Looks like the back of a great garden bench to me.
I took mine apart and used the spindles to make a quilt hanger.

The side rails, could be place sideways or hung sideways and used to hang, tea towels, or vintage table cloths or any type of flat collectable. Great Find.

Now just hold on Aliska cause I did see some place where they had made a beautiful bench out of a baby crib. Let me doing some checking around in my saved sites and I'll get back to you with a pic and the site name.

I like that bench idea, also like robolady's use of the spindles; hers are nicer quality than these.

I have some extra climbers I don't know what to do with so may try to make a low trellis for them, but I would really like to see that bench.

I have one for my backyard, but if it looks nice, I could use one in front.

OMG, they are beautiful, every single friggin' piece. She sure has a flair for design, and her prices are so reasonable. Granted she probably got them super cheap or for nothing, but it looks like she put a lot of work and thought into each design.

The only thing is this crib I found is cheaply made. It is something you would want to hide except for the ends with the spindles maybe. The transformed pieces on that page are made from solid wood, quality stuff to start with.

I was coming home from the grocery store and noticing how people make little fences for accents in their yards. Why do I do this lol? One had two short pieces of fence joined at right angles and set in a fairly large, stone planter bed. Some people down the street have something similar only stand alone decorated and plants in front of it.

You could use the rails to hang pots from. Just paint it up, and then shabby it up. or paint it black and it might look like iron.

craftylady, yes, they are all gorgeous. I love junk that doesn't look like junk when you are done with it.

robolady, I don't understand how I would set it up to hang pots, but that is an interesting idea although I don't need much more in pots to water lol. Only it's getting not to be funny - or fun any more and we're just getting going for the season, supposed to rain, delay delay delay, now no rain for several days, weather forecasts on our local media are useless.

You bring up an interesting point. How would I get paint to stick to it if I want it black like iron? I don't want to hand sand it, don't know if liquid sandpaper would work, that is tedious, too.

Also, you seem to have a knack for things and this thread I started got talked to death (called something like how would I anchor this hatrack), but I found this a week or so ago. I really want to paint it black and NOT look chippy (I like that look on some things), but it is some kind of cheap metal with a brass coating.

Is there some easy way to prime it to get flat or semi-gloss black paint to stick without chipping? I want it to look like iron. Does rustoleum make anything that would work as a primer? It is not worth sandblasting, also has plastic parts. I don't know how easy it would be to paint plastic.

I got a lot of good advice on that thread, but we didn't get into the specifics of painting.

Oh, those big clay pots are planted up (I scoured them out and rinsed in bleach water) and sitting in front of my stoops. They look kind of nice there.

I think I'll soak that rectangular one overnight in bleach. I really like that but don't know what to put in it. It's quite heavy, even when empty.

I used a curb shopped Jenny Lind crib to make a screen for my heat pump. I just shortened the side piece and cut the legs off the ends pieces. Screw it together to make a three sided screen and Voila! No more ugly heat pump in your face!

Don't hold your breath on the pics. I'm finally just about done with my stepladder trellis I started last season when I saw what people were doing with them. I was stuck on the stakes, to make drilling easier, I am using heavy gauge brass eye hooks (all they had that wouldn't rust) and will wire them together, not as professional as screws but may work better in the long run. Maybe not as I realized the eye hooks on the feet of the ladder and eye hooks on the heavy wooden stakes may not line up because the ladder may sink into the ground a bit, and I don't know how much to allow for that, so I thought I'd put it up first then do that last chore on it. I'm a novice when it comes to working with tools, klutzy, but I can do a few things.

If I come up with anything worth looking at, I will. I doubt it will be anything as pretty as what was at that one link, that stuff still blows me away.

I did take out a screw to see what the composition is (pressed wood is nasty to work with and doesn't hold up worth a darn with screws, etc), and it looks like it MIGHT be real wood, still I kind of doubt it. At least I see I can probably saw through it if I need to.

I've got too many projects going now. Winter is better for those. Over on the ogr forum, people have been helping me with a trellis, now I've changed the design and am trying to find someone to do it for me without costing an arm and a leg. I'll do the others myself to make up for it.

As a pot rack, i meant for the kitchen to hang pots & pans. Sorry I should have been more clear.
On painting plastic, they have a new spray paint specifically for painting on plastic. Check your local home store.

