Planted these two Quaken Aspen Trees in December of 2018. The two photos below were taken in May of 2020. I live in Hacienda Heights, 91745, Southern California, Zone 10. Quaken Aspen are recommended to be grown in Zones 2 thru 6. Searching around the internet, someone claimed that he/she was successful in planting Aspen trees in Yucaipa, CA. This person recommended planting the trees in winter. So I thought to try my luck, after taking a road trip to Aspendale, CA (https://goo.gl/maps/1vJnCEjDtRA9KJsy5). After planting the two Aspen trees, I immediately started watering with Vitamin B-1 Liquid Fertilizer (https://www.homedepot.com/p/Western-States-1-Gal-Vitamin-B-1-Liquid-Fertilizer-100047058/100607914), ...as the description claims that it "promotes root growth". I needed every advantage that I can get. I continued using the B-1 liquid fertilizer for the first 6 months or so, per the direction of the label. Ended up going through two (1 Gal.) bottles worth. After the two bottles of B-1, I would save eggshells and use it as fertilizer. Read somewhere that eggs shell contain nitrogen and is great as compost, since it bio-grades relatively slowly. These are a couple of tips/pointers that I would associate with my two Aspen trees taking root in my backyard. I hope these two Aspen trees continues to thrive. Still am very nervous about the summer heat waves in Southern California. The summer heat killed off (wilted) most of the foliage during 2019, but I continued to water them daily, in hopes of keeping the trees alive. I was so relieved that the two trees took root and stayed alive, being that they were $65 each when i bought them, (https://www.naturehills.com/). I am so glad that I did not waste my money in an attempt to grow these trees outside of their recommended zones. Started back in April of this year (2020), I have made an attempt to water the two Aspen trees twice a day, once in the morning and once at dusk, and it seemed to have helped promote more foliage this year, in comparison to Mid-May of last year (2019), where I would only water once at dusk. I will continue with the "twice-a-day" through summer and see where it leads me. I am hoping that watering the trees twice a day and will aid the foliage in surviving the summer heat in SoCal. Hopefully, I can report back, Fall 2020, with some updated photos of YELLOW foliage! Wish me luck.

Longan seems to be more hardy than lychee; it grows better than lychee in drier conditions, is a little bit more cold tolerant, and is more reliably productive at producing fruit. That's probably why longan can be found in the markets at all different times of the year in China, while lychee tends to be more seasonal. For a young plant, make sure you are keeping the soil moist, and if you live in a drier climate, wind can dry out the young leaves, so some people advise wind protection. In hot dry climates, shade tarp may be a good idea to give young plants a good start. The lychee varieties 'Mauritius' and 'Emperor' are slightly more drought tolerant and less water-needy than the other varieties, but I don't think it's a big difference.

Wild: I grow tulips with my garlic, planting them at the same time, with tulips between the garlic varieties just planted quite a bit deeper. I also dig my tulips every year and they bloom every year, too; they do mature quite a bit earlier than the garlics do. I have to leave enough space so that digging the tulips does not impact the still active garlic. I dig the tulips at the beginning of yellow so I get the whole stem, which is easily a month and more ahead of digging the garlic, but they cure very much the same, on the same screens in fact. I keep my own tulip bulbs to plant back just like I keep my own garlic seed, in fact Istore the cured bulbs together more or less in the same place under the same conditions. So the comparison is not very far off, even though we are in significantly different climate zones. I have been more or less following Grey Duck for a couple of years, although I have not had the need to buy from them. I hope they return to business, but small family operations often reach some sort of impass and simply disappear. That happened to one in Wisconsin in the past couple of years too. There are also Whistling Duck, Red Gate, and of course Filaree as well as a very large number of other pretty well reputed online growers, most of whom are able to provide generally good cultural advise. Then there are the local county extension services available in most of the country, at least here in the Midwest they are and quite a few state agricultural publications from all over the country. You can probably tell from this forum there are several ways to grow garlic. Several successful techniques is true for most things human. The issue is to find the one that works best for you. One quick thought that you might be able to protect your favorites from wildlife by growing inside chicken wire or hardware cloth cages. I have had to do that here to protect my tomatoes from the local tree squirrels.
