BB Lady Bugs Update

I have posted before my BB Lady Bugs, well we are having a Shrimp Festival the second Saturday in August and I have been collecting more BB's to try and make some Junkin Cash. I have been cutting the BB's in half and up to now it has worked well....Yesterday My JH (Junk Hunk) and DS worked to cut them in half for me........I had found a couple really heavy ones and they proved to be Beasts, The centers were filled with either fiberglass or Resin, Wore the teeth clean off of the Saw Blades!!!!!!!!! So just a tip if you try to cut a bowling ball in half use light weight balls 10lbs or less.

My GD Loves my Lady Bugs and she has to hug them every time she is here, then she wants to carry them and after replacing the Antenna and Eyes over and over I decided to make one she could play with...found a Globe at Sally Alley and this is what she got....Just cut it in half as I do the Bowling Balls, then paint and accent with Antenna and Eyes, It is quite a bit larger than the BBs

We have spent so much time telling her she cant pick them up she won't pick this one up!!!! Go figure...

I made two and gave one to a little girl visiting her G-ma from North Dakota, She said she just wanted to make her mommy smile when she got back because she didn't get to go to the beach....Well the BB was to heavy for the flying so the globe worked out just fine.

Yikes! I didn't realize that bowling balls could even be cut in half! You and your DH are more adventurous than I would be. lol! But your globe ladybug sure turned out cute. I wonder if these large ladybugs scare away the aphids in the garden? Kind of like the Godzillas of the garden bug world. he-he

Oh Luna, Possible but it is not an easy chore we use a Sawzall, tape around the middle, sit it on a coffee can use a skill saw to score the outside then set it in a hole in the ground and take the sawzall to it. the more we do the better we get of course, the cuts were really jagged to start with now they are getting better, Yesterday my son held them in his hands while my JH sawed, I love both of them but I wouldn't hold the ball....LOL As for Aphids..I don't worry too much about them as we have an abundance of traned lizards...LOL My garden friends....they pretty much keep my insect population to a minimum I only have issues with caterpillars and spider mites.....Here is a pic of my favorite lizard.....{{gwi:160162}}From Garden Lizard

Hi everyone .. thanks for the compliments. It's a bb lady bug. I used kilz first then about 6 coats of the red/orange paint. Then cut circles out of the wide painter's tape that's not too tacky. Then tapped on black with a stencil brush (2 coats). Then, black caulked the antennas in the thumb hole. I made sure the two finger holes were covered over with black paint so they'd look like eyes. I didn't fill them with caulk. A wood macrame bead (painted black) was stuck in the top of the antennas. It was easy but time consuming because of the coats of paint. Meant alot to read the comments. I have a big perennial garden. The bugs really add to it. I'm just finishing up my last bumble bee. That's it for this year. On to a tin man! Janice

Update on the LadyBugs: Having caused their removal earlier today,by tipping the plant upside down,and tapping on it,the LB's departed,and all seemed well. This evening,I checked on them,and the only one with a few LB's on it,was the plant I took the photo of. This plant is still in its original 4" plastic pot,which is inside of a 4"clay pot for stability. I had the thought to check if any of the LB's were hiding inbetween the two pots. What a surprise, there were at least 40 to 50 LB's there,and they were not exactly happy to have been discovered. Seems they figured out there is safty in numbers,and those that were in the other plants earlier,now gatherd into this one plant. Clever thinkers,these LB's. This time I took them about 30 feet away,and dumped them in a pile of leaves,hoping they make a new home there. More like an apartment house for them,instead of a cabin. Good thing these bugs are so small,because they seem smarter than me. Bob ;^)

I just got an order ready to go after getting my catalog this week. I'm supposed to be downsizing, but I couldn't resist. Dan Hansen is really taking daylilies in lots of new directions. With the economy so bad and nothing else worth investing in, I'm buying daylilies. None of the 2009 intros bedazzled me, but I bought a couple of intros from 2007 and 2008, plus one of the bargain basement specials. Gee, I hope this helped. LOL Debra

Finally got my box out today, or should I give my hubby credit as he actually posted it for me today. Things are crazy as my oldest is getting married this Saturday and I volunteered to do a few projects here at home to help out. Why, why, why????? I made cookies for the cookie table and chocolate covered pretzels for the candy table, (a tradition in the area where they are getting married). Then I agreed to make little paper flowers that glue around the top of a toothpick to fancy them up. Again, why, why, why?????? The toothpicks still need to be finished and then a ton of ironing, and then the packing, and then the gardens need to have a little tlc. All before we leave Thursday morning. My husband and I did treat outselves to some dance lessons so we could be prepared. I have never really cared to dance and part of it was we really didn't know what to do on the dance floor. Can't say as we do now but at least we can fake it. Here is the DC for the box 03080660000088961649. Of course, it got hot the past few days and I wish I had gotten it mailed sooner. I am hoping for the best for the plants I sent. I did send extra so the chances would be better. Hope Amy likes it all.

I always held, and turned the BB (Resting on a
concrete block) while Bill cut with the saws-all.
We cut our first one about 2003, for lady bugs.
Smart to cut the plastic globes!!!

I love my DH but I will leave the power tools to the boys. The globe I split is actually cardboard, I guess I should have said that...LOL It is rally heavy cardboard though I wouldn't leave it outdoors, it probably wouldn't last 1 season. I am looking for a metal one like I had when I was a kid. My Sis lives in OH and I would love to mail one to her for her yard.

I would never have thought it would have been that-LOL
But come to think if it, you would only get ONE complete half cut from a plastic globe. The other side would have a large hole.

Wow!! HOpe after all that work you make some money!! The globe bug is so cute, hope your GD takes to it soon! That is such a cute lizard our's are brown & get about a foot long. Does he get big? Love that board he is on too, stamped, makes it look so antiquey!! Jan

I have never made a lady bug, but OH-H-H how adorable they look! The lizzard and I both need an extented trip to a spa. We have the same skin texture.

No he doesn't get big about 8 inches for a good healthy one, but they turn from brown to tan to green depending on the surface. the board is a ladder I found At a YS for 2 bucks..I was gonna paint it but I really like it for the same reason it looks old. (I don't think it is) I want tofill it up but not sure what to put on it.{{gwi:160164}}
