need some advice about dogwood

Hi:

I was hoping to get some help

My dogwood which I'm trying to grow indoors, was doing well for a while; but recently leaves has gotten a whitish hue, and started to get brown spots. I keep it under lights and the air is reasonably humidified. Am I over-watering it, or is something else going on?

Looks like mites.

Don't these require winter dormancy..?

Temperate trees/shrubs need a cold rest, so your plan to keep the tree indoors is not a good one and will undoubtedly end in disappointment. Photo-period (day length) is the primary trigger for dormancy, so the poor condition of the foliage could well be linked to the tree being genetically programmed to shed leaves as days shorten, though there could be other contributing cultural factors.

If your plant is in good vitality, you should put it outdoors until leaves fall, protecting it from temps below 25*. An unheated garage is a good place to over-winter, or bury the container against the north foundation of a building. Toss a little snow on the plant from time to time to keep the soil damp, but not wet. If you keep it in the garage, the plant will wake a few weeks before dogwoods in the landscape wake, and then you can shuttle it in and out as temperatures allow.

howdy reed, i'm a little ways from austin. & i've only been doing this 3 years. but figs, jujube's, persimmons, asian pears, & european pears should thrive there with almost zero care. just be sure to get fireblight resistant pears, anything from womack nursery will work, just google them i dont have experience with peaches, plums, etc; but when i google "tamu peaches" texas a&m says they can be grown if i'm willing to follow a spraying routine, & if i'm not willing to spray not to bother. apples also need spraying, & your soil has to be free of cotton root rot, which many areas in the cotton south have if you use the search function at the top of the board & look for "mountainman" & "scraper" you'll read from some fig & pear experts in austin

Need some advice about paint

The recommendation to mix the two cans together is a good one. Even the new cans (when using more than one gal), it is recommended to mix them all to make sure the shade is even in all. Paint can go bad if it is subjected to extreme temp changes or the can is rusted. I have used paint from a clean, never opened can after 4 years. it was separated completely and it took a mixer to get it blended again but it was good and looked exactly as it did when new. The new can I had made to match was the same formula but it was slightly off so mixing the 2 gave me even color and the walls look wonderful. CT

If these were mine I would take them out of their containers. Knock all the dirt off. Next I would go to my hose and lightly rinse them off to get them clean. Put them in a cool shady place to dry for a day or two. When dry plant them in a gritty mix, if you only have a "cactus mix" make sure you add half perlite. Lastly, don't put them in the scorching sun because they may get burned. Introduce them slowly :)
