Wisteria, Grapevines, Roses and Succulents

In reading Giggles post about Kiwi Vines I thought I would post my arbors. On the Discussion side I have posted more pics of my Succulents.

Wisteria it is fast growing and you cannot kill it but when it is flowering it is beautiful. You have to be careful because the vines entwine the wood of the arbor so my DH makes sure it grows on the top slates, otherwise it can uproot the posts. BUT this year my DH cut it all down, but like I said it won't die.

I see little ... probably thrift shop finds ... on the shelves with your succulents so I think that qualifies for the Discussions side! Your arbors and those roses are beautiful! I can see why you have a trained attack dog guarding them. he-he It's amazing how some pets just have to ham it up for the camera while my mother's last pooch wouldn't sit still for a picture for nothing. Btw, I would have never known the totem was dirty. Great pics and TFS!

Good thread. Roses are the queens of my garden, of course, but queens need courts and the courts ideally are brilliant. I do most sincerely believe that a garden of just roses is sterile and dull, no matter how wonderful the roses may be. I also have fairly frequent infatuations. I can't remember ever having actually fallen out of love with a longed-for plant, but some just don't work out for me, and I either forget them or I set them aside with a sigh and ongoing regret. Acidophile plants don't grow here. I can forego azaleas, though the deciduous fragrant kinds that are close to the species are beautiful. Camellias are harder to let go: I currently have a small one in a pot, and others may join it. I honestly regret blueberries. Rhododendrons are an example of a vast and beautiful class of plants that I can perfectly well live without--though, if I lived in a country where rhododendrons were what prospered, I would grow rhododendrons. I still have a bee in my bonnet about ginger lilies, and if I can get roots (tubers, whatever they're called) without spending a fortune, I'll try them again in pots. I have unsatisfied longings for varieties of box and of daphne: plants can be had, but they cost too much. I lust for lilacs, and intend to get them one day, but it will take time and the lilacs will be a life project. I love aromatic plants, which are reasonably priced, available, grow well for me, and are easy to propagate. I've loved lavender for years, and fortunately it loves my garden; and I've just discovered sages in all their magnificent variety. Rosemary, phlomis, artemisia, perovskia. Thyme is fussy and dies out, unfortunately because I greatly adore thyme. Each successive wave of desire settles down, and if the desired plants work for my conditions I add them to my growing harem, knowing them and loving them in all their beauty and variety. Costs are a limiting factor: I can't go into the collection of peonies in a big way, not because they're not wonderful but because they're simply expensive for my pocketbook. The other limit is time: I don't have enough of it to keep track of all my loved plants, recording names and keeping them labeled; hundreds of roses are work enough for my collector's instincts. Other passions, satisfied and not: clematis, naturally; osmanthus; irises, which are a prime flower here; evergreen shrubs in general; magnolias, which are a killer longing, as they're hard to site here, but not so hard I can renounce them with a light heart, and they're among the most meltingly beautiful of flowers. So far I've been strangely immune to daylily lust. I could very easily fall over the precipice and fall madly in love with tender cyclamen. I appreciate hellebores more every year, but they're hard to site in my garden--I may have more room for them in a few years. Anything that smells wonderful is a candidate. I wish I could find a nursery that offered a decent collection of honeysuckle. Barberries are exciting. Oh, and I forgot: Sansevierias, of which I have a modest collection: the polar opposite to roses, in terms of what they have to offer in plant beauty. I love them, and I want more, who knows why. Also I'm fond of succulents for their grand sculptural qualities, and I particularly love agaves. Melissa P.S. I know those beetles. They love fritillarias too, I'm afraid.

