plant swap, what about Europe?

I find it annoying that the Exchanges section is only available to those in the US! What about us guys outside of US with plants to swap?

It's cost prohibitive (when legal) to send plants (or any package) across country lines. I'm sure that's the reason the exchange is limited to US, along with the amount of time plants would spend in a box. Probably not worth it for that reason even if there wasn't a legal hurdle to cross.

I bet a UK swap would be a big hit since there are a lot of forum readers from there. Nothing stopping you from getting it going. I've arranged/hosted a couple, would be happy to give you some tips.

Well it wouldn't cost that much to send as it would from america to england. Mind you I have received plants from Turkey and even Australia!
By the way, does anyone know of a lady from Turkey on here? Shes who I got my big Aloe from way back when...

Okie dokie...I have Susan and Nelson for white rain lilies so far :) Another ? ...We planted a fall/winter veggie garden and some of the veggies are coming up really good and we're gonna need to move some of the ones that are growing to pots because of spacing...I am very willing to share these veggies...here is what I can share if any are interested... Spinach-Mustard Tendergreen (4) Jersey Cabbage (2) Curled Leaf Mustard (4) Purple Top Turnips (4) Mustard (4) with the rain we've been having they've been growing faster than i thought they would...they went from itty bitty sprouts to decent sized starts overnight it seems...if we get more rain I may be able to share more... I know it may be weird to offer veggies/produce plants lol...I just wanted to offer since I have them :)

I think the idea of a SE MA swap is great, too and I appreciate how far our SE friends have been traveling. I hope, however, that we continue to have two swaps- Sp and F- and that one will be "up here" around Boston, AND that our Cape area friends will come this way, despite the drive! Can you see I'm feeling a bit anxious about the group (as fluid as it is) hanging in together? Rationally, my anxiety makes little sense because the reason people come or don't are so varied but even so, sometimes thinking about change is difficult. But I'll be there, no matter what, if I can get there!

Hey all! I am back from computer hell - was without a connection for almost a week. I am so sorry I disappeared on you all! Maryanne, I had over 200 emails, but I do not recall seeing one from you. I would have responded! if you sent it through GW, I wonder if it got trapped by a spam blocker. Sorry! THe plant swap never materialized. I tried to get one of the local garden clubs to participate and they were not interested. What is up with that? A garden club that doesn;t want to participate in plant swaps? Harumph! Anyway, now that we all got some much needed rain, I am open to the idea of rescheduling. If it is just going to be a few people, we could meet at my house rather than the park. Hey PK -- I already have an octopus agave. A squid agave should feel right at home. Come to think of it the pink and grey color and markings are kinda' like a squid. Well Kathy, (giggle) figured you would not be a great fan of this plant being the softy cottage gardener you are, but somebody's gotta' love 'um! (At least when my dear friend Kathy was over here she conceded that the blue pot was not as ugly in person and she thought it was in the picture I posted on the gallery. Thank you Kathy ... greenlarry - there is a UK GW forum but it's pretty dead. I just Googled 'UK plant swap' and got a lot of hits. There's one at the link just as an example. I know nothing about it so can't say if it's any good.

GW is basically a US outfit so I'm not surprised there's isn't a UK exchange. The red tape and cost involved in shipping across international boundaries makes it difficult. But these things are not just there to annoy us. There is a history of disasters caused by shipping plant material between countries. Dutch Elm disease? Lily Beetle? Sudden oak death? Ash die back? And on and on. All caused by infected plant material being imported.

When I flew into Boston they confiscated an apple I was intending to eat on the airport bus. Too dangerous!
