Yard sailing. Its a sickness

I got tired gardening on Saturday and went out late morning to see if there were any yardsales nearby. 11:30 is close to the end for many yard sellers who tend to end at noon because if they start at 8 the early birds arrive at 7. So I wasn't really expecting any thing. Sooo I went to 3 sales and spent $12.

The framed prints are for dd. I love the bottles. And the big heavy platters for totem bases. And the red glass. And the little plates: will they stay whole for flowers or be broken up for mosaic?

This last thing, a seat with a hinged cover full of knitting needles is behind the car so dh won't see it. I snuck it into the house through the front door and straight up to the upstairs front porch where he will think its been there forever. I'm really not sure why I bought it for $3, but a friend of mine who is teaching a knitting workshop came by and I gave her some needles because she has to plan on some of them "disappearing".

I gotta start making things! But I've got so much gardening to do here at home and also for my garden club. In a week or 2...

So much fum for $12.

Kathy, you got some really neat things at your yard sales. I like the little hinged stool with the knitting needles. Thank you for sharing.

Jeanne, I so glad you like that one the best. I LOVE it! and I was thinking maybe I'm just odd and no one else will like it. I've had that center for years and never found the right plate for it until just the other day at the SA. Its a Pier I plate. I did find some spoons. Still need more but I'll keep looking. It is real red glass,Laura, not painted. Real red glass is often referred to as "ruby red" which I think means that it is red through and through. I lucked out and got some for 1/2 price ($1 to $2 each). Also I've been using some red glass cups as the middle of a few pf's, some plain smaller and fancy larger cups, that I also got very good deals on cuz they had no saucers. When I bought the smaller plates for $1 each, I could have gotten the dinner plates for $2 ea. I really wish I had now, but at the time $1 was my limit per piece. That was before I started to sell them. In my quest for spoons yesterday, I got some red glass bowls that I really can't figure out how to use but at 50 cents each I can break them up for mosaic if nothing else. So I bought all 8 lol. They are not the right shape for floweers, kind of deep with a large diameter flat bottom and nearly straight-up sides. And an abstract not very pretty pattern shaped on the outside of the sides. Hello Vanessa, Sorry for the delay as I dont check in all the time here. Winds. My area is pretty tame. flat to maybe 12mph with some winds around 25. I tried checking b4 I purchased it for infomation on wind loads but couldnt find any. I know in the spring a north or west wind from storms will scream right over the pond so I will be watching carefully. The shade is pretty tough and does stretch with turn buckles for adjusting tension. I know my pole mounts cant come out of the ground and Im hoping the 5/8" x 3" eye bolts in the house frame should old. When ever the next storm hits it Ill post. Temps. Happy to report that it helped alot on keeping the pond cool in the summer. Aug was hot and my power bill proved it. Days avg in the mid 90s and 80 for the lows. Morning temps of the pond water were 75'- 78' and late afternoon 78' to 82' for the max. It does get sun in the early am and late afternoon so the get some direct sun. The water lillies tho had only 2" leaves in the shade side while the more exposed ones grew to around 5" Very happy I installed it.

I absolutely love this one. Like mentioned, maybe other serratas have showier indivdiual bloom heads, but its a profuse overall bloomer on terminal and lots of side buds. It's nice and compact, great habit. It has this great spring coloring where the tips and outside edges of the leaves are blushed this beautiful black/purple. If you like serrates you have to get this one.