Andrea, I live three hours south of you and am anywhere from 5--10 degrees hotter than you are in the summer. At least in Sacto it cools off at night when you get the breeze from the river. Here it cools off to about 90 for two (yes two) seconds and starts to climb its way back up again. OK, I have much smaller rose beds than you. I live in a zero lot line planned unit development and still manage to get a bit of my rose fix in. If you like a bit of the old rose/cabbage rose look, several of the Austins will work well. I have mine against a white fence and they do just fine. In the heat of summer, they may not bloom for a bit but will pick up again and you will have blooms usually until Christmas. I would put up an arbor or something like that rather than grow straight up against your house. Brother Cadfael has very few thorns and grows upright and tall. I have a rebar arch that is probably 8 feet across and about 8 feet high. I have Peach Blossom growing on it (yes, it is thorny but it is pretty much constantly in bloom. I also have another rose from Ralph Moore that is finally just starting to come into its own. Here is Peach Blossom. It is a single to double rose and very pretty. First and last to bloom in my yard. Here is the Ralph Moore rose whose name I can't recall. ACK! It really is very pretty. It can get up to 15 feet tall and can take our heat. Sorry it is not the best picture in the world and you can tell I needed to do a bit of deadheading. Sorry, but I cannot find a picture of my Brother Cadfael rose. I would also imagine that several of the other leggy Austins you could probably grow as a climber as well. I had Heritage at one time but lived in an apartment then and only had a 9' by 9' patio so I had to get rid of it as it was HUGE!. BTW, on that patio, I had Austin's Sharifa Asma, Brother Cadfael, Ambridge Rose, Emily Rose, Jude the Obscure (gets huge too), Evelyn (gets huge as well), Peach Blossom, Mary Webb and the following minis--Sequoia, Lavendar Crystal (LOVE that rose), Sweet Chariot and two fig trees all in pots! So don't let a small space stop you from growing roses. I say go for it. What do you have to lose?

I can't believe it's been almost a year since my last update! The two surviving bushes are doing great. The bigger one, the one that was already spreading like crazy last year, is still spreading like crazy this year. The other one is more subdued, but it's doing quite well, too, and they're both blooming like crazy. There is one thing, though, that's troubled me from the first time they bloomed: their color is more on the dark pink side than purple. Oh, don't get me wrong, they're very pretty, and they're darker this year than they were last year, but they're still not PURPLE and white, they're dark pink and white. Is there perhaps something they're missing in terms of nutrients? I'm giving them Miracle-Gro Shake 'n Feed Continuous Release Rose and Bloom Plant Food...but I had forgotten to do it for, well, a few months, until today. :)

Thanks, Linda. I've liked that combo, too, so I keep them close enough to one another to enjoy it. Hot Lips is a real colonizer. I planted a one gallon at a client's house years ago and there are now five or six HUGE clumps. It gets about three feet tall, eating the bottom of a large Sally Holmes on her rear wrought iron fence. I whack Hot Lips back to the ground every fall and it eats that end of the planter by mid summer every year. Kim

Love your arbors especially the first one! I love the succulents too-- they seem to be easier for me to grow than flowers on my hot and sunny decks.

Beautiful gardens, nanagma! I am lovin' your succulent vignette! Like calamity, I the hammock idea in the grape arbor is wonderful! (instead of just between 2 trees!)

Beautiful pictures! I love arbors, and I love yours, especially the one with the seats, it looks so cute and old fashioned. I want to try and build one along those lines.

I'll bet your wisteria arbor is so beautiful when it's in bloom. We have a lot of wisteria here, but it is so vigorous, I'm not brave enough to tackle the work it would take to grow it on an arbor.

Your red rose with the black iron arbor is gorgeous. Do you know what the name of the rose is?

I love succulents too. Looks like you've got some interesting ones. Thanks for the posting the pics, it's been a pleasure to see your beautiful arbors.

garden2garden I am so sorry I don't know the name but it is a climbing one. I also have a yellow rose on iron arbor. I love arbors and my DH makes them for me. Right now he is working on another one as soon as he has it up I'll post it.
Luna on the conversation side is a better pic of my succulent which show some red cement blocks painted red to hold my succulents, does that count LOL

Edna they are still beautiful. I have to trim my wisteria back yearly after bloom but it has still crushed my corner patio post. Well, I think the succulents are fine cause you have them within this thread. If some people get too technical you would have to put them on the exact spot where others post their big time collections. And that rose is still a beautiful rose and I love it. Is the dog a different one from the one I met? June

June(Twomonths) Yes our black lab went to doggy heaven right after Christmas, she had cancer. So even though we said no more heart break, we got Champurrado(Champ) from the shelter, he is still a puppy and doing all kinds of mischief, but one good thing he does is peel off the bark from the Palm Tree so he is a true GardenJunk dog, LOL

I remember the pic of your dog on other side, he is so beautiful, such coloring, glad he is keeping it! The red rose is stunning! Love the arbors. My lop Snoopy loved grape leaves so that is what I think of every time I see them. Wisteria is beautiful is it purple or white? But I know it can really take over. Nice you have so much room & looking forward to seeing your DH's next arbor!! Sure helps shade things from the Ca. sun too. Jan

I love your arbors!! They look great but!! You can kill wisteria. I did by cutting it back to much.It was getting out of control.O well!
