My houseplant setup (pic included)

Hello

Do you guys think that this is a good setup for my eucalyptus (and my other plants?) The leaves on the top of my eucalyptus are dying for some reason (even though there's adequate moisture). My ruby cryptanthus, which are supposed to love bright light, aren't getting there nice red color back, and the leaves on my coleus feel really mushy and keep falling off, even though they have adequate moisture. Can somebody please tell me what I'm doing wrong??

Gizmo had to be "posed" in the garden, he didn't like being in there very much, the only thing he does that I don't much like is he will try to potty on the rocks. I have a big rock on the outside of one of my beds that he has christened several times over, lol!!!! I am not sure which Philo that is, it was a HomeDepot buy, you know how they like to label their plants:) I have some new hostas I am really proud of, so I will put them in here, Olive Branch, Dance With Me, Spilt Milk and stained glass:) I do love my hostas. thank you for the nice compliments Toni. Feel free to post some pictures of your plants as well, I love seeing others:)

Well... it's 2 yrs old, started in the compost pile & spent the first summer outside in the veg garden. I dug it up in the fall, since it had grown rather tall & looked happy. I was too tender-hearted to condemn it to death by frost. Currently 2' tall (+ that 2" new growth I mentioned) & living in a 1 gallon plastic pot of garden soil/compost. It has a little over an inch of thin bark coming on at the base of the trunk. I've been using 1/8 strength 3:1:2 fertilizer for about a month, usually about every week or 10 days. None of the new leaves since fertilizer have had crispy tips - I think they're from last summer when I let it get a little too dry - it really hasn't been a leaf-dropper at all. At the equinox, I'm going up everybody's doses to 1/4 strength for a while. Everyone just got a pot flush yesterday (no food) since the weather was so nice - my S-facing glass-roof deck was out of the N wind & "warm" w/ the glass magnifying the sun. All the plants are getting southern exposure at this point & the 'Cado is right by the window. Anyhoo - it will get a root prune & repot into fast mix in June. Maybe a move to a 2 gal pot; we'll see what those roots are doing... then it can eat as much as it wants. I may very well defoliate the trunk at that point. I think it will enjoy spending the summer outdoors. I'm after a taller plant, so when I lop, it's just a few cm off the top. The last cut (only the 2nd lopping) brought 2 buds: the slacker & the over-achiever. If the slacker gets it's @ss in gear, that'll be enough balance for now & I'll let those shoots grow the better part of a foot or so before I chop them. If not, I'll take another few cm off the top & hope for more balanced budding. Thanks Josh for sharing your experience on this thread - I think Avocado is something most people try, simply because it's around. You're proving that it can actually be a viable & attractive houseplant, given one is willing to put in some initial work. GB

TJ, Unless my eyes are fooling me, it almost looks like you have two different ferns in that pot. The one closest to the edge looks like Cretan Brake 'Rowerii' (or some other cultivar of Pteris cretica). Just taking a stab at the one further in, 'Rivertoniana' (also Pteris Cretica). Hope this helps lead you in the right direction even if I am not right on the IDs!

I took a look at the images you provided. I do not see anything wrong with your seedlings. If they are going mushy the photos do not show it. When I plant my seeds I try to use sterilized soil/sand. I bake it for over an hour at 225 F. I also like to keep the seeds/soil in a container with an airtight lid (transparent 6" wide by 3" deep take-out containers are good). I like to keep my soil just slightly humid. It should not be wet to the touch. Every few days I check to make sure the soil has not dried out. If it has I spray a few spritzes of water to moisten the surface. The soil is in a sealed container so the moisture will eventually fill more or less evenly. I keep my seedlings under a daylight fluorescent bulb. I think it is 20 watts or so. I use 4 bulbs and have the seedlings about 10-12" from the bulb. I leave them in the sealed container for at least 6 months, sometimes a year. When they are large enough I take them out and plant them into SMALL pots. Something Like an old styrofoam egg container is good. Poke holes in the bottom of each well so it will not hold water. You can cut off the lid and use it as a base. It makes for a sturdier way to pick up the set of 12 wells. Allow the soil to dry out between watering. At this stage you can move the plants to a bright window. Be careful to introduce the plants to strong sunlight (U.V.) gradually or the will burn (usually they go red when they burn). That's how I do it.

A 4 ft shoplight that is closer to the plants would be more appropriate. If the bulbs are fluorescent, they're not what's causing the top leaves to die. It's hard to tell what you might be doing wrong w/o a good understanding of all the cultural factors you're providing that might be affecting the plants. IOW - insufficient data.

Each pot is differt same applies to trays and such name em out by number of pot 1 is XXX tray 1 has XXX pot 2 has XXX etc. left to right line em up then someone can/may help you with some mix and match ideas.
Let XXX = name of plant

First your going to need two 4'shop lights. Lowe's sells them for $10 apiece. The two sets of bulbs. One warn set and a cool light set. use one warm and one cool in each fixture. The fixture should be just a few inches from the top of the plants. Costs about $35.

I see a sun light advantage from the window smaller pots/ trays should be the closest to the window * right side of shelf take advantage of the sun lite days and remove as many pot shadows as you can small trays left to smaller pot then bigger ones sit far left (as you stand in front of shelfing)

the tallest pot will determin the closeness to the light still in moving shelf upward ( extra lighting I can't say as I tilt/move/shift my lighting on a weekley or as needed basis)longer chains and tie wrapes does this trick for me

Post your pics as you move/shift and name things I'll be glad to re post them as seen abouve as long as you dont lock your photo bucket album

I'm sure tapla will help you alot as soon as he can he looks kind of busy at the moment