On painting the brass thing. Scuff it up with sandpaper, spray with gray primer, then spray with the color you want. I'd not keep it in the weather though.

Aliska, you are certainly finding some neat things. Most people swear by Kilz or Zinzer primer. You don't have to do a lot of sanding, and the primer gives a good base for your paint. If you don't want to change the color of your crib, you could even just slap on a good coat of Valspar Marine varnish everywhere on the crib to protect it a little longer. Since you got it for free, even if it only lasts a couple years--that is okay.

Robolady just explained how to do your brass rack. I still think you should use it upside down--that way no one will know what it's original purpose was, and a pot should fit nicely in the top and vines could grow up from below. Easy to drive into the ground and could even easily attach a tie down with some wire and a couple of stakes if you wanted it extra secure. Might be a good idea since it is tall.

Both of these projects could be quick projects so you can enjoy them this year in your yard.

As for your ladder, maybe you could just drive a stake into the ground next to the leg and just put a couple of screws through the stake and into the leg. If you make your projects too complicated, it is too easy to get discouraged and give up on it.

Maybe some of these other ladies can give you ideas of how they have done similar projects.

Uh, my kitchen. I don't think so :-(. You have no idea what I have there. The cupboards fell off, I wasn't well, and couldn't stand the thought of even dealing with the ins co, screwed myself out of more, let alone having it all torn up. I'm going to have to face it sometime. I have shower stall boards duct taped to the wall so the cold air doesn't get in so bad. I wish I could move to an apartment for a couple months and get it done, but that costs more money, too. I've been down that road and cannot stand to have the house torn up and pounding, people coming and going, actually ended up in the emergency room over it several years back.

Now a whole wall needs to be redone because the studs are rotten from a roof leak for years I didn't know I had until water started dripping down the wall, that means the countertop has to come off, the sink, garbage disposal, bottom cupboards, ugh! That's why I'm escaping by making the outside better first. If I had a "normal" kitchen, that would be a really cool idea. My kitchen is cute if it were fixed back up.

Thanks for the suggestions on the primers. I took everybody's suggestion and am definitely using it upside down. I simply do not have time to do all that with all the other work. I have the rose planted that may climb on it if it does ok, but I can't risk putting the rose on that hot brass finish.

The stakes for the ladder are so thick, got them for 10 cents apiece, treated, painted, and the way the ladder legs splay out, drilling and putting in two screws which I was going to do originally just was too much to make sure the stakes were on straight. They could be crooked, but what I do do, it has to be as right as I can get it.

Let's see, I have the baby crib, the trellis I have to pay somebody to do, my iron plant stand is still in the shop to be welded, better check on that, and that rack. If I can take my time, I can do it, but I'm really feeling the pressure.

Habitat Restore just called to say they have a bunch of register covers in, my friend wants me to come see her roses, my other friend wants me to run an ad for her, I made a huge cherry pie I didn't want to do but didn't want the cherries to go bad once I had thawed them out. And I wanted to do a lot with my plants today . . .I'm feeling really stressed.

I wish I could be like other people and go, go, go, but I pay a price for it and have to slow down.

Sorry. I just feel like everything is closing in on me. It will pass. That's how I cope. Pretend it's not there until I find the strength to deal with it.

Several years back on this site, one very talented and crafty junker took a crib like that apart, took all the spindles out, painted each section a different color, and then made a free standing fence out of them.

Now that is a neat idea! I'd love to see something like that. I'd be afraid I'd break a spindle trying to get it out, still can't get the rest of the laminated top off a pretty old table I wanted to paint shabby chic. I am thinking of making a corner fence out of it, partial fence, for two of my roses.

I need to go to junkers anonymous meetings. Go to Habitat Restore and the register covers were almost exactly like my original ones which I like, excellent condition, but they were all the wrong size. That was nice of them to call me even so.

Soooooo, I'm going back tomorrow to see if a nice solid wood door can be cut down to fit my front door, I hope it will work because I'm tired of the one on there now, and then I got a bathtub full of those six-pack, 9-pack planting thingies for free, and I'd been chatting with a man earlier about what we were looking for and said something will just have to jump into my cart.

This jumped in. $5. I love homemade, primitives. There was a pretty magazine rack with caned sides for $5, too. Can't have everything.
