Post pics of unusual or creative containers!

As a volunteer at our county extension office, one of the things I love to do is a presentation about creative container gardening. This is given (free of charge of course!) to all kinds of groups all year long. I first do a show/talk on the basics & then the fun begins......!

To make it interesting, I have a slide show of pics from different web sites showing plant combinations & unusual containers. But I would love to add pics of even MORE unique/unusual/creative containers! This is often the best part of the entire class as people see that they CAN think & execute outside of the box (pot)!

If you don't mind my using your photos, please post your best shots of really different containers. Anything goes from tame to wild! For privacy, I won't give credit to individuals, but I will give this site as a source of some of my pics. Actually, GardenWeb is one of the sites I urge the attendees to visit for ideas!

Are you a Master Gardener? I am and have thought that this web site would be a great reference to use in a presentation on "garden junk". Do you get a large crowd at your presentations - do you do your presentations at Lawn and Garden Shows or just in the community? I'll be interested to see what shows up for you.

Here are the most unusual containers I have planted...a helmet, toaster, and dish drainer. There are others in my album if you need more.

I've posted this pic before, but I'd say that the little portulacaria afra (in Turface fines only) in the Quercus alba (white oak) acorn cap qualifies as at least a LITTLE unusual. ;o) Al

I used black deer netting between my deck rails. I grew my tomatoes in pots on the ground and tied the tomatoes to stakes, bird-netting and the deck, itself. If you look between the rails, on the left side, you might see the deer netting. This is a moon flower and morning glory vine. Here's another shot. This vine is growing from a pot on the ground, climbing up the deer netting. This photo shows so many plants, but you can see the tomatoes with stakes and there is deer netting between the deck rails. I tied tomato branches directly to the deck. I used heavy metal stakes which had green plastic coating. Not terribly creative, but it worked and didn't look too ugly. Jane

I use a lot of 5 gallon plastic buckets that I pick up in the alleys when I find them and drill a bunch of 1/2" holes in the bottom. In a pinch I'll buy them at Menards. They're compact, deep, and can support a variety of big plants and herbs. I also use milk crates by lining them with 1/4" plywood (and some are old 1x pine wood cut to size) that I coat with polyurethane. The plywood rises 4" above the milk crates making the entire container about 1 sq ft. and 16" deep. The wood is cut precisely so that it fits together perfectly in the milk crate and then I use a coarse mulch on the bottom to keep the dirt from falling out. I like the milk crates because they're square and they fit snug along the edges of the roof wasting no space. I also have a bunch of 22" cedar planters for big things and for the tomatoes I found these big utility tubs on sale at Menards for $3 each and drilled holes in the bottom. There are no catch trays and everything has drain holes. The excess water just drains away on the rubber roof and down the downspouts. The wildflower planters are big (8'x2.5'x12"deep) and I made them by building a frame of 2X4s for the base and 2x2s for the sides. Then I cover the frame with a skin of 1/4" plywood. The frame deals with all the stress of the dirt so no need for thicker plywood. The entire box is primed inside and out and then coated with a Porch and Floor oil based paint I got from Home Depot which is extremely good and covers in one coat. That's about it. I started on this 3 years ago and add more containers every year. A couple of days ago one of my neighbors set out ten 5 gallon buckets in the alley for me to pick up so I have a good start on next year's expansion. BTW: To protect the rubber roof, wherever there is a plant cluster I lay another layer of rubber material and place the planters on a piece of wood so the summer heat cause them to melt into the roof creating a leak.

I have 'L.S. Downsized' as well as 'Blue Haired Lady' (originally sold to me as 'Old Coot'). I love BHL, but LSD is a mini that you can easily overlook. If I have time I'll post a pic of BHL. The leaves are like the ears of a Lop eared rabbit. They're satiny and a cool shade of blue. I'm still looking for 'Old Coot', to keep my BHL company (poor thing). Yes Janice I can start a thread on secret gardens or grottos...that is if I ever get mine made. Right now its just a pic in my mind. Donna ;o)

Shysue: Great pics! Wonderful containers! This is exactly the sort of thing I am looking for!

Pammiejoe: Yes, I am a MG. This talk has become one of my favorites to give 'cause I have props & do demos & we have a hands-on project. I MAKE the audience participate so it isn't just me giving a lecture to a bunch of blank faces. We have a good time & everyone gets to have a say or ask questions if they want to. I've done this at Libraries, at garden clubs, nursing homes, Adult Education programs, church groups... anyone who calls into the office & wants this subject.

At the end of the program I have a slide that has listed some of my favorite web-sites to visit (along w/ the Extension one!) & I urge them to visit here & tool around.

A couple slides that have gotten great reactions have been a HUGE fern planted in a papasan chair, a dresser w/ all the drawers pulled out & planted and tires that have been painted to look like mosiacs. These pics give people courage to have some FUN in their gardening!

My motto is that "if it pleases YOU & makes YOU happy, then you ARE a succesful gardener!"

This isn't the best picture of it, but the large planter on the front of my side porch is a galvanized tub used years (and years) ago by A&P to ship bananas.

My dad gave it to me a long time ago...and would probably turn over in his grave if he knew I was using it for a planter! Planting and decorations change with the seasons.