Great garden tour/childbirth analogy, Mel. So true, and what memories it brings back! Our garden has been on tours several years, and this year I get to recruit tour hosts. I will be honest with them and give them the good with the bad. There is much more good. One issue is a closing time for the garden. Gardeners love to talk, and some will hang around until midnight if you let them, even with posted hours. At all times, you need at least 2 adults hosting. Be prepared for children who must use your bathroom. Very frail or overweight people sometimes insist they can move a barrier and walk across a pond gangplank. Overly helpful gardeners will insist on deadheading your daylilies that you are hybridyzing. People will argue that coins in water never hurt a fish (aaarg!) Guests will bring children who will feel free to cross over to your neighbors' play equipment. Last year, we built a waterfall from a tree into our pond, and people not only stuck their heads under it, but some drank it! I had to point out that it was recirculated pond water--ewwww! You'll endure comments like "wow, you must have lots of time on your hands or a full time gardener" No...I just don't park in front of the tv every night...then I do some quick lessons on composting and soaker hoses versus mowing and weeding. In addition to labeling unusual plants, you might want to print up a list of plants and sources. I used to do quite a bit of trading on the gardenweb exchange forum, so my yard is full of plants not available (and not hardy) in this area. I potted up seedlings and divisions ahead of time to give away, and had a trade list available to selectively hand out. some of the big hits were heirloom plants and the very new. We had a photo album showing the progress of the yard in the 4 years we've been here, because it looks very established. A complaint many tourists had was some yards looked like they were planted last week. Had to laugh...some were! The homeowners got insecure about what they had and tried to "buy" an instant garden, and it showed. I would suggest you don't put in anything new in the month before the tour. Have potted plants ready to move in empty spaces. Neighborhood boys searching for a baseball flattened some of my perennials the day before tour started last year, and I had to fill in with large planters set into the flower bed, and no one knew the difference there. Our tourists appreciated the igloo full of iced tea. One igloo was enough for the 250+ people we had each day. Every year, I get a few thank you cards in the mail in the weeks afterwards, and once, a lady brought me a new plant I didn't have as a thank you gift. All in all, it is tremendous fun if you are prepared for it. Make a plan to finish last minute work 2 days before so you can go into it well-rested. I still run into people at various places who remember me and my garden, because I took the time to talk to them. It really gives you a boost! Cindi

I hear ya, Kathy! I went to get my haircut on Saturday and while waiting for my DH to clean up from working in the garage, I checked out rummage sales in the neighborhood. Being crippled really limits me ... I can't go up stairs or walk any great distance ... so I found one that I could check out. All I bought was a orange & cobalt blue glass fish for a totem topper. I have an orange vase and some cobalt blue pieces that would all work great together. Since it was so hot in the afternoon, we went to a thrift store. I got a few more things there. Yep, it's a sickness!

I love your pretty plates and your red goblets. Those old bottles are wonderful too. I even like the Van Gogh prints for your DD. The stool is a great find too. It might be a sickness but it's a fun one too! lol

You got some good deals there! LOVE the red glassware and plates...they make great totems or plate flowers! And all of your little plates/saucers are so pretty! Great find on the bench....looks like a great ottoman to me.

That's $12 worth of treasures !!!! I LOVE the seat/storage piece. You can NEVER have ENOUGH storage space !!!

the little storage bench is similar to the one that came with my sewing machine over 40 years ago. It is a bit larger than my other. I'm going to give it a makeover, cuz they are handy!

Luna, it sounds like you found some wonderful pieces.

I cannot resist stopping at yard sales!
I tell myself that I don't need another thing
but I stop anyway!
I try to justify the buys, by saying that I dont drink, smoke or go to movies.....It's my only vice-LOL
Then I go look in my storage buildings--
So I hoard!!!!! Is that so bad???? Grin

My hubby would be right there beside me, but he would have woken me up to get there early. He found some real silverware at an estate auction and only paid $85.00 for a 32 piece set. One of the same pattern (42 piece) just sold on ebay for 1,450.00. I look for junk to put in the yard, lol.

Great finds. I love the ruby red collections.. Saucers are almost too pretty for mosaics.

WOW...what a haul, you really got some bargains.Yep....I think it is a sicknes....and I'm REALLY ill!! It seems like such a waste of time NOT to stop. I swear I think garage sales signs are made with super big magnets that just sucks me in.

Good Haul Kathy!! I am suffering with rye neck? and am in agony, am off work and too gimped up to even drive much so missed GS around here. Can't garden/make garden junk...arg! Poor me! lol! So thanks for shopping and showing!heh heh!

Great haul! I can see when DH pulls up the bench & says, "Honey, why haven't I ever used this foot rest before?" You'll look & say, "that old thing,been around since forever"(just at somebody else's house)LOL Jan

I would love to find some red glassware like that! So beautiful! Nice finds! I, too, can't resist stopping at sales but my sweetie is a junk-aholic too. It's an inexpensive date! =)

BTW... can I ask what does DH stand for? (thinking dear husband...? )

What a great haul!!! Those red goblets are Avon and are worth about $12 to $15 bucks a each.
Can't wait to see what you are goin to do with them.
