Plate flower instructions

I was asked how I attached the stem to the plate in my first plate flower. Here are the instructions:

I painted a dowel green with a little streaking. I glued one end into a copper elbow and glued a very short piece of dowel(about an inch or so) in the other end of the elbow. The short piece was glued and slipped into a hole in the round piece you see glued to the plate. I don't know what that thing is called, but it was with the dowels in the store. The hole wasn't big enough for this use, so hubby reamed it out. Does this make sense?

By the way, the GE silicone worked fine on this one and some of the others, but I've had trouble with it on the plates that have ridged designs on them. I then used a high strength epoxy, with hardener, on them and it seems to be working. That's what hubby thinks I should be using anyway....What does he know!!!? I really think I'm going to invest in a glass & tile bit so I can screw the plates and bowls together.

Wow, these are really beautiful!! How long is the threaded rod you're using? Is it easy to bend or do you have to use a pipe bender? Do you use rubber washers? Is the rod 1/4 inch around? I've made bird feeders with chick feeders and have found drilling the glass is time consuming but wow, you make it look like it's the best way to make these flowers.

Welcome to the forum canuckeh! I am one of those GJers who loves the plate flowers. There are a number of posts about them and several ways to make them. If you type in glass plate flowers in the search bar at the bottom of the page, you'll get lots of posts. You can either drill the plates or glue them together with GE Silicone II for glass. I do make mine indoors and haven't been bothered by odor from the silicone. Give the search a try and if you don't find what you're looking for, I'll try and post some more instructions--or at least the way I do them!

I made a bunch of them for my junior high art students. You cut two boards, 1/4" to 1/2" thick, to size, perhaps 6x8 or similar. You cut cardboard to fit inside these and then paper to fit inside the cardboard. Hold it all together with velcro. You sew 3+ inches of the "hook" side of velcro to about 10 inches of the fuzzy side so it will hook together when you strap it around the wood. Make two such strips for your flower press. This is easier than clamps or even than drilling boards. Press your flowers between the papers backed by the cardboard. Good luck.

About the two part epoxy....I've used that as well. I was extremely disappointed with it at the end of the season. I used it for totems, and it worked great. I thought it holding up well the entire summer. When I went to put away the totems for the winter, they came apart. The epoxy made a very clean, smooth peel off...one piece from the next.
