Plastic bags for refrigerator apple storage?

Should apples be placed in plastic bags for long-term refrigerator storage? Should bags have holes in them as do commercial apple bags? I am hoping someone out there has experience in this area.

According to a former gradeschool teacher of mine who now runs a U-Pick, yes bags, no holes.

I would throw a cup of water in the bag myself, that's what I do in my crisper bins when they're full.
I haven't used bags because my bins work so well.

Don't know. But I had good success with storing apples in fridge in large, deep steam trays with lids. They were unwaxed apples and lasted a few months.

Trouble with bags is the apples may get bruised from jostling. (at least in my overpacked fridge.)

Jim: The Japanese need to be advised of the advantages of the common Wal-Mart/Safeway ziploc sandwich bag. They may not be made of rice paper, but they work. I have used the Japanese bags, and still have a small supply of them. The ones I have are two-layer, and the outer layer is removed at a late stage of ripening to color up the apple precisely to Japanese standards. The Japanese bags are much more difficult to install than ziplocs because they have short, built-in wire twist ties, they are less durable than ziplocs, and they are much (much!) more expensive. A properly prepared ziploc bag, (cut off the lower corners; remove the plastic above the zipstrip), will provide the same insect protection as the Japanese bags. Apples left in the ziplocs when subsequently stored in refrigeration are also protected from shriveling, since the bags hold in humidity. Apples grown in ziplocs are perfect enough for me, and actually seem to grow larger in the bags. Since I will be installing about 1,500 of them this season, maybe more, I like the price of a couple of cents per bag. Plus, since you can stop spraying for curculio, codling moth, and apple maggot as soon as you install the bags, you might call them "organic". Pre Sprouting Seeds in plastic bags

While sprouting daylily seeds recently, I came upon a method that works really well. I mix my hydrogen peroxide/distilled water in a container, then after the seeds have germinated, I soak a round cotton pad [not the balls, the flat cotton pads] in the solution, squeeze most of the water out, then put the seeds in half of it, fold the other half over and put back in the plastic baggie. This works just great! Also, for storing seeds in the fridge, a friend told me about this idea. Cut the bottom out of a cereal box, about 3-4" high, and you have a nice storage container to line the seed baggies up instead of jumbling them up in a bigger plastic bag. The folded paper design I posted earlier, I use only for temporary storage or for mailing seeds. If you are having trouble folding it, it is usually because you do not turn it over as directed in picture #3. For long time storage I use the plastic air tight containers used for diabetic test strip storage. They are a little smaller than the old 35MM film shipping cases. My Walmart has been accommodating when I bring my bags, and most cashiers are very willing to put as much stuff in as few bags as possible. They are even selling reusable bags as well. If you have a Trader Joe's around you, they have a raffle if you buy one of their reusable bags, or bring bags to reuse. I'm not sure how long it will last, but you get a ticket, and a chance to win another reuseable bag with $25 worth of groceries inside it! Pretty cool idea. I get a $0.02 discount per bag I use at my local store. Dee, I had to laugh about your story about your husband wanting bags...my mom called me one day all excited..."you won't believe what I've done...I bought those reuseable bags at the grocery store, and I love them", then at Christmas she and my aunt kept telling me the "green things" they had done this holiday season. I was very proud of them, but the best was the baffled look on my cousins faces, like why are they telling you that! (I'm active in my church's global warming group, which my mom and aunt are always hearing about)

The U-Pick lady suggested a large flat cooking sheet to slide the bag in and out on.

Bruising can be an issue in the crisper bin for the ones on the bottom and the ones on the top when it's really packed and they hit the lip when the drawer opens.
But at that point I'm thinking bigger and just waiting for time to press them, sauce them or get them made into pie filling.
By the time I'm going for long term storage I'm down to a single layer in the bottom of a crisper.

I think the reason for the holes is so apples don't dehydrate in a fridge with defrost but don't end up rotting from too much moisture around them as apples release it. It may be a respiration issue also, but apples shrivel very quickly (depending on variety) in a modern fridge. Bags with holes are used for a very good reason.

If you have a veg. bin in your fridge, I believe it's designed to deal with the same issue if it's one of the more expensive models
