garden trellis from mirror frame

Hi Gang!

I found this old mirror frame at my "Last Chance Goodwill" for 99 cents. Turquoise seems to be the color my eye goes for this Spring, so that's the color I painted it. I used upholstery tacks and criss-crossed wire to form the trellis. This will go in my new "Chicken Garden" next to my new coop. I'll post pics of this piece in place once the new garden is presentable! Kathy

Well, before you go through such trouble to order in these nets, perhaps you could check your local hardware store for what's available. It's possible that these are available right in your location. I kind of recall seeing these things in the bamboo section of Home Depot but then I wasn't paying that much attention. An alternative is to use large wire fencing materials which you could nail down to a frame. Also, another consideration is the use of bamboo sticks lashed together to form grids. I've used these before for my beans and found them very handy. As for pumpkins, I've seen a technique also using bamboos to form an upside down teepee. The sticks project out from a narrow point in the ground. It's held together firmly with cross wires or flexible bamboo lashing. The advantage to this technique is to offer you more room to grow other plants while your vine is growing up the poles. If you know some friends who all replace netting often, try going in together on a roll of concrete reinforcing mesh, or see if a home supply store will sell it to you by the foot. 1. It will last just about forever. (One piece I have outlasted the first set of wood poles I had it attached to and is still going strong.) 2. Nothing short of a tree landing on it will warp it once secured on the ends. 3. The 6" squares in the mesh make it very convenient to mark off planting areas and allow easy reach-through for weaving and harvesting. 4. It generally does not need a top support when run across a 4' bed. If trellising melons, I do weave through a stick or length of re-bar to stiffen it some 5. Can easily be tied to simple T-posts on either end, or stapled to wood posts. 6. Natural red-brown color (rust) blends readily into a garden setting 7. The 5' width is a good height lengthwise across a bed, or leaves 6" on either edge if building a taller trellis over a 4' wide bed.

Lake Ontario has a nasty habit of sending off some really hard winds. Perhaps instead of trying to fight the winds could you change the location of your peas and pole beans to someplace that is better sheltered? If not you are going to have to really anchor anything you put into the ground pretty good so those winds don't turn it into a weapon of destruction. My DD went to school up in Oswego so I know how strong those winds can be. They can rip doors off of buildings! I'd be concerned that even if you do get something into the ground that will stay that the wind would burn the leaves or damage the crop so bad your efforts would be in vain. Could you maybe grow them along the side of the house Potage style?

It would be interesting to do an environmental impact assessment on jute or sisal. It goes beyond biodegradability. There is packaging, which is usually plastic, manufacturing, which includes retting and carding, and transportation to the store. Every time you replace it, you're using more of those things. The mass of unbiodegradable nylon in a net is vastly less than the amount of unbiodegradable vinyl or rubber in a hose, and yet the lifetimes are similar. We should be using wooden buckets instead of hoses! I'm very environmentally conscious, but feel strongly that such conciousness has to involve realistic assessments. Oh, and I live in a (mostly, but not entirely) biodegradable house and I am, personally, (mostly, but not entirely) biodegradable.

Novice- the base color is some deep turquoise that I had left over from another project. ( I don't remember the brand- but it was designed for a kids room, so it could be washed with soap and water.) Then I went over that with some watered down "sweet chocolate" acrylic paint, and wiped some of that off the raised areas, but- that turned out too dark, so I put a bit of water in the nearly empty turquoise paint can, and made a "wash" that I painted over the entire thing. I put clear sealer over the whole thing, since the paint is interior paint. It will be interesting to see how this piece weathers. It still has it's original dark stain under the paint, so even if it gets peely or chippy, it should look kind of cool. Kathy

Like the new use for mirror frame & great color,can't wait to see what you have growing up it. Will help keep chickens cool too, be sure whatever you plant on it is not poisonous to chickens.(castor beans come to mind) Jan
