My pimped out potting bench

So I've been adding things to my old potting bench. It was boring before and now it's filling up :) I still need something over on the upper right hand side. Looking around the garage for something but haven't come up with just the right thing yet. Also a few other yard pics.

What a great save! I don't know what your garage looks like...the siding...but I think this potting bench would look great painted like your "moon shutter"...those rich greens with a bit of yellow. Your moon shutter would even look great near this piece! I know you LOVE butterflies... it would be nice to tie them in somehow...maybe some netting for backing (not hurricane worthy, I know).. or a butterfly house look cool with the shutter & bench. Oh, anyway, I love your save! Have fun with it ... and will be lookin' forward to pics! Jeanne S.

Potting benches that actually get used take a lot oif abuse; water, soil, fertilizers. If it is "bare" wood now, I vote for sanding it down and giving it a healthy coat of boiled linseed oil for moisture protection. It has to e redone after a time, but it is not like have to scrape and sand for poly or paint. I wanted a potting ench in the worst way, too...a whole potting SHED as a matter of fact, lol! But I cleaned out my garage, then brought a woddshop workbench out of the asement that I was planning to get rid of. I don;t know what I was thinking! Mine has a big double slab of plywood for a top, and two homemade cabinets to go underneath with a cupboard and a drawer in each. Then there is space between the cabinets for soil and amendments. I LOVE mine! I use it all the time, it is nice and big, is the perfect height, and is up against a wall, on which I can hang a handbrush and dustpan, shelving, etc. Have fun! One word of caution if you decide to go the route of linseed oil. Clean your brush extra thoroughly afterwards and dry it completely, outside, before storing. Same with any rags you use. Without being properly washed and dried, rags for linseed oil can spontaneously combust. It can really bring out the natural beauty of your wood, though, and is non-toxic.

Dee, I like your idea of putting all the small tools in a five gallon bucket and bringing it with you. I think I am going to try my version of that with a two wheeler and a small beach umbrella. I like bringing shade with me and having a two wheeler to move something if I need it. I also have a way of using the 5 gallon bucket as a work surface while sitting on a riding seat. I had fun putting the whole thing together too. Had lots of places to put things like my water bottle, etc. I did that two summers ago and I forget what happened that I didn't last year. I could move into one of those sheds tomorrow too Dee. Might make a nice get away, right in the backyard. Bring out a cooler and a comfortable chair, a few gardening magazines...make a day of it. :-) Linda, the umbrella is a nice idea when you have to use a space that is too sunny and it helps when it rains to keep things dry if you haven't got any cover. I also made a decision to try using the garage for one season and clear out an area that would be the same size as a small shed and see how it works before I commit to having a shed. sooey, you sound pretty organized to me! pm2

Ohhhh, I still love this old potting bench of yours...I remember those doors! AWESOME! Do you have any old garden hand tools that you could add to it? I see the old hinges...something rusty in your garage to add?

And your brick flower bed path/patio? is very lovely! Love the patina/moss ...your gardens lookin' GREAT! TFS! Jeanne S.

Trade you a house in Phoenix, close to desert, guaranteed over 100 degrees every day till about Halloween...LOL.

What an oasis you have! Just beautiful. Especially the brick path.

Purplemoon, you forgot the lovely sand/dust storm you had tonight! Hope you were spared! I loved all of the pics. That is a great potting bench & even adds to the look of the house. The green of the doors & "tools" sign really finish it off. I love the greenery & flowers around house. TFS Jan

Ah yes...I did forget that whopper of a duststorm yesterday evening. Mother Nature decided to junk up Phoenix with
50-60 mph winds and a MILE high wall of dust. Nothing like
this monster in years here. It was pretty awesome to see the news photos.

OMG I hope you ducked and covered!!!

Thanks for the nice comments everyone. I can't take credit for the cobblestone patio or most of the landscaping right around the house. That was all in place when we bought the house last year. The pots and planters and window boxes are my contribution though :)

Love your bench and all its decorations. Your garden is gorgeous and so are those totems! And I just absolutely love impatiens! I hope mine fill out as beautifully has yours.

Karen, that dust storm looks pretty scary! I can't imagine the noise it must make.

The potting bench is coming along very nicely!! I'm sure it will be ever evolving as treasures come & go.

The photos of the dust storm are so unreal looking!! I just can't imagine! I'm going to have to show the hubby those. We talk about retiring to the Southwest when we're older....

I'm sooooo going to copy that idea of using a strawberry pot for impatiens, but I'll still probably kill them. I always do.

I, too, love your rustic potting bench and the doors behind it, Rafor. I also like your brick patio, and the strawberry pot full of impatiens is awesome.

Wow, Purplemoon, that dust storm is terrifying to look at! It must have been like a tsunami of sand!
