Need advice on Jonathan and Yellow Delicious apples, please
Comments (8)If they told you what the varieties are, I'm sure they are giving you grafted trees. The real problem might be, you probably won't be able to find out what the rootstock is, so you will have no idea how big they will get. Dwarf rootstocks will only grow to about 9-10 feet, semi-dwarf will grow anywhere from like 12-15 feet, and seedlings can grow 30 feet high. And the trees are typically just as wide at maturity as they are high -- they kind of grow in a globe shape unless they are well pruned to do something different. Also, the bigger the tree (based on the rootstock), the longer it takes to crop. Dwarf trees will begin producing apples at 2-3 years old. Seedling trees can take 8-9 years. Semi-dwarf is in between, maybe 4-5 years. I hope you are patient. Both of these apple varieties are great for eating and for cooking, also excellent for juice. Neither one keeps very long -- you'll need to use them up before winter, or sauce or juice them and freeze. Go ahead and plant them, and have fun!...See MoreWhat's the best disease resistant yellow delicious type apple?
Comments (5)I have grown Grimes Golden over the years. According to Virginia Vintage apple it is believed to be a parent of the yellow delicious. Also, since it is believed to have come out of the Blue Ridge Mountains,it may work for your zone. A Grimes still bears at my old home after over 30 years of neglect. When I was living there, my kids used to win ribbons at the county fair with this apple. I have the first fruit this year on my new Grimes. I don't ever remember having problems with disease. I never sprayed the first tree and still got great apples. I don't know what I did right, but it worked. A couple of years ago here, fire blight was a bear here and again don't recall any problem with the new Grimes....See MoreA positive view on Golden Delicious
Comments (21)Sugar-acid balance? OK, maybe off the tree, but 3 weeks in storage and the acid is gone. Important apples to me store well as they are the prominent fall, winter and early spring fruit for most of us. In my part of the country I rarely find serious apple fans that embrace Golden Delicious as a top apple. Presumably it is a better apple as grown under FN's conditions (is that outdoors?). One fan of GD I know is an 85 year old woman who can't tolerate acid- she says GD is literally the only apple she can stomach. Don't know if she's tried Fuji. For those who love GD- you are a lucky group. It is an exceptionally easy apple to grow that bears annual crops reliably. Partially I'm sure it's a matter of where it is grown, but I think it is also very much a matter of individual taste. Also traditional southern cuisine leans more heavily on sugar than northern- I wonder if this doesn't extend to apple preferences. I'm probably stretching on this theory, as Texas is southwestern and my generalization is broad enough to be just plain silly- but still?. How much sugar is in a typical Texan BBQ sauce?...See Moredelicious Chicken stew
Comments (5)That's sort of how I make Chicken Cacciatore, except for the mint and saffron, which would give it a bit more of a Greek flavor. I especially like the instruction: "Put this skillet aside, you don't need it any more". That makes it sound very authentic. Thanks for sharing! I have mint in my yard and will try it with this recipe. I'll probably serve it with rice. Lars...See More- 14 years ago
