g'day gardener, yes hey can be used, i also used to advocate using certified potato's to grow from it makes no difference to cropping you either do well or not, but it is supposed to ensure no disease. i plant both certified and whatever sprouts in the pantry from shop bought potato's i do just as well crop wise with both, there are a lot of gardeners out there who plant shop bought material and to date i can't recall any plant health issues because of that. len Here is a link that might be useful: lens garden page

Bobby, it is just short of amazing, that you've not seen a green potato before now. It's often hard to find any that DON'T have green, here. "But potatoes belong to the nightshade family, Solanaceae, as are tomatoes, petunias, eggplant, nicotine, sweet and hot peppers, datura, and the alkaloids in them can range from mildly to extremely toxic." Yes, and different people have different levels of sensitivity to them. I find that eating tomatoes, potatoes, eggplant, & peppers really intensifies Arthritis pain. And if I eat a potato that has green on it, it is even worse. Like some others here, I definitely do NOT eat potato chips that are green, or partially green. And I cut green off of potatoes when cooking, too. In fact, I eat very little of any of the Nightshade family. For the most part, it just isn't worth it! Yet I know of others who aren't bothered by them at all. Go figure. Rusty

You could but how successful they would be all depends on the amount of damage done to them. Plus storing them that long might be a problem. Cool, dry storage is required and they may continue to rot anyway. In your climate I'd be tempted to replant them now and hope for some crop from then this year. Dave
