Back home with a completed 'borrowed' project!

Well It's been awhile since I posted. My Mom and 92yr. grandma came from Florida for a visit...We then went to Ohio to visit the rest of the family. I had sent mom a picture of the coke birdhouse that someone posted here because she just happened to have several coke cases! So she brought them with her. We took them to Ohio where my dear brothers made a birdhouse from them. It came out great. I still have to drill holes and attach the perches and then put it on a pole in the yard.

Oh that looks great! Glad you have people in your family that help you create. I never put perches on my birdhouses. The conservation department says native birds don't need them. Their feet and legs are strong and they can grab onto the houses (maybe not if it is a slick material). Here, the sparrows (which aren't native to N.A.) will take over all the houses if they have perches.

Thanks guys! I have enjoyed my adult beverage and am about to go sit on the couch with a book or a movie. Right now the only two things I have planned for sure to plant are a vitex and rose of sharon that gatormomx2 gave me. This is mostly a butterfly garden with full sun western exposure. It currently has some roses, blue porterweed, firebush, plumbago, ruellia, crepe myrtles, yarrow, night blooming jasmine, pentas and some other stuff I am sure I have forgotten. I like to have lots of color out there even if it freezes back in the winter. It is great to sit on the porch and watch the birds and butterflies. Even last weekend, when there were really no flowers left, I sat out there and saw, finches, cardinals and even a tufted titmouse. WW, My Cascades, AKA Area 51, last year. It doesn't have many trees in the planting area to worry about, but it would be a huge undertaking to try and make it look 'manicured'...if I wanted to. I don't anyway. I just dig out the really rough soil there and amend it with compost, manure, peat moss...whatever. I leave the moss, some grass and the rocky, bumpy surface. Beautiful, naturalistic. No cottage garden for me. It is exactly how I want it and I think it will look great when done. The rustic look is not for everyone, but I really like it. No grass to mow, weeding done with Round Up. When it matures a little I will post another thread on the area. Jon

The path is gorgeous -- as are all your wonderful projects! And thanks for letting us know how you are doing after surgery. Keep us posted. It's wonderful how the body will heal after major surgery and positive thoughts. I'm sure happy with the new knee I got a year ago. And Bob, my mulch guy, is happy not having to do the watering although he was a sweet heart and did the best he could when he had to do it :-)

Melsouth, the floor wasn't difficult, it was just tedious, and the smell was pretty bad. If you notice in the pic, DH had a fan ventilating to the outside. It took a few days to cure. It chipped in a few spots when heavy objects were dropped, but DH says he can patch it up easily. We opted not to tile or put any sort of flooring down for two reasons. One was to save money as we have several other huge projects (new main bath) we would rather spend money on. Second is we live in a flood prone town. We have been here 7 years and did not flood with storms Irene or Sandy, however we didn't want to take a chance. Once our drain the the sewer backed up and we were able to easily clean up. The floor is pitched towards the furnace area where are sump pump is. We opted for a black ceiling after I started taking note of how many people simply paint their ceilings black. DH found the black ceiling tiles at HD and thought that would be easier. Since he was installing it, I wanted to do what was easiest for him. I'm very pleased with how it turned out. He also put a full bath in down there. Our main 2nd floor bathroom had a major leak and needs to be completely redone. Since we are mostly DIYers, it will likely take time and now we have a 2nd full bath in the house. It's not quite complete yet.

I agree with Cookiemon5....perches only allow predator birds access. But I do love the look of the house!!!So cute.

Thanks for all the comments! I will follow your advice and leave the perches off. I know the size of the hole determines what type of bird uses it. I am not sure how big my brothers made them. Kudzu if I had some more crates I'd send them to you.

What a clever idea! I have 2 old wooden crates and never thought of bird houses. Good idea about them being perch-less too !
It will sure make a nice home for all the Mom & "Pop" birdies!

I remember back when... when you told Craftjanjan (aka Janet) that you would tell your Mom about the Coke birdhouse...and then you followed through and had one made!!! (I always say I'm going to do it...and then it goes on my list!!!!) Way to go! This is beautiful! You'll have to post a picture once you put it in your yard! I love it! I love it! I love it!
