Comments (34)Might be a plan, Fruitnut. I'll check around. Maybe my local nursery can order a bundle if I can sell them on a variety. They may know some farmer's market growers who might like to trial a variety. Last year they got a "stray" in a bundle of Pluots and I bought it after it leafed out and it became obvious that it was bundled with a different variety. Still had the rootstock tag. Think it's Splash, but we'll see. To me, that's gambling. Now that we're all lusting after Flavor Treat thanks to Fruitnut, I noticed that Dave Wilson has a picture of Flavor Treat at their site, but it's not in their list of either commercial or home varieties. Strange. And Patty, now is the time when you start planting in the yards of friends and neighbors. I'm considering that with a couple of plums from which I want budwood. They should pollenize my trees from across the street, too. I bought a Flavor Grenade for one friend this year, and hope to get another friend a Flavor King. You have to assess how "into" gardening they are and pick easy or more challenging varieties depending on their expected level of care. And maybe drop by for dormant spraying and painting trunks every year. I think this is also a good idea with vegetable and melon seeds. Give a gardener you know seeds of premium varieties in return for a little produce, or buy seed for a local nursery to grow out, with an agreement that they'll call you when plants are ready....See MoreAdditional Stone Fruit Suggestions?
Comments (18)Thanks mrclint and rasputinj. I ended up getting a Flavor Finale Pluot, an Arctic Star and a multi-grafted peach (my only multi-graft) with Mid-Pride, Flordaprince, Eva's Pride and Desert Gold. So, I think I've just about every good peach save Babcock! Pretty excited and so far, everything is doing very well down in my area. I've got some Immunox just in case we have more fungal issues, but so far, our weather has been cooperating. The little bit of PLC I had on the trees is in check, and very minimal. I'm going to keep note on which trees had PLC and see if they continue to be the more susceptible ones. Now to read up on continuing care for stone fruits. This is my first time with stone fruits since I've always considered them "high maintainance" fruit trees. So, hopefully I can get a simple care plan put together so they continue to do well for me. Thanks for all the great suggestions, I think I'll have quite the little orchard going. As soon as this part of the yard is done, I'll post some pictures so you can see the "walk & pick" section, along with the rest of the area. It is just since a cool, secret place you can't really see from any part of our yard. You wouldn't even know it was there unless you happened to notice the pathway hidden behind our pool. Comments (9)I found Tom's revised list to be smack spot on for what produces best in my backyard in Burbank, CA. I have 17 of his 21 which I accumulated by trial and error before he revised his list. I was so pleasantly surprised that his list so closely matched what I have now growing after years of vetting. Snow Queen nectarine is absolutely wonderful. Sweet, juicy, amazing flavor. It's been around many years and is considered a tried and true old-timer. That's why there's no patent. It has proven itself over the decades in So. Calif. and probably elsewhere. I haven't tried Arctic Star nectarine because I think it is right on the borderline of getting enough chill in my area. But the ultimate proof of the pudding is in the actual growing of it and seeing how it does in one's own area. I am currently more than full up. When and if new space becomes available, I'll try Arctic Star nectarine. Spice-Zee nectaplum is also wonderful for me. Grows like gangbusters, sets fruit which are wonderful - sweet & juicy. Fabulous white nectarine flavor predominates. Beautiful color foliage very nice to look at as well. Splash pluot fruit was too small for me. Although it grew well and set fruit like grapes. I took mine out. Emerald Drop fruit was also too small for me. It did not grow as vigorously as Splash and it did not set fruit as prolifically as Splash did. I took mine out....See MoreMy Walk & Pick Orchard - new Photos
Comments (4)Thanks, Misterbaby :-) I was amazing how much growth I've had just in the last 3 to 4 weeks. I'm going to have to make some pruning decisions, again. And, hopefully the trees right up against the Morning Glories will get caught up next season. Once they're above the fence, they'll be fine. Hate to take out the Morning Glories since they do provide some screening from the dying orchard behind us. Patty S....See Morefranktank232
