My new old bike/planter

I got this old bike for $5 at a sale. It has a wire basket and just screamed FLOWERS!!!! So I got a cocoa liner to fit the basket ($6!? I really must figure out a way to make paper/peat liners myself) filled it with potting soil and some of my favortie annuals. It looked much better before it fell over. :(

I have since anchored the handle bar and pedal to the fence with cable ties.

I plan to put up another unusual planter tomorrow. :D

JoAnn, Picture please! It sounds great.
I too am wondering how to make liners. I thought old fern roots might work since I have a lot of them, but they seem to be pieces that are too fat and at the same time don't cover enough area. They last for ever though, may still try.

Craftsman style house goes with my cottage style of gardening. One of the two blue spruce in the pictures, the one on the right, came down in a big rain and windstorm early this spring. So there is a lot more light in the front. That side is now in full sun. As to lots of land, I don't have it. I have a typical suburban size lot. What makes it all work here as far as everything I have planted is that the yard is all multilevel. Harder to deal with but more things can be squeeezed in. It would never all work if it was just level. The parking lot you can see across the street is to a 16 acre park and beach so its really very nice here in the summer. Its for our City residents but never crowded just afew people arounhd weekdays and not that much more on weekends. Next to it immediately adjoining so you can walk from one into the other is a large county nature preserve, this time all wooded. Also with shoreline accress. I remember going fishing there with my dad when I was a young child. Well, I went with him. He fished, I played around.

OK, lisa. I think since marge said it's a second garage at her temporary apartment, then it clutter out of control. Marge. How much do you really use the portable sewing machine you have now? If you pull it out for mending a couple of times a year, then I don't think the White machine table is a good idea. Better left in a closet. If you use it frequently, then you know using the machine table won't be a comfortable sewing spot. You were managing just fine before someone put that out. I would post it on freecycle and let someone who would really appreciate the machine give it a new home. White is a good brand and I love those older models. The mechanics in them just don't wear out. The last thing you want to do after you get the house remodeled is to fill it up with stuff you won't use. Do you really want it in your nice, new space? ordph. This is what I have and they grow nice here, Michelia Figo, banana shrub, evergreen, grows slow enuf to not be a nucence for trimming. Mabey you already have one. They aren't expensive either. Sweet olive, which I think you already have. Then there is Sweet Viburnum, which is also evergreen, sweet white flowers in spring. It would like your winters. Elephant ears, might die in winter tho, but comes back nice. I also have Mexican hydrangea, I don't know the proper name for it, it would love your weather, but it spreads, so you would have to contain it, VERY fragrant. Pink flowers, you would not believe how this plant spreads. All the above plants like part shade, acidic soil, zone 8 and above for winter weather, except mabey the sweet olive, some people can grow them in zone 7.

Absolutely great looking! I love your bike planter! If my old bike with the flat tires in the cellar deteriorates further, or if I do, I may have such a decoration in my gardens too in the future!

Awesome! I have a bike too and its waiting for a tire. I need to find an old used one!!! One tire is a modern mountain bike tire and it just does not fit in with the bike. The bike is a 50'ish girls bike. I just painted it a pretty blue and I already planted the basket with succulents. I can't wait to get it up!

cool....have you tried using newspaper to line a basket. Maybe use kraft paper for the first layer that would be seen and then newspaper....Maybe poke a few holes for drainage thru...now I have not tried this, have been thinking about it.

Nice!! Why wouldn't old nylon or aluminum screening work as a liner? It's fine enough so wouldn' lose much dirt yet water can drain. seems like it would work!! Jan

Oh! the craft paper and newspaper is a great idea! I have not planted mine yet this summer. must get some new flowers soon!

bloomin...Your bike is so cute! Luv it! And your yard looks wonderful! Is that a garden shed back there?

I've bought that liner "on the roll" at nurseries cheaper than buying the packaged circle ones. But I also use "burlap"...very inexpensive at the fabric store ... and also newspapers in the bottom before adding potting soil. Just another idea you may want to try... TFS the pics! Jeanne S.

Burlap! I hadn't thought of that. I've been looking thru GW and see some people have used shopping bags to line their baskets. I think burlap might give me the natural look I prefer. Maybe I'll try both.
Thanks for the compliments on the yard. Can't even see any of my gardens in that pic. lol. It is very green right now tho. Yesterday I spent 10 minutes doing a video tour of my gardens, then found out I had the digital camera set to photo. I had been talking to the non-working camera the whole time. Silly me. :P
The little yellow and pink house with the pieces of picket fence leaning against it was my daughters playhouse when she was little. It's too small for an adult, but I keep my garden junk in it over winter. The bigger shed behind it is housing a swimming pool and garden tools.
I fantasize about a cute little potting shed...should have gotten the bigger playhouse. ;)
