We had a really bad rain/wind/hail, thunder and lightening storm go through earlier this evening. It was pouring so hard you could barely see out the windows. I hate that stuff. Backyard got trashed and a huge tree branch fell right on the little table I have back there - what are the odds of that? Table is now trashed - talk about your "Garden Junk."

So glad to see you Zooter. I have missed you. I have to look hard to see what is left here after the bad freeze the other night. A lot really got hurt, we will see what is tough, and what is not. In the meantime, I will take some pictures of DH's new project, and I will post them tomorrow. DH and I went to the dump today. We found a great GO CART! LOL, he about had a heart attack when he saw it. It is a good thing I had nothing in the truck yet, there had to be enough room for the go cart. I asked if we could fix it for the DGKs, and he said "NO!" He said "Mine, mine, mine!" LOL, we will let him have it. Zooter, I have a lot of birdhouses hanging in the shade house, over the hot tub. Hello... I am long overdue to start creating a garden workspace and organizing all my garden junk. I thought I would resurrect this old post and see if anyone had any more to add to it. I could start a new thread if that is a better idea? So....I have too much junk scattered all over the place..the basement, the garage, seeds in my bedroom...lol. I am sure you get the picture and perhaps there is someone else out there who has the same problem. I just don't know where to start, it is a little overwhelming. What gives me the most trouble? Large containers 22" and where to put them for the winter. Large bags of potting soil or soil amendments....storing and having easy access to them. POTS! Having tools handy when out in the garden without making 10 trips to the garage for something I forgot, yet not dragging everything around with me. Leftover materials from past projects...a pile of broken pavers, a small pile each of stonedust and pea gravel. The COMPOST BINS! I need to get them out of sight. We have a small yard. I was hoping to create an area where I had everything garden related so it is not in a number of different places. My problem is the only area available is on the side of my garage but the main entrance to the backyard from the front is there and you would have to pass through my 'workarea' to get to it. I really love a pretty organized, neat area anyway....I am just not coming up with creative ideas for what I have to work with to make it that way. If someone has had similar issues that they have resolved successfully, I would love to hear about how you did it. Started some tomatoes and some native perennials that like to cold stratify. Not much else. Expecting a bad summer and continued watering restrictions so avoiding creating a lot of new landscaping this year. Seems like it won't be a great idea. I did get some trees removed. The former owners of this house had planted 4 red oaks (shumards and buckleyiis) a silver maple and a bald cypress all within probably a 50 square foot area behind the house. The maple had gotten huge and was really interfering with the oaks so we had the maple and the bald cypress (which was very close to the house) taken out. So that's a bummer, less shade this summer but better long term for all the trees and the maple was dropping limbs all over the place. No room back there for more trees though so no new ones. However they also planted a large number of sweet gums which one after the other either succumbed to drought and/or borers or just struggled to survive I have a few that are in places that work so I water those and keep them happy, the rest I am slowly replacing or pulling after they die. So I had two of them removed that were each 4 feet from the driveway and the one on the house side was probably 10 feet from the house. Why don't people think? :-) Anyway, since I have lots of room, I did get two new shade trees to replace them though both are going alongside the driveway further out and not on the house side. I'm afraid to buy anything else in the red oak family for fear of oak wilt. Most of my good shade trees now are red oaks or bald cypress So I got a really nice cedar elm and a somewhat smaller but still good sized, Mexican white oak. They are due to be planted next week, so I hope that goes well. Those two will be close to the house and I figure worst case I can water them with grey water even if nothing else is available. I wish I could have gotten them in a little earlier, but they are container grown in root growers, so hopefully they won't have a ton of transplant shock and will settle in and grow some roots before it gets too hot. Several of my planting areas are under a huge oak tree that drops millions of acorns every year and I'm constantly pulling the sprouts. Haven't found a thickness of mulch/leaves yet that will prevent this, aside from just burying the plants. I do try to keep a bit of space around something like a knockout rose so I can reach in to pull sprouts, which is necessary to do often, weekly, so nothing becomes an infestation or too well-rooted to come out. You may want to use an organic smother layer (that can be left in place to decompose) wherever there's space. Just don't let stuff drop ripe seeds and you'll stay ahead of the curve, except those darn tree sprouts. IME, tree sprouts are the most constant and prolific weed of most gardens, and pulling them often is just a requirement if you don't want your beds to quickly turn into a young forest. A tree doesn't need to be invasive or 'trash' to bless you with a million sprouts.

craftylady, sorry to hear of your calamity. We have had rain off and on all day here in MO, but no storms in my area anyway. We do have more than our share of tornadoes and I hate storms, also. I had to chuckle at the title of your thread,though, cause sometimes garden junk CAN get just a little too junky. Last year, high winds took down our outside canopy, but I salvaged the iron work and made a nice fence with arch to divide a section of my yard. We got another one this year and I'm holding my breath everytime a breeze blows.

what a scary storm. I'm so sorry it damaged your yard and turned treasure to trash in some cases. Garden Junk indeed, Mother Nature just didn't understand the concept well.

okay maybe i can only see it on my computer and maybe it is just a reflection on the camera. In that video it looks like there is a shadow of something walking around that looks like a small boy...can anyone else see it on theirs. That is the oddest thing i have ever seen...i found it really odd that noone mentioned it.

Thats weird! I didn't notice it at first but went back and looked it is a whiteish figure going across, goose bumps

yeah it is really strange i went completely out of it a couple times and reclicked on it thinking i had lost my mind and then had dh to come look and he saw it to.

I think that is a reflection on the window glass, as I believe I can see the screen in video also. Don't want to ruin the fun, though.

So sorry about your table. I see something white moving,is it a reflection? Looked and sounded like a bad storm.

I just happened to go back and read the new posts to my msg here - now I'm LMAO - white moving thing, creepy thing moving - ya'll are too funny. Yes that is a reflection off the window screen. Didn't even think to explain that before, too funny!!!
