Really BIG perennial suggestions?
Comments (20)Thanks all for your suggestions! They are great. So now I'm leaning towards the Bog Sage, Salvia uliginosa, hoping that my average moisture soil will help it behave. I think it might be nice between my two clumps of Heliopsis. And I like its open, airy feel. But a Joe Pye weed is tempting, I'll have to see what cultivars are available. I have Cup plant around back and love it! It is a big guy, great coarse texture and those cups formed by the sessile leaves are very nice. As are the flowers. Thanks again......See Morebig, bad and bodacious: ee spiders and ufs
Comments (22)To answer your question about staking: the only spider/ UF here which has needed staking in the past has been LIME PEEL. It hasn't begun blooming yet this season. It gets very tall and is in full sun. However, we've been in drought for years and this year are getting plenty of rain. I'll be anxious to see if the scapes are stronger this year. This AM, several which had multiple blooms yesterday had scapes that were bent over from the weight of the water ( we had a very strong storm yesterday and it was too wet to livehead last night.) on spent blooms plus there were new blooms. Once the old gooey blooms came off, the scapes perked up! Some of the older spiders/ UFs ( or those which are grown in too much shade) may need staking, or at least I hear people comment to that effect....See MoreBIG Spider Home???
Comments (7)its that time of year.. where misty mornings.. simply make them apparent ... NEVER FORGET.. no matter how much you might hate them.. they are BENEFICIAL ... i never understood why peeps dont 'see' the artwork of such ... i will give you a break if you hate them.. and its your front porch.. but hey!! .. these are out in the garden.. enjoy them.. and quit sticking your head in the bushes.. your neighbors are starting to wonder about you .. lol ... there is absolutely no impact on the plant ... if you go out in the evening.. sneak up.. with a blade of grass.. and stimulate a far edge.. you might get it to come out to see if dinner is in the web ... after which you pee yourself.. and run away screaming like an 8 year old girl.. and after a few steps.. realize it was as small as rhiz suggested ... its not a pretty sight.. when you are supposed to be a manly man.. lol ... ken...See MoreBeautiful big spider!!
Comments (26)I just have to say this. I have Arachnophobia. When I was in college my Entomology professor plopped a container of preserved insects in front of me. Guess what was right on the top of the pile. Yep a spider. Personally I didn't care if I embarrassed myself. I told him that there was no way I would ever reach into that jar bare handed. I asked for a pair of tweezer or forceps. After searching around he found something for me to use. Everyone thought it was funny.... Not so when I'm paralyzed with fear. My professor teased me occasionally about this but it was good natured. Don't get me wrong I don't kill spiders. Their importance as predators is unmatched (that's my opinion of course). If they are hanging over my head or get in my face I scoot them away. I've been reading everyone's posts here and can actually feel the hair on my arms stand up. Yikes....See Morepetrushka (7b)
