Mason Jar Birdfeeder

I posted this on trash to treasure,so I'll go ahead and post it on garden junk,too! My DH has been making these,we bought one at a yard sale and we copied it. Really simple to make,you'll need a bit to drill though glass and ceramic,some large eye screws and rubber washers,and some chain. And important.....you'll need the little biddie-chicken feeder that screws on a mason jar like a lid. They're about $2 here at our feed store for plastic ones,but you can order galvanized ones online pretty cheap.

Can the smell be dishwashing detergent?? If the jars are washed and initially rinsed in a mild bleach solution they should be rinsed well and allowed to air dry. Lids can have an odor, but its usually due to the silicone ruber seal or its primer coatings. As people get older, their sense of smell and tastes seems to change. I have problems with smelling many things now, and think I have BO even if I shower daily with good soaps, and wear clean clothes. I go around the house and try to find the offensive odor and have not yet found it. My sinuses are toast.. I do know that when I dry dill weed and place in a canning jar, remove the air with a FoodSaver canning jar adapter, that its smell is always there when I open the jar and use some dill.

Ken, I've seen the lids with fruit designs by Bernardin and have several boxes. I've found the gingham and salsa on a regular basis and usually spend a fortune thinking they'll discontinue them. I haven't found the Disney Characters; I bought several last year but down to my last set. I like to use those for the grandkids and a couple of adults who buy season passes to Disney. Nor have I found the peach, strawberry or grape like I described. One year I found some with a hat and shovel imprinted on a white lid with a plain white ring. I do check ebay off and on; there weren't any the last time I checked. I've also found the sellers want far more than I'm willing to pay and I've willingly paid the prices at Golda's Kitchen. I found some at Amazon but the shipping charges were twice the cost of the product! I don't want them THAT bad! LOL I don't care for the printed stickers; just my idiosyncracy. What I will do, is print out the jar content and for pie fillings, include baking instructions on a business card decorated according to the jar content. Using a single hole puncher, punch a hole into the corner and tie it around the ring with some ribbon or raffia. That seems to dress up the plain jars I want to give away.

I love glass jars -- either canning jars or other types -- for pantry storage. It's easy to wash, and although it's not 100% bug-proof, it's bug-resistant. In my opinion, it's the most practical item for pantry storage. Details about how I use glass storage: - I have lots of old Mason jars and Ball jars in all sizes. The quarts and half-gallons are most useful. I use only clear glass for my pantry. I use my blue glass for bathroom storage (q-tips, etc.). - I am building up a collection of homemade chalkboard tags. On one side I write the name (say, Pinto Beans) in white paint pen. When I put beans into the jar, I write the expiration date on the back side in chalk (so it can be changed later). If it's something like pancake mix, I write 1 cup mix to 1 cup milk (because all mixes aren't identical). I keep the tags in a little basket, and I reuse them. If right now I don't have pancake mix, I'll put the tag away in the basket 'til I do have it again. - I like glass containers because glass "matches" other glass. If you want to add a couple more plastic containers years from now, you'll probably have a hard time matching the size /color. In contrast, you can add a different glass container, and it just looks like a collection.

Glass jars using a glass lid that was clamped in place: That type of jar will have a pair of deep indentations on its side and under the top rim where the bail hooked in place. The seal was a flat, large diameter rubber washer. If the toggle-bail is gone, those indents will identify this type of canning jar. If those indents are missing, then this jar was intended for some other use besides canning, maybe a jar having a lid with a knob. Canning jars with screw-on metal lids were sealed with a flat rubber gasket. The inside top of the lid was usually lined with glazing to keep the contents from contacting the lid metal. The sealing gasket may have had a tab that protruded beyond the lid. Its purpose was to help unseal the can at opening. One pulled on the tab to pull the seal ring from under the lid. This relieved the vacuum and made it easy to unscrew the lid. Both of these types were superseded by a jar having coarse threads at the top and used a thin metal scew-on ring with that held a relatively flat lid. This lid was slightly domed and had a thin elastomer seal bonded to it. This lid had a superior feature in that it indicated if the jar was properly sealed. During canning, after tightening the ring, the dome would snap down with a 'pop' sound as the contents cooled and drew a vacuum. The canner could test a jar for seal quality by pressing the center of the lid. If a good vacuum existed, the lid would already be snapped down and taut; If sealing had failed, the lid would be domed upward and could be pressed down. That can would not be stored and its contents used shortly. If desired, the caned goods could be stored without rings, and the rings removed for use on the next batch. However, those rings were inexpensive and most canners left the rings in place as added assurance that a lid was not lifted. After storage, the canner could check his/her stored stock for seal integrity. To open this jar, remove the ring and pry the lid off; Discard the lid, the ring is reusable.

Kudzukween, you come up with the neatest ideas. Hey, wonder how a terra cota saucer would work for the top. And maybe spray the bottom to look like rust? I like the rustic look as you can tell. I'll have to check our local Feed & Fuel place to see if they carry the feeder parts. Do you think we could avoid having to drill the glass if we just used GE Silicone II on it? Might need the hole in the top to have a way to attach a chain for hanging it though. Just thinking out loud here--why am I so reluctant to try drilling glass? LOL

Me too, Luvs-I am 'chicken' to drill glass.
I have a bunch of the metal feeders and a case
of pint Mayo jars left from when we did 'people
feeders' with them. we recommended candy corn, peanuts
and M&Ms. Since they were 'chicken feeders', I painted
roosters on the jars, and usually demonstrated with
candy corn.

Thanks ya'll. DH says hey that looks just like the one I made,lol, I said it IS yours :) Hey check out what I just noticed, there is a little "twin" cucumber right behind the jar just above the hand rail. Two cucumbers growing together! I bet the terra cotta saucer would look great,especially if you can find the galvanized feeders. I really wanted those,but our feed store only sells plastic,and DH didnt order galvanized ones. That's ok, we found lots of plates at GW to match the colored plastic. I haven't drilled them MYSELF :) but I've watched DH,and it looked like it goes through the plates like butter. He used a glass and ceramic bit. Harder to go through the jar. He said not to run it on high speed,it cuts better at slow speed. I'll still leave that up to him,but at least I know what to do:) Those would be great gifts for candy corn,how cute,Nona! I think you'd have to drill the jar,to get the chain on to hang it,lol!

I love your feeder. Funny thing happened yesterday. I was out in the garage jungle unpacking...still after two years and came across an old galvanized feeder I got somewhere and thought about the people feeder nonacook mentioned. However, it's rusted a bit and really don't want to paint it. Your feeder is just the perfect project!
I'm thinking since you have the plastic feeder, it might be easy to find a plastic jar and plate. Those would be easy to drill through for those of us who are nervous about drilling glass. Just a thought.

I painted mine, when we did craft shows.
I sprayed them with Walmart Blue, and specked them with white--like enamel ware. Also did red and brown ones that
way.

Oh thanks Nona!! It never even occurred to me to paint them! Making them looked like enamal ware would be perfect. I love the birdfeeders DH makes, I just never liked the bright plastics, but I can spray with that Fusion stuff and spatter them. I think the mayonnaise we buy comes in a plastic round jar,although half the time we get the one in the oval shaped plastic jar! Hmm, I could paint spatter the whole thing. Thanks for all the inspiration,ya'll! There's all kinds of ways to make these different:)

You've inspired me again...first way back when with your coooool Mason jar, outdoor, hanging candle holders...and now your Mason jar birdfeeders! I think of you every time I see a Mason jar! I'm definitely going to make a few!!!! Thanks for being my inspiration!!!! Kirk
