Hanger/Bird feeder project done ! 4 pics

4 Hangers , alittle raffia , a Goodwill plate ... and a few natural do-dads ( Compliments of Kirk ! - I don't have a clue what they are - but they are soooooooocool ! ) and Tah - Dah ! The "hanger project" is finished ! The only drawback I See is finding a place to hang it where the rain won't get in the dish and wash the seeds away ...

Now the true test of any bird feeder. Will the birds eat? Let us know how that works. It is adorable.

I've been busy with the GBBC and seeing birds I've never seen before (not in my yard). I visited the local marsh which is in a nature preserve and I saw that at least in the eyes of the water birds spring is coming. A Mallard drake was busy preening himself when a female Mallard swam by him at very close quarters. I swear she winked at him. I also saw a pair of Hooded Mergansers (new to me) that looked as if they were dressed up for a Mardi Gras parade. The photo wasn't exposed correctly as I was frantically trying to catch them before they swam out of sight. I hope these photos load OK - I'm having computer issues with dial-up internet access. My accelerator which used to increase the speed from pitiful to mediocre is defunct, so I'm back to pitiful and I can't really preview photos. I'm holding out for Verizon high speed which is supposed to be available soon, but they don't seem able to find my street. I just noticed that the copper birdbath is completely thawed out! April 3 is the end (of counting, anyway - the feeders stay up for me). sooey: I always have low numbers of chickadees and titmice; It's rare for me to see three at a time. They're in the woods here, so I don't know if I have 50 birds coming single-file or whether most of them don't bother with the feeders. They almost always swoop in to grab a bite and then eat it in a nearby tree. Sometimes I can tell if there's two by the direction they come in (one from the left, one from the right, one from the left, one from the right....) It's interesting also that all three of us have roughly equal numbers of Pine Siskins and American Goldfinches. During the big siskin invasion the goldfinch numbers went way down, as if they had left the premises. Now that there are fewer siskins the goldfinches have come back. The first few times I got equal numbers I worried that I was miscounting the birds and I obsessed over counting with field glasses and photographing them, but I finally decided the numbers were correct. Maybe this is some sort of a natural balance of what each species will tolerate nearby? and/or the capacity of the sock feeders? There are mixed flocks at the socks, but usually the goldfinches come first and then the siskins later. On another note, I'm wondering about the capitalization of bird names issue. I have no problem with capitalizing American Goldfinches and Pine Siskins as definitive names, but I would prefer to just say goldfinches and siskins as generic terms. Besides, it's a pain to capitalize and type out the full name when there's no confusion as to what I'm talking about. What do you guys think? OK, I'll wait a few weeks until PFW is over and I have something to post, and then I'll start a new summer thread. That's my favorite cart. My father had the bigger one for many years and now my brother is using it. I loved the big one, but it's a little hard to maneuver so I bought the middle size a few years ago (many different suppliers sell these or similar carts). The mid-size one has a removable gate and spent the winter on my porch under the overhang next to a plastic toboggan. If there was no snow cover I'd roll the cart down the steps and use it to carry big bags of birdseed from the car. In case of snow, the plastic toboggan got delivery duty. The cart is out basking in the sun today. The toboggan is getting dusty. Claire

Ahhh, toomuch, you must have some "fancy" birds around WISC! Think you should call this a "May Day bird feeder!" Reminds me of old, old pics where the girls danced around the maypole.

Whoa, when I saw the pic on the glass table I thought it made a wonderful centerpc! But then I could imagine all the bird doo-doo on the glass table! :-O LOL! ....so I hope your birds dance around the Maypole! Jeanne S.

I LOVE this!!! Extremely creative! Turned out BEAUTIFUL!! I've saved all the pics in my To-Do folder. Wonderful!

But how to you get the plate to balance so well on the hangers? Are the plate and hangers somehow glued together? Or is the weight of the plate sufficient to keep it steady?

The weight of the plate keeps it pretty steady - but just to be sure - I used a couple pieces of white duct tape on the bottom . ( I taped the hangers to the plate in a few spots. ) It's still pretty bendy , so the idea might need improving on . As for step by step - it was just bending hangers , taping them together w/duct tape and winding raffia around them !

Very good job on "hanging" things. It is really pretty all deck out for the birdies.
I can picture a christmas tree using your folded hangers. Maybe fold them a little tighter so you could have more branches? Spray paint green & put a string of white lights inside?

My pics are gone. I got mad because the squirrels destroyed the feeder . ggggrrrr .... it was a failure.
Maybe I'll try something with hangers again .

Beware --- it's a disaster waiting to happen. It lasted 3 days . I have Ninja Squirrels .... they destroy everything.
