should take care of any water worries. A layer of gravel will be put down between the two and be sprayed periodically with weed/grass killer. The 'new' back layer (green) is going to be built up using concrete cinder blocks. The gray ones with the holes in them, turned so the holes are up and down, not side to side, except one. The two pipes (blue) are runoff from the ac and cooler. The plan is to extend them just a few inches so that they'll drip inside one of the cinder blocks. That'll keep the runoff away from the house, and protect the pipes, too. Bulbs in fall, others after last frost. What about mulch and fertalizer? I'm not sure yet what plants we're going to have, we'll see come the new year when spring plants go out. But what about soil? My dad said something about bringing in soil from the cemetary (don't ask) but I'm not sure it's a good idea. He did that in his yard and ended up with mushrooms and weeds.

Bet your GD was grinnin' ear-to-ear with a 'princess smile!' I can see that she would love this! You did good, oldcrafty, & I think that pink tiara is a hoot on that lip-sticked froggy! LOL! Jeanne S.

Ohhh how wonderful. That is one lucky little girl to have such a fantastic, creative grandma putting some magic in her life. The Princess Frog is adorable, and just perfect to complete the setting.

This gave me a big smile, and one of those warm fuzzy feelings as it was made with so much love.

This is something my GF came up with 1 year for little girls for a Pepperdine boutique. Take a headband & yard or 2 of tulle or net & sew it on the headband, add a sprig of greenery or some fake flowers & your 6 yr old little princess will have a ton of fun. GF had to go home & make 50 more as the boutique lasted over the weekend she ended up taking some more orders too. Could use buttons or beads across top of headband. Simple & quick & just running around with it flying in the back makes little ones feel so special. She ran out of headbands so made some with coated wire & covered with the tulle she sewed a comb on the front so it would attach to the hair. Make short enough so don't drag on the floor & trip the child. Might have to add a bit of tulle to the frog's tiara (she might insist!) Jan

What a wonderful idea to use the plastic placemats as a base for your "water" and "path!" I might have to steal that idea. I love your fairy garden. Everything is so adorable and nicely put together. I even like how the tub is dented and kind of crushed ... just the way a good fairy would like it! And that frog ... that is just too cute for words! I just LOVE it. Your GD is going to have the most awesome memories of time with her grandma. Lucky girl!

I love the idea of gluing the stones to a backing to keep it in place. they go everywere when I water too. Just last night I was wondering what I could do with some tile backer mesh that I pulled the tiles off. Seems obvious now!

No I didn't. My GD lives 65 miles away. So I just packed up all my supples and filled it up after I got on the patio. Then planted and put my pieces in. I took a piece of newspaer and drew around the edge of the tub to use as a pattern and played with which pieces I was gonna use and the arrangement before I left home. That way the assembly went fatser.
